VPG-DVD-123 - NEPAL At the foot of the huge peaks of the Himalayas is Pokhara and it is from here that we begin our journey through Nepal. At one time this high valley contained seven fresh water lakes named Pokhari and they gave this holiday paradise its present day name. In the past, Pokhara was an important trading link between India and Tibet but the trading of salt and wool came to an end after Tibet closed its doors to the outside world. Its population is extremely tolerant and both the Buddhist and Hindu faiths coexist side by side. A safari by elephant is a real adventure as the mahuts skilfully lead the ambling giants through the bush. Travelling through the jungle on the back of an elephant offers good protection from rhinoceroses and other predators. Kathmandu is a melting pot of both race and religion, a metropolis in the heart of the Kingdom of Nepal. In the centre of the city is the ancient palace of Hanuman Dhoka. More than seven hundred thousand people live in the metropolis of Earth's most ancient kingdom. It was only a few decades ago that ancient Nepal opened up its borders. Until then, due to the command of the ruling Gurkha Dynasty, the 'Home of the Divine' was totally isolated. Patan is Nepal's second largest city and has retained much of its original character due to its three hundred monasteries and temples. It is also one of the oldest settlements in Kathmandu Valley and during the 15th century was the capital of one of three kingdoms. Two huge lions guard the entrance of the former royal palace that originated from a monastery complex. Bhaktapur is the third ancient regal city of the thirty kilometre long Kathmandu Valley that has always been a prosperous trading route between China, Tibet and India. Our journey through this fairytale land ends at the foot of the mighty Himalayas amidst a wonderful world in which the gods are still very much alive!

RIH-DVD-SOUTH - South Africa AdventuresWe explored Cape Town before heading to our one week photo safari at the Zulu Nyala Game Lodge. City tours included the major tourist attractions including the Castle of Good Hope, the District 6 Museum, and the Langa Township. There we drank beer at a sheeban, were offered cures from a medicine man and sang at a daycare with preschoolers.We flew to Durban and rented a car for the journey to the Zulu Nyala Game lodge where the movie "I Dream of Africa" was filmed.

OTT-DVD-144 - Selous is Africa's oldest and largest game reserve and is the habitat of many rare animals. It also contains more than four hundred bird species and some fascinating flora. There is no precise timetable for the train that will arrive from Zambia, it could arrive at virtually any moment and the train stops at the Selous Game Reserve twice a week. Most of the railroad is made up of a single track and only a few stations have sidings that permit the railroads' freight trains to make way for the Mukuba Express. Despite the railroad and its safari travellers, Selous has retained its original and unspoiled splendour right up to the present day. Over the years many of the old train stations have been abandoned and now look like sad relics of a bygone age. The historic origins of this extraordinary railroad date back to German colonial times at the beginning of the twentieth century. What was once known as The Middle Land Railroad was one of the most technically challenging and expensive projects of East Africa's German colonists. Today the one thousand two hundred and fifty four kilometre railroad is an important reminder of those bygone days. In the late afternoon the train reaches its final destination of Dar-Es-Salaam and this unforgettable and captivating train journey comes to an end.

OTT-DVD-124 - The Kalahari is a unique habitat in Southern Africa, a world full of austere beauty and fascinating inhabitants. Only a few marks in the sand indicate the presence of Man. The Kalahari is often mistakenly described as a desert as in this region in the heart of Botswana it is more like an arid savannah and most visitors are surprised by the exceptionally large bio diversity of the local flora and fauna. On the border of the Central Kalahari Wild Reserve is the luxurious Deception Valley Lodge with first class accommodation and even a swimming pool. It is not only an ideal starting point for various safaris, it is also an ideal place in which to relax after an exhausting tour of the surrounding wilderness. Suddenly, two men appear. They are Bushmen, one of the most legendary ethnic groups in Africa. The Kalahari Bushmen have for more than twenty five thousand years lived in harmony with nature in this semi-desert that is also a hostile environment. However, they have managed to survive without disrupting the ecology of their surroundings. Within the branches of a tree our two guides discover the remains of a dead creature that a lion has left in order that it can retrieve it later in the day. As the tree is surrounded by bones it appears that the lion appears to favour this particular location. We continue our walkabout through the dry savannah while the two bushmen provide us with a very welcome sense of security. Despite its desert-like appearance, the Kalahari contains around two hundred and fifty edible plants. The gathering of plants is one of the main duties of the women while hunting has always been a male domain. Only here in this relatively small area of the Kalahari is there still a home for the legendary Bushmen. Desperate, but far from defeated, they attempt to preserve their cultural heritage for future generations to come.

Narrow alleys lead through the Goldsuk, the traditional covered bazaar, in which shops and stalls are packed closely together, with merchandise worth millions glittering in tempting shop windows. But for those who wish to experience something a little different, the sand dunes of the desert are the perfect setting for Dune Riding, an exhilarating extreme sport that's off the normal tourist trail. Setting off in convoy in four-wheel drive vehicles, at first the track is smooth, though undulating and, to get into the mood, this initial terrain is usually tackled with caution. And then it begins: as though on a continuous roller coaster set on sand, the horizon moves constantly as the ride follows deep ruts and then, at high acceleration, ascends high dunes, only to return downwards at stomach-churning speed. Then, in the mountains, the Wadi Water Drive follows craggy riverbeds and bumpy gravel tracks followed by further thrills in the fascinating Hajar Mountains. After all this, a camel ride turns the frenzied ridiculous into tranquil sublime and a Bedouin barbecue rounds off a perfect day in an ancient land that offers more than just a holiday!

During Europe's winter months many of the world's 830 bird species migrate to South Africa and it's not unusual to come across a meadow that contains hundreds of eye-catching storks and anything from a pygmy shrew that weighs only a few ounces to the elephant that weighs several tons. 20,000 varieties of plants, about 10% of all the plants in the world, grow in South Africa and of these, 8000 are to be found in the Cape region. Tsitsikamma is the country's first National Marine Park, its 65,000 hectares including an 80-kilometre coastline. With 24,000 varieties of flowering plants, South Africa breaks all records. Many kinds of Cape flora have found their way to Europe, such as the geranium, lily and gladioli. The park contains an abundance of cacti of all shapes and sizes and an amazing 600 varieties of heather. Following the coastline is the narrow footpath of the Waterfall Trail, an impressive route that leaves an indelible impression. This section of the Cape region is considered to be one of the world's most beautiful coastlines. For some time, Tolkien lived in Knysna and while visiting this region was inspired to write his world famous novel, The Lord of the Rings. The ancient forests captivate far less poetically ambitious people than Tolkien as each visitor becomes totally immersed in this green fairytale world and soon nurtures a special respect for it. And, who knows, if one looks very closely, perhaps a goblin or a fairy will appear from behind a fern! Well laid-out, easy to cover, and yet unique. The Tsitsikamma National Park provides its visitors with a remarkable blend of tranquillity and adventure.

NPM-DVD-149 - The Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania is a nature reserve of the superlative and as well as being both the oldest and largest game reserve in Africa it is a world of natural beauty and exotic wildlife. Much of Selous is crossed by the Rufuji River and its tributaries and although the region has a relatively small amount of rainfall each year the Rufuji contains more water than most other rivers in East Africa. Prior to the establishment of the game reserve this area was a paradise for hunters and poachers as is evident by the many hunting trophies that are on show in the Mbega Camp. Specially equipped four wheel drive vehicles are used for travelling across the savannah. Almost all of the Selous Game Reserve's camps offer various tours. However, despite its size and beautiful landscape, compared to many other African nature parks Selous is little known on the tourist trail. For those on safari the river provides many opportunities to observe all kinds of animals as all of the reservation's wildlife depend on water for survival and sometimes the river banks are like a veritable Noah's Ark. Around forty thousand hippopotamuses populate the waters of the Selous Game Reserve that is also a habitat for much bird life. More than four hundred varieties have been counted including some rare species that are almost close to extinction. The Selous Game Reserve is rightly referred to as "a nature reserve of the superlative." It is a world full of natural beauty whose spectacular originality has managed to survive right up to the present day.

Covering a total area of more than fifteen thousand square kilometres the Okawango River is the largest inland delta in the world. It flows from the Bihé Highlands in Angola and travels down to the less elevated regions of the Kalahari Desert until it finally divides into a variety of creeks. The delta's relatively few visitors mean that the landscape is well protected and it also means that those who do come here can enjoy the scenery undisturbed. Rann's Camp has a first class range of facilities but such service comes at a price and it costs several hundred dollars per person per night, but to calm the shock one can enjoy a relaxing bathe in the camp's cool swimming pool. Wildlife abounds on the innumerable islands of the Okavango Delta that, with their lush vegetation, are a true paradise for many kinds of herbivore. Today the islands of the delta are not frequented by poachers because the terrain is far too difficult and inaccessible for them. Thus in these parts, the elephant, the largest mammal in Africa, is in no danger of being shot for its ivory tusks. Most of the Delta's giraffes live on the seventy-five kilometre long and twenty-five kilometre wide, Chief's Island. In addition to its lush vegetation and diverse natural habitats, the lagoons, swamps and forests of the Delta make it one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. The Okavango Delta is one of the last great wildernesses in Africa and is something altogether special. The scenery is so beautiful that it often resembles a wonderful painting, than mere reality, a place in which myth and the captivating magic of Africa have survived right up to the present day.

The huts are divided into a children's room where the young Massai spend the night with new born calves and lambs, and also a combined living and sleeping area that is also used for cooking. Crocodiles, hippos, giraffes, hyenas, lions, leopards, buffalo, elephants: this nature reserve is home to all of them. The most species-rich savanna grassland on Earth, and its legendary wilderness, provide a fascinating glimpse into a wonder world of nature, a remarkable harmony of wild animals and wonderful landscapes beneath huge African skies. NPM-DVD-112 - Nature Parks KRUGER NATIONAL PARK South AfricaIn 1898, a small area between Sabie and Crocodile River was designated as a National Wild Animal Reserve, thus making the Kruger National Park Africa's oldest animal sanctuary. It is 450 kilometres long and about 55 kilometres wide and is one of the largest animal parks in the world, with 147 animal species, over 500 bird varieties, and 114 different reptiles. The Kruger Park is divided into three areas. Whilst bush land and mopane trees form the northern half, the wide grass plains of the central region are home to a large number of wild animals. In the lush vegetation of the southern half, that consists mainly of acacia trees and bush land, is the preferred habitat of rhinos, hippos and many other wild animals. The elephant, rhino, African buffalo, lion and leopard make up the so-called 'Big Five' of the Kruger National Park and in spite of its dry climate there is an immense variety of plant life with a rich assortment of trees, bushes, grasses, ferns, climbers and herbaceous plants. Located on the southern bank of the Sabie Rive, the Skukuza Camp is the park's organisational centre and can accommodate over 1000 visitors. In 1902, this location was the base camp for the co-founder of the Kruger National Park, Colonel Stevenson-Hamilton. The camp is situated on the 'Lion Safari Road', one of the five most favoured routes for observing animals in the entire park, and a well maintained road network connects the park's 24 camps with the most interesting sights. On the edge of the park's winding sandy tracks there is often a chance encounter with a prowling hyena and the road itself is popular with rhinos and many other creatures that appear to be determined to be photographed by anxious tourists! The Kruger National Park that was once the Mecca of the Big Game Hunter is now an idyllic paradise of Nature and a veritable Noah's Ark for much of Africa's wildlife.
