VPG-DVD-107 - HAWAII The Hawaiian Islands are located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and form the 50th state of the USA. In the south east of the island of O'Ahu, Honolulu is a modern town and the starting point for most journeys. It also contains the Iolani Palace - once the residence of King David Kalakana - a magnificent Victorian structure in the centre of Honolulu and the only royal palace in the United States. In Pearl Harbour, a museum commemorates the events of the seventh of December 1941 when most of the American Pacific fleet was destroyed by the Japanese. In winter, the world's best surfers collect on Sunset Beach, attracted by spectacular waves, some of which reach as high as the tallest church steeples. On the island of Kaua'i, the Wailua is Hawaii's only navigable river and it flows through some of the exciting locations which were used for Jurassic Park, Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Blue Hawaii. VPG-DVD-217 - WACHAU Our journey across Wachau begins in Stein, a town district of Krems, one of the oldest cultivated landscapes in Austria. Gigantic skyscrapers and with a frenetic lifestyle, Toronto is where many Canadian banks and multi-national companies have their palatial offices of steel and glass built in what was once a waterfront wilderness. The old City Hall was built in 1899 in Victorian style and consists mainly of sandstone. Its Venetian clock tower faces an array of modern skyscrapers and almost opposite is the futuristic looking new City Hall, a symbol of the city's cosmopolitan flair. It's easy to become disorientated in Toronto's Underground City. Most of this subterranean complex extends beneath the financial district and is the largest of its type in the world with countless shops, restaurants and subway stations. An endless network of corridors and passages connects these vast shopping centres and offices to the Central Business District. Since 1975 the city has possessed a unique monument, the Canadian National Tower or, the C.N.Tower. At a speed of six metres a second four external elevators zoom to the top of the building and it takes only fifty-eight seconds to reach the Skypod platform. The massive Skydome stadium is home to the Blue Jays baseball team. The huge pitch contains a hundred and six rolls of light green turf and is illuminated by more than seven hundred two thousand watt spotlights. The building is multi-functional and has a movable dome that can be opened and closed as necessary depending upon the weather. Niagara Falls, although extremely touristy, is an unforgettable experience. For the adventurous there are bridges and platforms close to the raging waters and the roar of the mighty torrent can be heard from a great distance while the awe-inspiring view of the waterfalls make it easy to forget the surrounding hustle and bustle of fellow sightseers. The Indian meeting place of bygone times has been transformed into a huge city that is a true gem among Canada's other great cities. Toronto is without a doubt the most multicultural city in the world!

Gamla Stan, or 'Old Town', is the name of the city's three central islands that are linked by numerous bridges. Its ambience is that of the Middle Ages and small and mysterious alleys and beautiful buildings that date back to the 7th century characterise the life of the traders who once lived there. The old town's most dominant building is the royal castle of Kunglia Slottet. Larger than London's Buckingham Palace it contains six hundred and eight rooms. The Stadshuset is one of the city's landmarks and was designed in Medieval style and with a tower that is almost 106 metres tall. The most important artists of the time were engaged in the creation of the Blue Hall in which the Noble Prize ceremony now takes place each year. Those who appreciate museums will not be disappointed by Stockholm as it boasts more than fifty! The National Museum located on the Strömmen Canal contains countless works of art. Due to the passion for art of various of Sweden's royal family and also generous public donations, the museum has a truly outstanding collection of French paintings that date back to the 18th century. Six kilometres south of Stockholm is a cemetery that has been designated as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, the Skogskyrkogarden, the final resting place for many of Stockholm's past inhabitants and also some of its most famous, including Greta Garbo. This extraordinary complex took thirty years to build and is unique in the world. Since 1998 this centuries-old Hanse city has also been the cultural capital of Europe. This city of the Vikings is a true architectural gem!

VPG-DVD-169 - PROVENCE Marseille is the most important city in Provence.and is situated on the south coast of France. From a distance, one of Marseille's main landmarks rises high above the harbour: the seafarers' church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Garde. With abundant internal furnishings, Byzantine arches, golden mosaics and numerous votives it is a splendid structure inspired by Byzantine Romanic design. The most impressive religious building in Marseille is a fortified monastery church that dates back to the 5th century, the mighty Abbaye Saint Victor. Deep down in the rock is an Early Christian crypt and a number of stone sarcophaguses that contain the remains of various holy martyrs that date back to the Roman persecution of the Christians. A boat trip from Cassis leads to one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe, Les Calanques, a unique nature reserve where shining white limestone cliffs plunge more than four hundred metres into the deep blue sea and extend for twenty kilometres. Sur Le Pont D'Avignon is a world famous French song that is familiar to both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the bridge of the Pont Saint Bénézet but it is more likely that the people here once danced under the bridge, as that is the location of its bars! A place of radiant light and sweet aromas with villages that nestle in the rocks like eagles'nests and with cities that have an historic past. Provence is indeed a captivating land full of fascinating contrasts.

VPG-DVD-163 - MARSEILLE Marseille is the oldest city in France and its largest commercial harbour in the Mediterranean. It is believed that in 600 B.C. travellers from the Greek town of Phokis founded the autonomous town of 'Massalia'. In the Middle Ages the city's main harbour was used by the crusaders to embark on their journey to Jerusalem and it rivalled those of the maritime republics of Genoa, Pisa and Venice. One of Marseille's main landmarks rises high above the harbour, the seafarers' church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Garde. It towers above the city like a fortress and on its bell tower is a gilded ten metre high figure of the Virgin Mary. Several hundred yachts of all sizes crowd into the old harbour where there is often little room for the comings and goings of modern day sailors. It is difficult to imagine that once near-starving slaves were forced to use their last ounce of strength to row their master's galleys into the harbour. Modern harbour complexes require a great deal of space as is well demonstrated by Marseille's new harbour and after Rotterdam it is the second largest in Europe. Two mighty fortresses overlook the harbour: the northern Fort Saint-Jean is the oldest and was used by the Order Of The Knights Of Malta; the Fort Saint Nicolas stands guard over the southern side of the narrow harbour entrance and was built in the 17th century. The tiny island of Chateau D`If was made famous due to a novel by Alexander Dumas, The Count Of Monte Christo. A small museum features many items related to this classic novel and visitors can search for the hole in the wall through which Edmond Dantès is said to have entered the Abbé Faria. A boat trip from Cassis leads to one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe: Les Calanques a unique nature reserve. Shining white limestone cliffs plunge more than four hundred metres into the deep blue sea and extend for twenty kilometres. Marseille - France's wonderful gateway to Africa!

VPG-DVD-201 - MALTA Homer called Malta, 'The Centre Of The Sea'. This island situated in the heart of the Mediterranean and was important to both the orient and the occident. After the Phoenicians and the Punier came the Romans followed by the Arabs and the Normans: but it was the Knights Of Malta who made the most indelible mark here. Valletta is also known as The City Of Palaces and is Malta's main city, full of historic buildings, and in 1530 the Order of the Knights of Malta moved its main residence to this part of the island. The St. John´s Co-Cathedral was built in1577 by Gerolama Cassar as a monastic church of the Order Of The Knights Of Malta and its splendid interior was financed by the profits gained from hostilities mounted by the Order against Muslim trading ships. Mosta is situated in the middle of the island, a busy small town with a famous landmark, Mosta Cathedral, a huge sacred building whose mighty dome can be seen from almost anywhere on the island. The rugged southern coast of Malta contains small fjord-like features and numerous grottos, the most spectacular of which is the Blue Grotto. From the village of Wied-Iz-Zurrieq a steep path leads down to the sea and when the weather is suitable experienced guides take passengers on small boats through a narrow canyon into the grotto where the colour of the water is truly fascinating. One of the prettiest villages on Gozo is Gharb whose Baroque parish church dominates the main square. Here it is as though time really has stood still. With seven thousand years of history Malta is a colourful and beautiful island with tales of the sea and noble knights: a tantalising pearl set in the very heart of the Mediterranean.

VPG-DVD-176 - JAMAICA Montego Bay is Jamaica's second largest city that, at the end of the 18th century, was one of the most important harbours for the island's sugar industry. The lively city centre is a mixture of both old and new with modern concrete houses located next to simple wooden huts and congested streets with numerous small shops and street traders. Close to Falmouth there's the excitement of Martha Brae River Rafting which is an excellent way to explore this tropical paradise in which dense tropical rain forest shows off all its spectacular colours. It was here on the north coast that Christopher Columbus landed in1502 and where the Spanish were defeated by the British in a bloody battle for sovereign control of the island. Dunn`s River Falls is the name of a waterfall near to Ochos Rios, one of the island's most well known natural attractions. In swimming attire, more than a million annual visitors attempt to climb through spraying torrents of water whilst linking hands in a human chain. In foaming cascades, the water plunges 200 metres down toward the sea over step-shaped limestone blocks and across an overgrown landscape of ferns and plants. Harmony Hall, a Victorian building that is a reminder of British colonial rule, is the name of an immaculate manor house located on a turn of the century plantation. Today it contains a handicraft centre and also a gallery that displays the works of indigenous artists. James Bond Beach is the name of the former winter retreat of the English author, Ian Fleming, who created British secret agent, James Bond. The famous author wrote most of his fourteen 007 novels on the small island of Golden Eye, of which five were set in Jamaica. Expansive fields of coconut palms dominate the Sun Valley Plantation which continues a tradition that dates back 250 years. In addition to bananas, citrus fruits, papayas, melons and apples, various spices are also cultivated on the plantation. World famous for their coffee beans, the Blue Mountains represent breathtaking primeval nature with a hint of adventure, a further experience in this sun-scorched island.

With 1.7 million inhabitants Guadalajara is Mexico's second largest city. The Plaza De Amras contains some fine decorative ironwork and a circular stage for music events. The city is home to Mexican rodeos and also the broad-brimmed sombrero. It is also believed to be the birthplace of the world famous mariachi music. After breaking with Spain, Guadalajara became the capital of Jalisco. At the beginning of the 20th century it was the second largest city of the new Republic. The city successfully unites its centuries old history with modern times and today is considered to be a perfect example of both modern and traditional Mexico. The Lago De Chapala is Mexico's largest lake and its three thousand kilometre shoreline is extremely beautiful and boasts several large sandy beaches. Located some sixty kilometres from Guadalajara it is also a natural paradise for a variety of waterfowl. Music can heard throughout Mexico and since the 19th century the country's mariachi bands have performed at festivals, wedding ceremonies and indeed almost anywhere that involves fun and celebration. For four hundred years the people in this 'Land Of Tequila' have existed from the juice of the Blue Agaves. In the past tequila was considered to be nothing more than cheap fire-water but today it has become a popular drink throughout the world. Jalisco is a country bursting with tradition, beauty and, of course, tequila!

Due to its protected location and numerous thermal springs, in 1929 a garden city originated there and within its many greenhouses grow vegetables, fruit and exotic flowers. The small coastal picturesque village of Vik with its few houses and around three hundred inhabitants is located in a valley close to a bay. The mystical looking rocks seem to protect this place that has the most rainfall in what is an already rainy region and above which the rain clouds are often alive with both thunder and lightning. Iceland is a fascinating world of water, fire and ice and full of breathtaking beauty and overwhelming contrast. It is one of the last natural paradises on Earth.

VPG-DVD-171 - BAHAMAS Nassau is the capital of the island of New Providence which is one of the many islands of the Bahaman archipelago that extends for almost a thousand kilometres between Cuba and Florida in the Atlantic Ocean. New Providence is the commercial and political centre and is more commonly known as the Bahamas. Built between 1805 and 1813 in typical American southern style, the pink-coloured buildings of Parliament Square are the headquarters of the Bahamian government. In front of the white columned Neo-Classical parliament building is a noble statue of the English queen, Victoria, as a young girl. The colourful Caribbean Straw Market is a lively place. There are lots of fascinating things to see including skilful craftsmen who carve traditional objects from mahogany. Bags, baskets and hats made of straw are offered as souvenirs. Along the coast there are several caves in which pirates once hid their ill-gotten gains or argued over buried treasure. During the Stone Age the Arawak Indians lived in the caves. Cable Beach boasts a multitude of exquisite modern hotel complexes that cater for every need and several of them possess a casino. Naturally, each has its own lavish bathing areas and a vast choice of exciting entertainment. Thus it's not too difficult to understand why British secret agent 007 often chose these islands for his investigations! The Bahamas: the very name conjures up remote sandy beaches and turquoise blue water, romantic sunsets and tropical nights. A place where fantastic dreams become wonderful reality.

VPG-DVD-223 - AMMAN Amman is an historic metropolis in which ancient times and modern life meet face to face and where poverty and wealth live side by side. At first sight the city's ancient roots are not obvious, however, they date back to Biblical times. Abdoun is one of the city's modern city districts. For many years the city's former suburbs have been integrated into the megalopolis thus they now cover several additional hills. The slopes are crowded with modern, bright terraced houses and villas constructed of limestone and a modern infrastructure connects the residential districts with the old town at the foot of the hills. The King Abdullah Mosque is the largest and, due to its striking blue cupola, the most beautiful mosque in Amman. Although only completed in 1988 it is an important symbol of Islam. In 1900 the Ottoman Sultan ordered the construction of the Hedjaz Railroad that was designed to unite the Ottoman Empire that had begun to disintegrate as well as to transport Moslem pilgrims to Medina in the Hedjaz Mountains. The monarchs who ruled over this land have been many and both earthquakes and fire have devastated its buildings. But Amman has managed to survive and now continues to be a prosperous and vibrant metropolis.
