VPG-DVD-180 - TYROL Set within the magnificent Alps the Tyrol is a picturesque federal state in the west of Austria and is one of the most beautiful areas in Europe. It contains many ancient towns, monasteries and fortresses that highlight the region's history and its proud and hardy mountain people. Kitzbühel was once a prosperous mining town but today it is a world famous ski resort that is also popular in the summer months. The old town with its pretty middle class buildings that date back to the fifteenth century is a fine example of Austria's country's rural architecture. Around four thousand people live in the village of Wildschönau that is situated in a fascinating valley of the Kitzbüheler Alps that extend for some twenty four kilometres. Niederau is the entrance to the Wildschönau region and Oberau is the main village in a valley that features eye catching farm houses whose carved wooden balconies are decorated with splendid flowers. VPG-DVD-103 - TUSCANY Tuscany was named after the Etruskans, who were called 'Tusci' by the Romans. The kingdom was eventually divided into independent dukedoms and, from 1531, the Medici ruled, a family of businessmen and bankers. Capital of Tuscany is Florence, a city of art and joie de vivre and past home of important artists and sculptors such as Donatello, Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci, plus the writers Dante and Boccaccio, not to mention the scientist, Galileo Galilei. Lucca, one of Tuscany's most important historical towns, rises from the lower reaches of the Serchio river, on a former swamp. Dating from the Middle Ages, it is surrounded by a massive 4.2 kilometre long brick wall which helped the town retain its independence, and also protected it from the floodwaters of the Serchio. The precarious imperfection of The Leaning Tower Of Pisa is in stark contrast to the grandiose palaces and religious buildings of the Medici family and the natural contours of the hills and mountains of this European nirvana complete the connection between art and nature. VPG-DVD-166 - SULTANATE OF OMAN The Sultanate Of Oman is a fabulous land full of surprises, a splendid example of original Arabia that extends from the Straits Of Hormuz to the southern Dhofar. Up until the 1970's the third largest country in the Arabian Peninsula was only accessible by various caravan routes but today it boasts an abundance of mysterious desert towns and splendid palaces. The white city of Sohar is the historic harbour of the Islamic world and the 'Gateway To China'. It is still guarded by the white Sohar Fort, a mighty four-storey structure that dates back to the 14th century. The Hajar Mountains extend for almost six hundred kilometres from the Musandam Peninsula in the north to its eastern sections. They are also known as the Oman Mountains and divide the coast from the inland. Oman covers around three hundred thousand square kilometres and is one of the most sparsely settled countries in the world with only one and a half million inhabitants. Nizwa, the religious center of the Omans, has a moving past that manifests itself in the city's defensive fortress. Until the 12th century it was the capital of the Desert State of Oman. Even today this oasis city and trading metropolis has lost none of its former importance. Al-Hamra is the name of a three hundred year old oasis village that dates back to the reign of Imam Saif Bin Sultan. At the end of the 17th century members of the Abriyin Tribe settled here the descendants of whom still live in the Jebal-Akhdar Mountains. Al-Hamra means 'The Red One', an Arabic name that is also to be found in the word 'Alhambra', in Spain's Granada. The Sultanate Of Oman is a treasure trove of rarities. Its twelve thousand year old history is visible throughout the entire country and the beauty of the mysterious Arabian Peninsula is a truly captivating experience.

VPG-DVD-191 - SICILY Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and the most diverse region in Italy, a land of gods and natural forces and a place of ancient cultures. Catania in the north east of the island is Sicily's second largest city that has been strongly influenced by earthquakes and also the volcanic activity of Mount Etna. It is believed that Greek settlers from Chalkidi founded it and some centuries later it was conquered by the Romans, and later the Arabs brought the city a new wave of prosperity. Noto is a charming town with around twenty thousand inhabitants and it is one of the most beautiful enclosed Baroque towns in Sicily. However, many of Noto's historic buildings have been neglected for many years and are thus in somewhat less than perfect condition. The Catedrale Di San Nicolò also fell into disrepair as a result of continued neglect and this caused both its dome and part of its roof to collapse in 1996. A proud and mighty volcano rises above eastern Sicily. Mount Etna, the largest volcano in Europe, is the undisputed ruler of this fascinating Mediterranean island. The snow on the summit region of Etna obscures the fact that deep within the volcano is an unimaginable natural furnace with a temperature of around a thousand degrees Celsius. Marsala was given its name by the Arabs who called it 'Marsal-Allah', 'God's Harbour'. The monumental city gate is a reminder of the landing of Giuseppe Garibaldis on the 8th of March, 1860. In the mountain area close to Palermo, another wonderful city featured on our journey, is the picturesque town of Monreale, a townscape that for more than eight hundred years has been dominated by a single building. Monreale Cathedral was built due to a struggle for power between the Bishop Of Palermo and the Norman King, William. Sicily is exquisite. An ancient island of both discovery and pleasure.

VPG-DVD-194 - PALERMO Once known as the stronghold of the Mafia, Palermo, the capital of Sicily, has gradually improved its image and the joie de vivre of its inhabitants has turned it into one of the most lively cities in Italy. The monumental Palermo Cathedral is located on the edge of the Piazza Cathedrale, throughout the centuries a place for rendezvous, celebrations and justice. Following the city's conquest by the Saracens an ancient cathedral on this site was transformed into a Friday mosque and was later used for Christian ceremonies. When in 1072 the Normans conquered the island they were so captivated by this 'paradise on earth' that they were careful to preserve it. They admired its oriental splendour and Arabian-Norman architecture but when the kings of Aragon attained power the golden age of Palermo came to an end. The Castello Della Zisa is the largest building of Arabian design in Palermo and in former times it was a residence situated within a regal park that was used for the royal sport of hawking. In a mountain area close to Palermo is the picturesque town of Monreale, a townscape that for more than eight hundred years has been dominated by a single building: Monreale Cathedral was built due to a struggle for power between the Bishop Of Palermo and the Norman King, William The Second. The Sicilian metropolis of Palermo has been both feared and loved but it most assuredly remains 'a flower within a golden shell'.

It was here that in 1882 the French created their administrative headquarters and main capital city. Compared to other southeast Asian cities that have developed into modern metropolis' at breathtaking speed, Hanoi could be described as being a provincial city. The Hoh Chi Minh Museum, a three storey concrete building, was inaugurated in May 1990 to commemorate Hoh's one hundredth birthday. Den Dao Quan is one of the most beautiful Taoist temples in Vietnam and an oasis of tranquillity. It is a place dedicated to the worship of benevolent spirits and for those who believe in divine and spiritual natural powers. Haiphong is the most important industrial harbour town in North Vietnam and has a population of one and a half million. Under French rule thousands of workers built this city at record speed and the harbour was enlarged, making it the largest in Indo China. Hoa Binh is one of the north's less attractive provincial towns but this, the former centre of a prehistoric Bronze Age culture on the Black River, is the gateway to the mountains of the north. Located within a remote and mountainous landscape, the village of Ban Lac Thai is a peaceful place set within an elevated and fertile valley. It is believed that the Viet are related to the Thai people and originally separated from the Muong tribe when they cultivated the Red River Delta. Everywhere the Thai folk offer hand made arts and crafts for sale such as knitted blankets, woven cloth and numerous bags. From the nostalgic capital of Hanoi as far as the mountain tribes of the north, North Vietnam is a country of charm and beauty with natural wonders and ancient cultures full of age-old traditions and new hope for the future!

VPG-DVD-204 - COSTA DEL SOL The Costa Del Sol is the name of the southern Mediterranean coast of Spain. In former times a variety of bumpy roads connected the region's sandy bays and remote fishing villages but today its modern roads cater for mass tourism. Almunecar is the main tourist centre on this section of the coast. Once a tranquil fishing village, it's now a busy coastal resort. A wide road separates clean, extensive beaches from huge apartment blocks that were constructed during an amazing transformation of the coastline. Torrox is an Andalusian mountain village that has so far managed to remain off the tourist trail and in which village life continues as it always has done. Since Phoenician times Malaga has been a busy trading port that was defended by the Castillo De Gibralforo that is located on the summit of a mountain. The large bay, with its protective mountain range in the north, enjoys a mild climate throughout the entire year. Around ten kilometres south of Malaga is the modern coastal resort of Torremolinos, since the 1950's a centre of mass tourism. The city developed at a wild pace and soon had all the attributes of a modern holiday resort, with innumerable huge skyscrapers, bars and restaurants and also endless sandy beaches and exciting entertainment facilities. Marbella is the prima donna of the Costa Del Sol and a marvellous rendezvous for the stars of both stage and screen plus a leisure resort for the international jet set. The yachting harbour of Puerto Banus is the true symbol of Marbella and its quay has a colourful variety of bars, cafés, restaurants and exquisite shops. The journey through fiery southern Spain ends with the Rock Of Gibraltar. Dreamy harbour towns cultural metropolises with a Moorish past and Christian buildings and white villages. The Costa Del Sol is full of history and magical atmosphere. The sun is just a bonus!

VPG-DVD-193 - BRETAGNE Brittany in the rugged west of France features picturesque old towns, castles and fortresses plus austere medieval cathedrals. Nostalgia and romantic harbour villages still exist here and it is also a land of menhirs and fishermen. Rennes is the capital of the region and it is here that our journey through Brittany begins. It is a small town in which both medieval and classical buildings stand side by side. In 1720 a disastrous fire that raged for seven days destroyed a number of historic houses. Several crooked, partly renovated frame-work houses are situated in the alleys of the old town, their carved windows and oriels create a medieval atmosphere. Thirty two kilometres south is Vitré, a picture postcard town with a city wall, narrow lanes and a castle. English troops besieged the town for many years until the lords of the castle finally paid a large ransom for their freedom. Le Mont Saint Michel with its historic buildings is located on an eighty metre high granite mound and is like something from a fairytale. Powerful fortifications surround the small town and the abbey at the top of the rock. Due to its unique location and architectural splendour this picturesque village is often referred to as the Wonder Of The Occident. Dinan is a small enchanting French town on the banks of the Rance is one of the most beautiful and well preserved mediaeval towns in Brittany. The western part of France has many faces and Brittany truly is a land of myths, castles, fishing villages and historic old towns.

A place of both inspiration and contemplation. Since Phoenician times the earlier 'Malaca' was a busy trading port that was defended by the Castillo De Gibralforo. The Cathedral, also known as 'La Manquita', symbolises a catholic victory on the former site of a mosque. On the edge of the city centre is the Moorish fortress of Alcazaba that was once a fortified residence on the hills of Castillo. The second largest city in Andalusia also became known as the birthplace of its famous son, world famous artist Pablo Ruiz Picasso. Since the 1950's the modern coastal resort of Torremolinos has attracted mass tourism with a numerous variety of huge hotel skyscrapers, bars and restaurants. In the hilly inland area of the Costa Del Sol is the pretty white mountain village of Mijas. A small hilltop bullfight arena shines bright white along with the houses of the surrounding area. Marbella, the prima donna of the Costa Del Sol, serves as a rendezvous for the stars of stage and screen and a leisure resort for the international jet set. Another short excursion into the mountains near the coast leads to Casares, a sleepy mountain village crowned by the ruins of a Moorish Castle. During the Roman Carthaginian Wars Cadiz played an important role as a trading centre. After the Moors, came the Normans and in 1262, the city fell into the hands of the Christian king, Alfonso. Dreamy harbour towns, cultural metropolises with a Moorish past, Christian buildings and white villages. Beauty in the Garden Of Eden -- that's Andalusia!
