VPG-DVD-173 - VANCOUVER Vancouver is the third largest city in Canada and one of the most beautiful on the American continent, a dynamic metropolis set in a beautiful location with a temperate climate throughout the year. Close to the harbour area the city's skyscrapers have proliferated in recent years. The capital of the southwestern province of British Columbia has developed into an economic centre of renown. The city's oldest buildings were built less than a hundred years ago because the former wooden houses of old Vancouver were destroyed by fire. Several buildings reflect the origin of their inhabitants and are similar to those in the United States and Europe. Inspired by the Colosseum in Rome, an elegant structure of pink stone and glass, Canada Place, is located in the busy centre of the new harbour district and is also the city's most recent landmark. Close by is Harbour Centre, a modern skyscraper complex with a shopping centre and a Skylift to the top floor. A glass elevator transports visitors to a one hundred and sixty seven-metre high observation platform where the view across the city, harbour and bay is overwhelming. The exciting Skytrain is the city's most popular means of transport, an ultra-modern train built on posts that zig zags its way through the city. Each of the city's most important destinations are easily accessible and it has reduced the city's traffic problems considerably. For the World Exhibition of 1986, on the edge of Chinatown gardeners and craftsmen from Suzhou in China established Canada's first classical Chinese garden, the Doctor Sun Yat Sen Garden. Its ponds, bridges and small pavilions are similar to those in China, masterpieces of Far Eastern garden design. Everything in Vancouver is youthful, attractive and dynamic, a place in which Canadian politeness unites with the Pacific way of life!

VPG-DVD-147 - SHANGHAI Shanghai is a gigantic city that is a meeting point of both east and west. The shoreline is without a doubt the city's main focal point. The city is a combination of the past, present and future and contains the historic monuments and eye-catching buildings of a great metropolis. It was once referred to as 'the whore of Asia': capital of crime, the Paris of the east and the centre of Maoism. But today the city is ruled by modern-thinkin communists and the Yangzi Delta is not only China's largest port but also its new shining star of capitalism. The Oriental Pearl Tower is a mighty four hundred and sixty-eight metre high television tower that contains an entertainment centre, futuristic luxury hotel, fine restaurant and offers the most superb views across the city. In the centre of the city's labyrinth-like shopping alleys a zigzag bridge extends across a small pond to a famous tea house. The bridge was designed thus in order to fend off evil spirits who, it was believed, could walk only in a straight line! Located in the countryside, Suzhou is above all famous for its gardens. The 'Garden Of The Policy Of The Common People' is one of China's four most famous gardens. The complex was built between 1522 and 1566 at the command of an important mandarin and designed according to his wishes. South of Suzhou is Zhou Zhuang that is said to have been the first water village in China. A journey on its canals is certainly worthwhile as the surrounding area is covered with thousands of canals and rivers and many villages in the area are only accessible by boat. Shanghai and its surrounding area has now freed itself from its early growing pains and from the restrictions imposed by Chairman Mao and today enjoys the rich rewards of capitalism.

OTT-DVD-123 - The Shan State Express is the sonorous name of a unique train that travels to the north of Myanmar and to the legendary kingdom of the Shan. It passes through some of the most splendid scenery in South East Asia. We begin in the famous city of Mandalay that has a population of around a million and is a centre of Burmese art. Mandalay was founded around one hundred and fifty years ago and is therefore a relatively young metropolis. It owes its existence to an outstanding monarch, King Mindon who, wishing to escape from his kingdom's turbulent past, had a brand new royal city built. The journey on the Shan State Express begins early in the morning in Mandalay Train Station. Immediately after leaving the city we encounter wonderful scenery that is strongly influenced by a remarkable backdrop of mountains and unspoiled Nature. The railroad travels in a zigzag up the mountains which enables it to negotiate severe slopes that would otherwise be impossible for it to climb vertically. With the arrival of the railroad an increasing number of small farming villages developed most of which were populated by the Shan. Accounting for around eight point five per cent of the total population, the Shan are the largest ethnic minority in Myanmar. Their culture has been a major contribution to the historical development of South East Asia. At numerous railway stations Westerners are sometimes a little wary of the various snacks on offer. When a tempting skewer of food suddenly turns out to be a grilled locust the appetite can sometimes disappear within seconds! The continuing journey on the Shan State Express travels once more into the countryside. Picturesque hills line the route that is close to a famous militarily name, the Burma Road. The Shan State is truly one of the most colourful areas in South East Asia. Due to the extended train route from Mandalay to Lashio the time is hopefully not far away when the poverty of this region will be replaced by a new era of well deserved prosperity.

GTR-DVD-1025 - Today, Carthage is still the centre of Tunisian political power and the past has made its own remarkable and indelible impression. According to legend, the city of Karth Hadasht was founded by Phoenician settlers in the year 814 B.C. The Romans named it, 'Carthage'.The city soon began to control the Numidic hinterland and established colonies in the entire western area of the Mediterranean. Relatively little remains of the original Phoenician and Punic buildings. So far, archaeologists have only managed to recover Roman treasures. A former monastery, Carthage Museum was built on historic land that also contains numerous fascinating relics from both the Punic and Roman epochs. Close to the museum there is an array of water cisterns, an impressive example of Roman engineering. In earlier times, the water cisterns were mainly supplied by the Zaghouans Aquaduct that was built by the Romans at the beginning of the second century A.D. The impressive Carthage Amphitheatre dates back to the time of Emperor Augustinus. It was a popular setting for cruel and bloody entertainment. Following Roman tradition, the amphitheatre's arena was the most important place for public entertainment. Even today one can sense what it must have been like for the gladiators as they ran into the arena to battle for their life. Built between 138 and 161 A.D., Carthage's impressive therms are some of the most beautiful and splendid bathing spas of the entire Roman empire. The spa area originally extended 300m along the coast and was over 100m wide. A well thought out underground canal system was supplied by a network of cisterns that supplied water from the nearby hills down to the baths. In spite of past wars and destruction by the Romans, Carthage has retained its unique and majestic beauty to the present day.
