VPG-DVD-126 - STOCKHOLM Stockholm is a city that floats on water: the 'Venice Of The North' was built on fourteen islands. Gamla Stan, or 'Old Town', is the name of the city's three central islands that are linked by numerous bridges. Its ambience is that of the Middle Ages and small and mysterious alleys and beautiful buildings that date back to the 7th century characterise the life of the traders who once lived there. The old town's most dominant building is the royal castle of Kunglia Slottet. Larger than London's Buckingham Palace it contains six hundred and eight rooms. The Stadshuset is one of the city's landmarks and was designed in Medieval style and with a tower that is almost 106 metres tall. The most important artists of the time were engaged in the creation of the Blue Hall in which the Noble Prize ceremony now takes place each year. Those who appreciate museums will not be disappointed by Stockholm as it boasts more than fifty! The National Museum located on the Strömmen Canal contains countless works of art. Due to the passion for art of various of Sweden's royal family and also generous public donations, the museum has a truly outstanding collection of French paintings that date back to the 18th century. Six kilometres south of Stockholm is a cemetery that has been designated as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, the Skogskyrkogarden, the final resting place for many of Stockholm's past inhabitants and also some of its most famous, including Greta Garbo. This extraordinary complex took thirty years to build and is unique in the world. Since 1998 this centuries-old Hanse city has also been the cultural capital of Europe. This city of the Vikings is a true architectural gem!

OTT-DVD-140 - The fascinating journey on the famous Bergensbanen begins in Norway's capital city of Oslo which contains a large variety of interesting historic buildings that are well worth a visit. Indeed, the city originated in the middle of the eleventh century during the reign of King Harald Hårdråde. For almost a century Norway was part of Sweden and in 1905 a referendum put an end to its unpopular union and Norway achieved its Independence. The construction of the railroad posed a major challenge for the engineers of that time and its construction took many years. The first section of today's Bergensbanen was completed in 1883 and extended from Bergen to Voss. On its journey to Bergen the Bergensbanen travels across the highest plateau in Europe, the eight thousand square kilometre, Hardangervidda. At one thousand two hundred and twenty two metres above sea level Finse is the Bergensbanen's highest station and was opened in 1909 when Norway's King Hakon was one of the first passengers to travel on the new railroad. The journey on the Bergensbanen not only travels through one of the most charming and natural landscapes in Europe it also features the history of Norway: a unique adventure indeed!

GTR-DVD-1207 - Since 1981 the Baroque castle of Drottningholm, situated twelve kilometres from Stockholm, has been the official residence of the Swedish royal family. Within the beautiful Drottningholm Park is an exceptional architectural jewel, Kina Slott, a picturesque Chinese pleasure palace that is one of the most captivating examples of the exotic world of the Far East as visualised by Sweden's former aristocracy. After the Swedish East India Company first arrived in China in 1733 everything Chinese was highly fashionable. In each corner of Europe numerous buildings were suddenly inspired by Chinese art and architecture thus many tea-houses, pavilions and tiny pleasure palaces became in vogue. The pavilion still contains several valuable silk wallpapers, lacquered umbrellas and other exotic examples. An exquisite collection of Chinese porcelain is one of the most celebrated exhibits as porcelain played a vital role in the dining hall where food arrived in quite spectacular manner - the table rose up directly from the kitchen! Considering such ingenuity it is understandable that Kina Slott continues to enjoy much popularity right up to the present day. GTR-DVD-1226 - The elegant tower of Storkyrkan Cathedral rises majestically above Gamla Stan, the old and historic district of Sweden's capital city of Stockholm. Storkyrkan, which means, 'the great church', is the oldest church in the Swedish metropolis. The history of Stockholm's cathedral, that combines both Gothic as well as Baroque design, is closely associated with the Swedish royal family. With the exception of King Gustav The Fifth, each of Sweden's kings has been crowned here due to the ideal setting offered by this glorious building. Storkyrkan was not only important to Sweden for its historic architecture and remarkable works of art, it was also of much religious significance as it was from here that Swedish reformer, Olaus Petri, began to spread the Lutheran message across Sweden during the first half of the 16th century. The cathedral also contains the oldest remaining historical portrayal of Stockholm and a strange phenomenon of light that once occurred in this city was also the subject of this painting that dates back to 1535. Storkyrkan is a religious building of much import with regard to the development of the clerical world as well as to the history of Sweden. GTR-DVD-1079 - In 1703, Tsar Peter The Great founded St. Petersburg in the swampy delta mouth of the River Newa and today it is a living monument to the lives and times of Russia's Imperial Tsars. The Winter Palace contains Russia's largest museum, the Eremitage, which houses more than two and a half million exhibits. Since Peter the Great, Russian rulers purchased many major works of art, but it was Catherine The Great who acquired complete collections from the auction houses of Europe. The Admiralty, with its needle-shaped, gold-plated tower, is one of the city's most famous landmarks, its grand architecture depicting the emergence of Russia as a naval power and the marvellous Isaaks Cathedral has the third largest dome in the world. Twenty four thousand tree stumps were used for its foundations and it can accommodate a congregation of 14,000. At the widest part of the Newa is the regal and dominant, Peter And Paul Fortress that Peter The First had built to protect his capital city from Sweden and to guard Russia's passage to the East Sea. The focal point of the fortress is the Peter And Paul Cathedral that served as the burial place of the Tsars and contains the marble coffin of Peter the Great. Russian Baroque and Russian Classicism were established in St. Petersburg -- city of monumental events, outstanding architecture and an Imperial metropolis on the grand scale. GTR-DVD-1085 - Kungliga Slottet is a majestic royal castle that is located on the highest point of the island of Stadsholmen in the middle of the attractive historical old town of Stockholm known as Gamla Stan. The castle became an official royal residence when Swedish monarch, King Adolf Fredrik, resided there. With its 608 rooms the castle is considered to be one of the greatest royal residences in the world and home to the Swedish crown jewels. The design of the Royal castle and its splendid facade was created by the architect, Nicodemus Tessin The Younger. His father, Nicodemus The Elder, built the Tre Kronor Castle at the end of the 17th century which was named after the three crowns that are depicted in the Swedish coat of arms. In 1697 a devastating fire swept through Stockholm and also the Tre Kronor Castle. Shortly after the fire, the castle of Kungliga Slottet, designed in Italian Baroque style, rose up from the ruins of Tre Kronor Castle. For more than 250 years the cityscape of Sweden's capital of Stockholm would not have been complete without the splendour of Kungliga Slottet. 7DY-DVD-146 - Finland is a land of a thousand lakes and eternal forests, a land of log cabins and Orthodox churches - a midsummer's dream in the extreme north of Europe. Helsinki, 'The Daughter of the Baltic', 'The Gibraltar of the North', a dividing line between east and west and a modern and liberal minded metropolis. Founded in 1550 by Swedish king, Gustav Vasa, as a trading centre, in 1812 Tsar Alexander The First made it the capital of the Principality Of Finland. Turku is the oldest city in Finland and is the country's first capital city from where Finnish culture was born. It is still evocative of the Middle Ages. The sea, a magnificent island landscape and picturesque timber houses are typical of one of the oldest cities in the Gulf Of Bothnia, Uusikaupunki. It was there in 1712 that a peace treaty was signed between Russia and Sweden and this small, quiet town has a long maritime history. Further north is a town of seafarers and traders, Kokkola, of which the old town boasts the largest number of timber built houses in Finland. The cleric, Anders Chydenius, once lived here and laid the foundation of Liberalism, the freedom of both religion and trade. Oulu is the flourishing centre of Northern Finland. Along with its many green areas this city by the sea comes alive during the spring and summer months. Despite the harsh climate, tropical plants are popular in the city. The hilly landscape of the spacious Pallas Ounastunturi National Park is located in the north west, close to the Swedish border. Yellow-green reindeer moss and dense layers of many other varieties grow on the seemingly endless hills of primeval stone and gneiss. The plant life of this region always surprises those who encounter it for the first time. Finland is a country that boasts more lakes than any other. It is full of picturesque, natural beauty, unique cultural treasures and historic locations: a tranquil paradise set in the extreme north.
