VPG-DVD-217 - WACHAU Our journey across Wachau begins in Stein, a town district of Krems, one of the oldest cultivated landscapes in Austria. The sole 'Gateway Into The Wachau' is a unique region of the Danube between Krems-Stein and Melk. A total of a hundred and thirteen houses encapsulate the medieval city that was built along the Steiner Road on the banks of the Danube. Today the town's facades and entrance-ways are decorated in traditional style and compliment the impressive Renaissance splendour of the buildings. A little further on and the river valley narrows and becomes even more beautiful. The blue-white church tower of Dürnstein proudly welcomes those who visit the town. It is a landmark of the Wachau. This small medieval town nestles picturesquely along the rock walls above the Danube and it lives and breathes the history that made it world famous. The beauty of the landscape is overwhelming. Colour dominates the soft hollows between the rocky slopes that flank the Danube Valley and the shining green of the summer months leads to a spectacle of colour that leads up to the wine harvest, a true spectacle of nature! Thirty-six kilometres of the Danube Valley with magnificent cities, castles and historic ruins, a Baroque monastery and an old vine-growing culture. The Wachau, a priceless gem situated alongside the far-stretching waters of the Danube.

VPG-DVD-221 - SALZKAMMERGUT The Salzkammergut is located in the heart of Austria. A wonderful and romantic landscape set between breathtaking mountains and beautiful lakes. In the Middle Ages St. Wolfgang was one of the most visited pilgrimage destinations in Central Europe having attracted seventy thousand of the faithful each year. In the summer of 1873 the first paddle-steamer was introduced and the region eventually became famous due to an operetta, Das Weisse Rössl Am Wolfgangsee. The area's main village is Fuschl that is situated on the Fuschlsee at the western end of the Salzkammergut. A tranquil and romantic lake that has inspired countless composers, poets and authors. The lake is a glimmering turquoise colour and the surrounding landscape is truly superb. It takes about three hours to walk around it. Shaped like a sickle the Mondsee is situated between the Drachenwand and Schafberg Mountains. The lake is eleven kilometres long and seventy metres deep and has a relatively warm temperature due to its sheltered location and lack of inlets from cold mountain rivers. During the Ice Age a huge lime plate broke into two sections and created the Dachstein Mountains and the Toten Gebirge. The Dachstein is a fabulous world of imposing and majestic rock and ice. Its remote location set between picturesque mountains and lakes is truly captivating. A landscape of both history and culture the SALZKAMMERGUT a veritable paradise in the heart of Europe!

OTT-DVD-122 - On Tour... BLUE DANUBE CRUISE WACHAUBLUE DANUBE CRUISE WACHAU Wachau is a World Heritage Sight, a thirty-six long combination of cultivated landscape and the blue and mighty Danube. A boat journey on the famous river is the ideal way of observing the captivating villages and splendid wine growing terraces along its banks. The old town of Stein extends along a narrow section of the river with attractive buildings set amid atmospheric lanes in which beautifully restored facades shine out in the bright sunlight. Krems was first mentioned in 995 A.D and its main square contains several impressive houses that once belonged to the city's middle class inhabitants. The facades of the 16th and 18th century buildings are historic treasures, one of which was the birthplace of the mother of Franz Liszt. In Weissenkirchen where the Granite Gneiss Plateau, its rock formations and Bohemian forests reach down to the river, are fertile terraces on which grow Austria's most famous wine. The wine is beautifully balanced and its appealing lightness and gentle acidity are what make it so popular. In spite of devastating fires in 1793, Weissenkirchen is now one of the most picturesque villages of the Wachau. The village of Spitz lies in the heart of the Wachau and is closely associated with steam navigation that was first used on the Danube in 1829. The Danube Valley enjoys a temperate climate and strong vines flourish on the slopes of Tausendeimer Mountain. The Danube Valley of the Wachau is a romantic gem set amid a glorious landscape.

I-40 begins in Barstow & follows some of Route 66 through the Mojave Desert. Along the route is Newberry Springs, most don't take much notice of the 117 sq mile community, at least not until 1988 with the release of the film "Bagdad Cafe". Now, people travel from all over the globe to sit & enjoy a meal at the small, homey Cafe. If you haven't seen the film & you like surreal kinds of comedy, check it out. It's a story of lost people finding themselves.Besides the Bagdad Cafe, there are two other things that came to mind as we traveled down old Route 66, John Steinbecks, "The Grapes of Wrath" - to a short lived TV show called "Route 66"...for all too short a time, I pretend I'm in that Corvette cruising down Route 66 back in her day...Route 66 began in 1926 and was decommissioned in 1985. The 2,448 miles of highway, started in Chicago, Illinois & passed through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona & ended almost to the ocean in California.Steinbeck referred to RT 66 as "The Mother Road" in 1930 & the name stuck. In 1960, "Route 66" was a hot TV show filmed on location all over the US, along the course of the famous highway. And then there's Nat King Cole singing "Get Your Kicks On Route 66". I can think of no other road that has been immortalized more - in song & clubs, organizations & even museums.******************If you'd really like to experience all that was & is of the Mother Road, check out this site:TOUR ROUTE 66 ON A HARLEY-DAVIDSON -http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/Motorcycle_Tours/route66_details.jsp?locale=en_US******************Yes, my 4-day Mother's Day weekend was wonderful! Four generations invaded Laughlin, Nevada to celebrate. 13 family members from Arizona & CA made the trek to the tri-state area, where the Mojave Desert meets the Colorado River. Ranging in age from 1 to 81!The Riverside Resort has just about everything, Although it is a gambling casino/hotel, it has many family friendly amenities - 34 lane bowling alley, six-plex movie theater, 2 arcades, 3 swimming pools and a special place for young ones called Kid Kastle. And I'm not even gonna try to count how many restaurants it has. :)On our return trip we found a little park next to the gas station, I couldn't resist climbing aboard the caboose & pretending I was on a train trip...haven't rode a train in years. :P

GTR-DVD-1178 - As with almost anywhere within the Wachau, the clocks of the dreamy town of Stein seem to run a little slower than in other parts of Austria. Its well preserved ensemble of old houses is not uncommon and the Wachau region enjoys a good reputation for its fine historic treasures and elegant buildings. Krems is like a fairytale town. The wrought iron signs on its buildings and its wonderful historic atmosphere are truly captivating. The former stronghold and subsequent rival of Vienna contains several beautiful lanes and imposing buildings that reflect the wealth of its former citizens. Amid the vast terraces of the Wachau vineyards is the village of Weissenkirchen in which several hospitable inns provide their customers with an ideal opportunity to sample the wines of this region. Winegrowing has a long tradition in this section of the Danube and the area between Krems and Melk is one of the oldest cultivated landscapes in Austria. The Wachau is a landscape full of warmth as well as being steeped in history and age old traditions. GTR-DVD-1220 - Prague, the Golden City, does full justice to its name. The beauty of this historically rich metropolis on the banks of the Vlatava has been well known for several centuries. One of the city's many architectural focal points is the Charles Bridge which since the 14th century has connected the old town district with part of the Hradschin, Prague Castle. Prague's Astronomical Clock is world famous and not only does it display the time, it also shows the date and the corresponding sign of the Zodiac. South of the famous Hradschin Castle is the most ostentatious residence in the city, the Palais Waldstein that is of Late Italian Renaissance design. Beautiful and spacious gardens round off the elegant appearance of the palace that was built between 1624 and 1630. Petrin Hill and its sixty metre tall iron tower that dates back to 1891 is yet another attraction offered by the capital of the Czech Republic. A number of the buildings in the historic Jewish district of Josefov, such as the Old-New Synagogue, have been well preserved and the historic, romantic and enchanting atmosphere of Prague's Jewish Cemetery has been the subject of several novels. Considering the abundance of its historic monuments it is not surprising that Prague continues to shine out in all the splendour of its glorious and colourful past. GTR-DVD-1096 - Hallstatt is located on the shores of a sleepy Austrian lake, surrounded by high hills and the Dachstein Mountain Range. Similar to a fjord, Hallstatt Lake extends in front of the picturesque village that was one of the earliest and most unique settlements in this region. Due to the early discovery of large salt deposits in the surrounding mountains, the village has a proud history that dates back a thousand years and archaeology has revealed that this area was inhabited from around five thousand years B.C. Long before Christianity came to Salzkammergut and prior to any churches being built, an independent prehistoric culture evolved. The village contains a rich variety of historic buildings and its churches contain precious works of art such as a Late Gothic altar created by Leonhard Astl. The old marketplace and fountain is crowned by a trinity column that dates back to 1744. The welcoming facades of the dwellings have graced this atmospheric village since the 16th century and the market probably dates back to the 14th century. In 1891 Lake Street played a vital role for the village's busy commercial traffic and the impressive Countryside and Pre-History Museum displays the history of salt mining in the area and its importance to the village. In 1846 the Salinen civil servant, Johann Georg Ramsauer, made a sensational discovery when he discovered a prehistoric burial ground in the village. During seventeen years of excavation a total of twenty thousand objects were discovered in nine hundred and eighty graves. These discoveries subsequently led to the establishment of Hallstatt's intriguing and fascinating culture. 7DY-DVD-155 - The Salzkammergut is located in the heart of Austria, a wonderful and romantic landscape set between breathtaking mountains and beautiful lakes. It was here that the Emperor Of Austria once spent the summer months and enjoyed all the benefits of this health resort in which salt, this region's white gold, was once worked and where objects that date back to prehistoric times have been discovered. St. Gilgen is situated at the western end of the lake. It is set among captivating scenery at the foot of the Zwölferhorn Mountain that has a cable car service. Attractive houses, hotels and a city hall contain modern comforts hidden beyond a romantic façade and it was here that Mozart's mother was born. A journey by hot air balloon is an amazing way in which to explore this fascinating landscape and from the sky it is far easier to gain a better perspective of the geology below. Nature defined the borders of this landscape: in the east the landscape stretches to the edge of the Tote Gebirge, a labyrinth of mountains with areas of karst and fields of mountain pine - in the south it extends to the snow covered Dachstein Mountains and their many caves. In the south west, the Tennen-Gebirge. In the west is the broad sweep of the Fuschl-See that marks the edge of the mountain region and in the north are the gentle hills of the Voralpen. Within the idyllic Almtal and its main village of Grünau is the untouched and romantic Alm See which is surrounded by the rugged mountain slopes of the Toten Gebirge that was formed by the glaciers of the Last Ice Age. Well appointed mountain huts and picturesque views across the gigantic peaks of the Gosaukamm Mountains to as far as the Bischofsmütze are a welcome reward to all who venture here. The views here are famous across the world. With the Dachstein Mountains as a backdrop this scene has featured on many a picture postcard. Its remote location set between mountains and lakes is truly captivating. A landscape of both history and culture: The Salzkammergut, a veritable paradise in the heart of Europe!
