VPG-DVD-147 - SHANGHAI Shanghai is a gigantic city that is a meeting point of both east and west. The shoreline is without a doubt the city's main focal point. The city is a combination of the past, present and future and contains the historic monuments and eye-catching buildings of a great metropolis. It was once referred to as 'the whore of Asia': capital of crime, the Paris of the east and the centre of Maoism. But today the city is ruled by modern-thinkin communists and the Yangzi Delta is not only China's largest port but also its new shining star of capitalism. The Oriental Pearl Tower is a mighty four hundred and sixty-eight metre high television tower that contains an entertainment centre, futuristic luxury hotel, fine restaurant and offers the most superb views across the city. In the centre of the city's labyrinth-like shopping alleys a zigzag bridge extends across a small pond to a famous tea house. The bridge was designed thus in order to fend off evil spirits who, it was believed, could walk only in a straight line! Located in the countryside, Suzhou is above all famous for its gardens. The 'Garden Of The Policy Of The Common People' is one of China's four most famous gardens. The complex was built between 1522 and 1566 at the command of an important mandarin and designed according to his wishes. South of Suzhou is Zhou Zhuang that is said to have been the first water village in China. A journey on its canals is certainly worthwhile as the surrounding area is covered with thousands of canals and rivers and many villages in the area are only accessible by boat. Shanghai and its surrounding area has now freed itself from its early growing pains and from the restrictions imposed by Chairman Mao and today enjoys the rich rewards of capitalism.

SMP-DVD-23800 - Oregon Covered BridgesJoin us on a journey through some of Oregon 's longest standing historical landmarks. At one time Oregonhad more than 400 covered bridges. Today only a little more than 50 remain. The covered bridge blended well into the early economy of the Oregon countryside. The material for construction was close at hand, and the prevailing pioneer spirit was equal to the problems it presented. It was well known that wood, protected from the elements, would last considerably longer than that which was left in the open. The housing provides protection for the most expensive parts, like the truss, in order to make the structure last longer. Today, the pioneer spirit shows once again as individuals, local and state organizations as well as government agencies strive to protect and restore Oregon's covered bridges.

OTT-DVD-123 - The Shan State Express is the sonorous name of a unique train that travels to the north of Myanmar and to the legendary kingdom of the Shan. It passes through some of the most splendid scenery in South East Asia. We begin in the famous city of Mandalay that has a population of around a million and is a centre of Burmese art. Mandalay was founded around one hundred and fifty years ago and is therefore a relatively young metropolis. It owes its existence to an outstanding monarch, King Mindon who, wishing to escape from his kingdom's turbulent past, had a brand new royal city built. The journey on the Shan State Express begins early in the morning in Mandalay Train Station. Immediately after leaving the city we encounter wonderful scenery that is strongly influenced by a remarkable backdrop of mountains and unspoiled Nature. The railroad travels in a zigzag up the mountains which enables it to negotiate severe slopes that would otherwise be impossible for it to climb vertically. With the arrival of the railroad an increasing number of small farming villages developed most of which were populated by the Shan. Accounting for around eight point five per cent of the total population, the Shan are the largest ethnic minority in Myanmar. Their culture has been a major contribution to the historical development of South East Asia. At numerous railway stations Westerners are sometimes a little wary of the various snacks on offer. When a tempting skewer of food suddenly turns out to be a grilled locust the appetite can sometimes disappear within seconds! The continuing journey on the Shan State Express travels once more into the countryside. Picturesque hills line the route that is close to a famous militarily name, the Burma Road. The Shan State is truly one of the most colourful areas in South East Asia. Due to the extended train route from Mandalay to Lashio the time is hopefully not far away when the poverty of this region will be replaced by a new era of well deserved prosperity.

NPM-DVD-123 - Nature Parks CAMARGUE Provence, FranceNowhere else are both countryside and waterscapes more attractive. In France, amongst the spacious tributaries of the Rhone is the romantic region of the Camargue. Once considered as hostile terrain, today this swampy area is becoming increasingly popular, which is not surprising with the large variety of impressive locations that this fascinating region has to offer and the region's traditional white horses that are famous throughout the world. Bright fields of sunflowers are everywhere yet the Camargue is more well known for its cultivation of rice. In the high season of the summer months, of which the inhabitants of the small town of Saintes-Maries-De-La-Mer numbers around a thousand, the population increases ten fold. The fortified exterior of the pilgrimage church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Mer that was built on the site of an early Christian chapel is a reminder of this region's dramatic past. Legend has it that its beach was the starting point for the subsequent spread of Christianity in Provence. In addition to its significance as a place of pilgrimage, life in the village centres around the Camargue bulls and it even contains a bullring! Just as with Provence the beauty of the Camargue has attracted numerous famous painters and artists who were inspired by the wild tranquillity of this area and the landscape itself is like a painting when suddenly a collection of water lilies can bring to mind a famous impressionistic painting by Monet. The region's outstandingly beautiful and harmonious combination of water, air and earth is unique in Europe. The French poet, Daudet, was absolutely right when he described the Camargue as the 'most beautiful swamp in the world!'

NPM-DVD-106 - Nature Parks ACADIA New EnglandThe Acadia National Park is located in the North Eastern region of Maine in the United States and measures 142 square kilometres The close proximity of the North Atlantic Ocean to the coastal forest landscape is one of the park's irresistible attractions. During fall, the season in which New England is at its most magnificent, the forests come alive with soft, warm colours and the entire landscape becomes transformed by this 'fifth season' of the year. Thunder Hole is a further attraction. Onlookers seem almost awe struck when witnessing the relentless might of the Atlantic and the unexpected sound of thunder that emanates from a small cave within the granite cliffs caused by the sea as it floods into the air-filled cave thus releasing the air pressure from within with fantastic, thunderous effect. Loop Road is a scenic route that travels from coast to countryside and passes a picturesque and charming semi-timbered house, the Jordan Pond Gate House, built by John D. Rockefeller in1932. Created from a glacier, Jordan Pond is relatively deep and at its northern end there are two round hills, the 'Bubbles' from the summit of which the vast landscape of the glowing forest below is even more impressive. Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the North Atlantic coast. The scant vegetation of this area is quite surprising especially as it is in such close proximity to the nearby forests. During September, when the first so-called 'leaf reports' are announced in the newspapers and on television, there's an air of excitement. The beginning of the Indian Summer is the time of the 'Leaf Peepers.' Whether they travel to the park by car, foot, horse and carriage or by way of a rented mountain bike, visitors to Acadia's beautiful forests have a wide selection of leaves from which to choose. During fall, the red and orange of the maple trees and the golden yellow hues of aspen and birch melt together in a breathtaking carpet of colour that seems to cover the entire country. Acadia is a veritable arcadia!

GTR-DVD-1042 - A mighty wall surrounds the Medina, the old part of the Tunisian city of Sousse, whose fortifications date back to the 9th century. They were built by the Aghlabides who were strongly influenced by Islam. There is a remarkable gate at the northern edge of the Medina. It is the entrance to the Ribat, an impressive fortress that was built by the Aghlabides in the 10th century. This military building was very similar to a monastery in which Islamic interests dominated the actions of the Ribat's „Warrior Monks." The history of Sousse has been influenced by many different countries and cultures. Carthagian, Roman and even Byzantine influences can be found in the city. Its convenient location, coastline and fertile countryside created a prosperous trading and commercial centre, making Sousse the main metropolis of the Sahel. Stretching out onto the highest point of the Medina is the impressive fortress, the Kasbah, that was built on the foundations of a Byzantine castle and today contains an important museum. Thanks to its special location, Sousse has always fascinated visitors with its rich variety of atmospheric, historical impressions. Thankfully, and despite its warlike past, the Medina of Sousse has been able to preserve most of its original character. GTR-DVD-1047 - In the midst of the wooded hills of Oltenia´s Carpathian countryside is the Horezu Monastery that was donated by Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu. The building was constructed in 1690 to defend the western region of the country and the settlement comprises five churches, a sanctuary for the infirm and various monks' cells.Sculptures of stone and floral motifs decorate the external walls of the monastery´s main church. Its wall paintings were created by twelve artists under the direction of Masters Constantinos and Ioan between 1692 and 1702 and represent the beginning of the Brâncoveanu Style. The library, the Princes´ House that today contains the monastery's art collection, the Refectorium with its old paintings, and finally the Treasury that contains icons and precious silver objects that date back to the Brâncoveanu period, are each extremely valuable. The Brâncoveanu style first gained recognition as early as the 18th century. It soon spread throughout Walachia and Transylvania. Thanks to the refined art of this time, the Horezu Monastery has been designated as a World Heritage Site by Unesco. GTR-DVD-1096 - Hallstatt is located on the shores of a sleepy Austrian lake, surrounded by high hills and the Dachstein Mountain Range. Similar to a fjord, Hallstatt Lake extends in front of the picturesque village that was one of the earliest and most unique settlements in this region. Due to the early discovery of large salt deposits in the surrounding mountains, the village has a proud history that dates back a thousand years and archaeology has revealed that this area was inhabited from around five thousand years B.C. Long before Christianity came to Salzkammergut and prior to any churches being built, an independent prehistoric culture evolved. The village contains a rich variety of historic buildings and its churches contain precious works of art such as a Late Gothic altar created by Leonhard Astl. The old marketplace and fountain is crowned by a trinity column that dates back to 1744. The welcoming facades of the dwellings have graced this atmospheric village since the 16th century and the market probably dates back to the 14th century. In 1891 Lake Street played a vital role for the village's busy commercial traffic and the impressive Countryside and Pre-History Museum displays the history of salt mining in the area and its importance to the village. In 1846 the Salinen civil servant, Johann Georg Ramsauer, made a sensational discovery when he discovered a prehistoric burial ground in the village. During seventeen years of excavation a total of twenty thousand objects were discovered in nine hundred and eighty graves. These discoveries subsequently led to the establishment of Hallstatt's intriguing and fascinating culture.
