VPG-DVD-196 - SALZBURG The Austrian city of Salzburg is a city of bishops as well as being the birthplace of world famous classical composer, Amadeus Mozart. The cathedral is located in the heart of the city, a Baroque building situated on the same site as the city's first church and now surrounded by several squares. Even today the cultural picture of the city on the Salzach is dominated by more than a hundred churches, castles and palaces. Hohensalzburg is the largest fully-preserved medieval fortress in Middle Europe. It is located one hundred and nineteen metres above the city and covers over thirty thousand square metres. It is like a small medieval town within itself with several buildings, courtyards and squares. Bastions with mighty towers were built at strategic points and together with powerful gates they make the fortress near impregnable. It is believed that during a siege the famous Salzburg Bull tricked the city's attackers into believing that the population had a good stock of food! Medieval Salzburg became a 'German Rome', an Italian looking city of Early Baroque design. The Getreide-Gasse is the main street in the centre of the city and in former times was called, Trabe-Gasse, a name that demonstrates the fact that the people there were always in a hurry! The city is a work of art within itself, an historic treasure chest of timeless beauty, full of southern flair and joie de vivre. Salzburg is most definitely a Baroque gem located in the very heart of Europe.

NPM-DVD-121 - Nature Parks HOHE TAUERN AustriaIn the centre of Austria's Eastern Alps is one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Europe, the Hohe Tauern National Park that measures eighteen hundred square kilometres and extends across three federal states, Carinthia, Salzburg and East Tyrol. The three thousand metre high Ankogel mountain group makes up the eastern section of the Hohe Tauern where the impressive mountain scenery shows both its wild as well as its romantic side. Numerous walking routes such as the Seebachtal Nature Trail are not only a good way by which to enjoy the scenery but also provide valuable information about the region. A good starting point for various trips into the Grossglockner area is the village of Heiligenblut that has a population of around a thousand and is one of the highest mountain villages in Austria. At the foot of the Hohe Tauern in the Saltzburg section of the Glockner Group, is Kaprun, that, together with Zell am See is a popular tourist centre. At this high altitude the lake is an amazing sight yet it did not originate naturally but was created by Man: the picturesque Mooserboden Reservoir is part of the Glockner-Kaprun Power Station. Sankt Veit is located at an altitude of fifteen hundred metres above sea level and is the highest mountain spa in Austria and features centuries old farm houses and a fine village church. The vast variety and originality of this region highlight the unique value of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Indeed, within this special place in the heart of Europe is one of nature's final sanctuaries.

GTR-DVD-1087 - The magnificent buildings within Mozart's famous city of Salzburg are not the only reason why it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Austria. The Prince Archbishop, Wolf Dietrich, ordered that Salzburg Cathedral be built according to Italian Early Baroque design. It was constructed between 1614 and 1628 on the site of a previous Romanic building. At one time the Getreidegasse served as the main road of the old city and on January 27th 1756, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in house number seven.. 119 metres above the town is one of Middle Europe's most well preserved castles, Hohensalzburg, which covers an area of around 30,000 square metres. The centre of Kapitel Square is dominated by a Schwemme, a fountain that dates back to the 18th century where the city's horses were washed down. There are numerous impressive sacred buildings in the city such as the Baroque Kollegien Church designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer Von Erlach. A fascinating and remarkably attractive park surrounds the Lustschloss Hellbrunn that dates back to both the Manieristic and Early Baroque period. The interior of the palace is as beautiful as its external appearance. Illusionist architectural paintings were a popular device designed to alienate reality. Due to the exquisite taste of the royal archbishops of a glorious age, today Salzburg is one of the most beautiful Baroque cities in Europe. A land of majestic buildings and of the rural culture and history of past centuries. For more than three hundred years Vienna was the residence of the emperor and the nobility had their fine palaces built in this city that was dominated by Baroque architecture.
