GTR-DVD-1257 - Near to Vienna is a place where the sky meets with the earth. For almost nine hundred years the Stift Klosterneuburg Monastery has had a special relationship in the spiritual, sacred and cultural life of Austria. Its architecture dates back to the Baroque era and the rule of Emperor Karl The Sixth. In the twelfth century, church architecture was based upon Italian design. At that time a castle was also built at this location for the sponsor of the monastery, Leopold The Pious. In addition to its fine sacred architecture the Stift Klosterneuburg enchants due to its worldly side that can be seen in the emperor's private rooms which demonstrate the luxurious lifestyle of the Habsburgers whose influence was at its zenith during the reign of Karl The Sixth. The monastery's most valuable possession and also one of the most impressive works of art of the Middle Ages is the Verduner Altar that was named after the artist, Nikolaus Of Verdun, and was completed in 1181. GTR-DVD-1193 - The fine buildings of the Benedictine monastery of Melk majestically rise up from a plateau above the fascinating town on the River Danube. The elegant, yellow buildings of the monastery have become well-known far beyond Austria. The monastery's eighteen hundred manuscripts are extremely valuable and although many treasures were destroyed by a devastating fire the oldest texts date back to the early 9th century. The 18th century marked the beginning of extensive construction work in the monastery that subsequently transformed the church into an enchanting example of Baroque design. The exquisite design of the church's splendid interior was mostly the work of Italian architect, Antonio Beduzzi. But it is the remarkable architecture of the central Baroque buildings that have given Melk its reputation as being an icon of occidental monastery culture. GTR-DVD-1132 - The Chorherrenstift Neustift in the Southern Tyrol has a long and proud history. Its origins date back to the 12th century. The ancient domicile of the Royal Court of Neustift and a former hospice known as Engelsburg are located close to this monastic settlement. In 1189 Propst Konrad The Second Of Rodank ordered the construction of a sanctuary for pilgrims, the sick and the poor. The Collegiate's library has a remarkable collection of books and its captivating internal décor indicates the prosperity of a bygone time. Provost Leopold The First Of Zanna ordered the costly construction of the splendid library hall designed by architect Giuseppe Sartori of Trentino. The interior of the impressive Collegiate Church dates back to the 18th century. The building's decor is typical Late Baroque and its transition to Southern Germany's Rococo period. In addition to the elaborate creations of the Wessobrunner artists the ceiling frescos of the Augsburg artist, Matthäus Günther, are particularly noteworthy. Beyond the Collegiate there are marvellous fruit plantations and vineyards and The Turkish Tower is a reminder of the region's historic past. As with the entire area of the monastery the unique treasures of the Chorherrenstift Neustift have been preserved for posterity.
