VPG-DVD-217 - WACHAU Our journey across Wachau begins in Stein, a town district of Krems, one of the oldest cultivated landscapes in Austria. The sole 'Gateway Into The Wachau' is a unique region of the Danube between Krems-Stein and Melk. A total of a hundred and thirteen houses encapsulate the medieval city that was built along the Steiner Road on the banks of the Danube. Today the town's facades and entrance-ways are decorated in traditional style and compliment the impressive Renaissance splendour of the buildings. A little further on and the river valley narrows and becomes even more beautiful. The blue-white church tower of Dürnstein proudly welcomes those who visit the town. It is a landmark of the Wachau. This small medieval town nestles picturesquely along the rock walls above the Danube and it lives and breathes the history that made it world famous. The beauty of the landscape is overwhelming. Colour dominates the soft hollows between the rocky slopes that flank the Danube Valley and the shining green of the summer months leads to a spectacle of colour that leads up to the wine harvest, a true spectacle of nature! Thirty-six kilometres of the Danube Valley with magnificent cities, castles and historic ruins, a Baroque monastery and an old vine-growing culture. The Wachau, a priceless gem situated alongside the far-stretching waters of the Danube.

VPG-DVD-196 - SALZBURG The Austrian city of Salzburg is a city of bishops as well as being the birthplace of world famous classical composer, Amadeus Mozart. The cathedral is located in the heart of the city, a Baroque building situated on the same site as the city's first church and now surrounded by several squares. Even today the cultural picture of the city on the Salzach is dominated by more than a hundred churches, castles and palaces. Hohensalzburg is the largest fully-preserved medieval fortress in Middle Europe. It is located one hundred and nineteen metres above the city and covers over thirty thousand square metres. It is like a small medieval town within itself with several buildings, courtyards and squares. Bastions with mighty towers were built at strategic points and together with powerful gates they make the fortress near impregnable. It is believed that during a siege the famous Salzburg Bull tricked the city's attackers into believing that the population had a good stock of food! Medieval Salzburg became a 'German Rome', an Italian looking city of Early Baroque design. The Getreide-Gasse is the main street in the centre of the city and in former times was called, Trabe-Gasse, a name that demonstrates the fact that the people there were always in a hurry! The city is a work of art within itself, an historic treasure chest of timeless beauty, full of southern flair and joie de vivre. Salzburg is most definitely a Baroque gem located in the very heart of Europe.

VPG-DVD-186 - GOLFE DU MORBIHAN The Golfe Du Morbihan is situated on the south coast of Brittany and protects the region from the strong currents of the Atlantic Ocean. It is a fascinating coastal landscape with huge castles and extensive sand dunes. Influential and wealthy ship owners once settled here: they ran the East India Trading Company that earned high taxes for the French monarchy. The present day harbour makes it difficult to believe that it was once a busy centre of trade with the distant Orient but the town's well preserved buildings indicate its former wealth and ferryboats travel to the village on the opposite side of the Lorient that still boasts a splendid array of huge warehouses. The Megaliths Of Carnac are stone relics that are thousands of years old and date back to the middle of the Neolithic Period and although they have been analysed by scientists they are nonetheless full of mystique as four long avenues of mighty stone known as 'Alignments'extend across eight kilometres of scenic terrain. The enchanting medieval city of Auray is situated on a bend of the Rivière D`Auray that flows into the Golfe Du Morbihan. The city has earned its place in the history books of Brittany. Here, two families once fought to rule this land and a battle decided which one! The attractive charm of the Brittany landscape owes much of its allure to its picturesque old stone houses and idyllic bays. The Golfe Du Morbihan with its numerous islands both large and small is a French paradise set along the rugged Atlantic coast.

VPG-DVD-207 - CARINTHIA Carinthia is Austria's southernmost region and borders both Italy and Slovenia. It is located in the sunny heart of Europe with more than a thousand lakes plus spectacular alpine regions and numerous Celtic Roman excavation sites, medieval castles, monasteries and cathedrals. In the eastern part of Carinthia and more than a thousand metres above sea level is one of the region's oldest historical villages, the mountain village of Diex. In the fifteenth century the Turks invaded the area with great savagery thus, as protection, local farmers built castellated churches in which they sought sanctuary. Friesach, Carinthia's oldest city, has retained what must be the true ambience of the Middle Ages, with a fortified princely estate and churches and monasteries that are surrounded by sturdy walls and a moat. The Maria Saal Open Air Museum is situated in the heart of Carinthia. In this richly cultural and historic area various traditional farm buildings from all over Carinthia have been reconstructed. Klagenfurt is the administrative centre of Carinthia: a middle class garden city that does not contain the fine buildings of the aristocracy but has a good helping of southern flair and, due to the nearby Wörthersee, is a marvellous summer resort. The Grossglockner High Alps road travels through one of the greatest natural landscapes in the world, the Hohe Tauern National Park, a remarkable mountain world in which nature is at its most glorious.

VPG-DVD-193 - BRETAGNE Brittany in the rugged west of France features picturesque old towns, castles and fortresses plus austere medieval cathedrals. Nostalgia and romantic harbour villages still exist here and it is also a land of menhirs and fishermen. Rennes is the capital of the region and it is here that our journey through Brittany begins. It is a small town in which both medieval and classical buildings stand side by side. In 1720 a disastrous fire that raged for seven days destroyed a number of historic houses. Several crooked, partly renovated frame-work houses are situated in the alleys of the old town, their carved windows and oriels create a medieval atmosphere. Thirty two kilometres south is Vitré, a picture postcard town with a city wall, narrow lanes and a castle. English troops besieged the town for many years until the lords of the castle finally paid a large ransom for their freedom. Le Mont Saint Michel with its historic buildings is located on an eighty metre high granite mound and is like something from a fairytale. Powerful fortifications surround the small town and the abbey at the top of the rock. Due to its unique location and architectural splendour this picturesque village is often referred to as the Wonder Of The Occident. Dinan is a small enchanting French town on the banks of the Rance is one of the most beautiful and well preserved mediaeval towns in Brittany. The western part of France has many faces and Brittany truly is a land of myths, castles, fishing villages and historic old towns.

VPG-DVD-118 - ALGARVE Al-Gharb - The Land In The West! Because it formed part of their realm, the southernmost province of Portugal was thus named by the Arabs who occupied it and everywhere there are castles which the Christian kings built during the Moorish Wars. Tavira had numerous rulers, among them Romans and Greeks who established a trading centre. Unobtrusive elegance is an indication of the prosperity of bygone times and due to the city's thirty well-preserved churches it is referred to as The City Of Churches. Olhao is a busy fishing port, the tiled benches on its shoreline offering a relaxed view of the day's activities. Its fishermen are said to be the most courageous in the region and in 1808 some of them crossed the Atlantic in a small boat until they reached Rio de Janeiro. Faro is the capital of the Algarve, the heritage of numerous cultures that possesses its own unique atmosphere. Near to the Baroque cathedral, the attractive centre of the old town has been well preserved and demonstrates Faro's historic and dazzling past. Portimao not only boasts a fishing port but also one of the Algarve's most beautiful beaches. When the Carthaginians came here from the Mediterranean they built a harbour for their ships, the Portus Hannibalis. The sleepy small town of Silves, formerly known as Xelb, was once the splendid capital of the Moorish Al-Gharb. The castle area is a reminder of its former Arab occupation and Christian Crusades. From the huge red sandstone Moorish castle there's a breathtaking view across the green hills of the surrounding landscape. Three hundred days of sunshine each year, a breathtakingly beautiful landscape, isolated bays with red rocks, golden sandy beaches and crystal blue sea, picturesque villages and castles with a fascinating history. That is the Algarve!

OTT-DVD-141 - The journey to the desert castles of the Omaijades begins south of the Jordanian capital of Amman close to the Queen Alia Airport. The winter residence of Qasr Mushatta is no more. In spite of its poor condition this desert castle is exceptional among the former residences of the Omayyad monarchy as according to the wishes of Kalif Walid The Second the Qasr Mushatta was meant to outshine all other palaces in respect of both size and splendour. On the southern Azraq Amman Road is the impressive Qasr El-Kharaneh, the most well-preserved desert castle in Jordan. Some of its architectural features such as the Mesopotamian walls and decorative elements of the upper section indicate Persian influence. Azraq is located a hundred kilometres east of Amman on the edge of a sandy desert. Even today the Qasr Al Azraq Castle impresses with its dark basalt stone. It is more like a fortress than a noble residence and is believed to date back to Roman times and Emperor Septimius Severus. Entrance to the Qasr Al-Hallabat Mosque was highly restricted and only the caliph and members of his court were allowed to enter. Nevertheless, the Omayyad monarchs were not as religious as they made out. In fact the opposite was true as their desert castles often featured wild festivities! Any journey to the ancient and mysterious Ommayad kingdom with its fairy-tale castles and ancient bathing houses is an unforgettable and atmospheric adventure.

GTR-DVD-1259 - The Jordan Desert contains several mysterious ruins including the legendary remains of the ancient castles of the Umayyad Monarchy. Qasr Al Mushatta is the largest of the Umayyad castles although it gradually fell into ruins and much of it was used elsewhere as building material. No other desert castle was built with such megalomania and it was designed as the winter palace of Caliph Walid The Second. Paved roads have now replaced the former caravan routes. Close to the southern Azraq Amman Road is the quadrate castle of Qasr El Kharaneh. This fortress like building is one of the most well preserved desert castles of the Umayyad and its massive external walls and corner towers give it an awesome appearance. The small bathing castle of Qusair Amra is one of the most beautiful castles in Jordan. Its bathing house uniquely highlights the abundant luxury enjoyed by the former monarchs of the desert. The castle features a number of magnificent and well known wall paintings that depict various bathing and hunting scenes. Today the happy-go-lucky nature of the Umayyad monarchy seems to be far removed from Islam. Indeed, some of the scenes are of a sensual nature. The castles of the Umayyad desert: history, atmosphere and romance!
