ROMA Roma Aeterna, eternal city and ancient centre of the world. The Piazza Navona is situated in one of the Italian capital's most beautiful squares in a city that has always been a dream destination for travellers from all over the world. Three large fountains adorn the large oval square that was built above the ruins of a Domitian stadium that dates back to the 3rd century A.D. The Romans had a special regard for fountains the most famous of which is the Fontana Di Trevi. It was designed by Nicolo Salvi for the façade of the Palazzo Poli. The Via Appia Antica was the most important street in ancient Rome and it connected the southern area with the main city and even today one can walk over its ancient cobblestones. Pope Gregor The 13th had the Palazzo Del Quirinale built as his summer residence but it was not long before the Italian monarchs acquired it as their Renaissance palace. Today it is the residence of Italy's President and the daily changing of the guards ceremony is still a popular attraction. The 17th century St. Peter's Square is the most beautiful square in the world and is situated in the centre of the Vatican, an autonomous Church State in the heart of Rome that also contains the imposing and breathtaking Petersdom, the largest Christian church in the world. The allure of this city lies in its combination of chaos and joie de vivre, elegance and creativity. Rome is a complete work of art!

VPG-DVD-163 - MARSEILLE Marseille is the oldest city in France and its largest commercial harbour in the Mediterranean. It is believed that in 600 B.C. travellers from the Greek town of Phokis founded the autonomous town of 'Massalia'. In the Middle Ages the city's main harbour was used by the crusaders to embark on their journey to Jerusalem and it rivalled those of the maritime republics of Genoa, Pisa and Venice. One of Marseille's main landmarks rises high above the harbour, the seafarers' church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Garde. It towers above the city like a fortress and on its bell tower is a gilded ten metre high figure of the Virgin Mary. Several hundred yachts of all sizes crowd into the old harbour where there is often little room for the comings and goings of modern day sailors. It is difficult to imagine that once near-starving slaves were forced to use their last ounce of strength to row their master's galleys into the harbour. Modern harbour complexes require a great deal of space as is well demonstrated by Marseille's new harbour and after Rotterdam it is the second largest in Europe. Two mighty fortresses overlook the harbour: the northern Fort Saint-Jean is the oldest and was used by the Order Of The Knights Of Malta; the Fort Saint Nicolas stands guard over the southern side of the narrow harbour entrance and was built in the 17th century. The tiny island of Chateau D`If was made famous due to a novel by Alexander Dumas, The Count Of Monte Christo. A small museum features many items related to this classic novel and visitors can search for the hole in the wall through which Edmond Dantès is said to have entered the Abbé Faria. A boat trip from Cassis leads to one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe: Les Calanques a unique nature reserve. Shining white limestone cliffs plunge more than four hundred metres into the deep blue sea and extend for twenty kilometres. Marseille - France's wonderful gateway to Africa!

VPG-DVD-222 - HAMBURG Hamburg is a lively metropolis in the north of Germany and contains several green spaces, canals and lakes and provides a good standard of living for its inhabitants. Although known as a harbour city, Hamburg is located on the Elbe and is more than a hundred kilometres from the North Sea. Due to its huge river the sheltered harbour is accessible to large containerships. The Speicherstadt is part of the harbour and is the largest warehouse complex in the world and is crossed by canals that are known as fleets. It was once what amounted to a city of warehouses whose Gothic brick architecture with gables, pinnacles and arches created an extraordinary setting. The tower of St. Michaelis Church is lovingly known as 'Michel' and is one of the city's most famous landmarks and it is also one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in the north of Germany, its white, grey and golden interior being particularly impressive. City Hall highlights the power of the autonomous Hansestadt Hamburg. This impressive building is supported by four thousand oak posts in the former swampland of the Alster. Hamburg is a green city on the water and gateway to the world: a European harbour that contains the spirit of distant lands!

VPG-DVD-202 BANEPA VALLEY Twenty-six kilometres south east of Kathmandu is the Banepa Valley, a captivating place that allures with its beautiful landscape and village sanctuaries. Legend has it that a terrible demon, Chanda, once ruled over the valley. The local people pleaded with Parvati, the daughter of the Himalayas, to free them from the monster. Parvati overpowered the demon and was given the name, Chadeshvari, Mistress of the Chanda. Thus she became one of the maternal Newar deities. Eight kilometres south of Banepa and located between two rivers is the Newar settlement of Panauti. It is the most important historic village in the Valley. In the 13th century Paunauti was the capital of the autonomous kingdom of Banepa and the village has retained its historic authenticity. The village is full of rural calm. Only in September is the idyll disturbed by the 'Carriage Festival'. The shops contain all essential household goods. The transport of both goods and humans is usually done by lorry. They ply their way up and down relentlessly along the demanding terrain. The daily market also contains a good selection of products where fresh fruit and vegetables are in abundance. Life in Nepal is dominated by religion. It is a combination of magical, mystical and spiritual ideas that are closely interwoven. Buddhists and Hindus share many of the sanctuaries as they are very tolerant and not divided as in other religions. Each year the fascinating Banepa Valley set amid the Himalayas allures thousands of visitors with its impressive mountain landscape, ancient culture and the deep mystical religious faith of its people that is still very much alive today.

Coruña's history centres mainly around its harbour. In ancient times the city was an important seaport and under Roman occupation it was known as Flavium Brigantium. Legend has it that the vivacious Maria Pita revolted against the former pirate Sir Francis Drake and thus assisted in the liberation of the city. The Santiago De Compostela Cathedral is said to be the most outstanding monument in Spain. It covers 23,000 square metres and took more than a hundred years to build. Pontevedra is a city on the mouth of the Rio Lérez. Cobbled pavements lead past splendid Pazos, the residential palaces of the city's old trading families. Two hundred kilometres long, the Galician coast represents thirty per cent of the Spanish coastline. Its strategic location once made Galicia an ideal haunt for smugglers and pirates and its tiny villages give the impression that time has stood still.

GTR-DVD-1015 - REAL ALCÁZAR DE SEVILLA Andalusia, Spain The royal palace of Real Alcázar is located in Seville, the capital of the autonomous Spanish province of Andalusia. Dating back to the 8th century and formerly the oldest citadel built by the Moors, the palace was built on the ruins of a Roman fortress when the Almohaden transformed it into a palace. Following the conquest of the city, the Christian kings and most notably, Don Pedro, employed the best Moorish builders and artists, the Mudejaren. In the Hall of the Envoys the wall tiles contain many Moorish designs and it was here that the country's rulers received envoys from abroad. The furnishings and household goods of the royal private rooms were collected from around most of the known world. The Gala Dining Room is particularly outstanding. It contains precious wall carpets and crystal chandeliers from Murano and a huge table dominates almost the entire length of the room. Moorish arcades lead to the Andalusian Gardens that were planted in place of the original kitchen gardens and many of the courtyards feature a small water fountain that adds to the calm atmosphere. Real Alcázar is the most beautiful example of Mudejar design, a fairy tale from the 'One Thousand And One Nights'!
