OTT-DVD-131 - The Dingle Peninsula in the southwest of Ireland is well known as one of the country's most scenic locations. It is also a region with a fascinating history and the origin of its villages and farms date back to Early Christian and even prehistoric times. The fifteen hundred inhabitants of tiny Dingle Town have for generations been closely associated with the sea. Although today's fishing industry is not what it once was, the fishing harbour still plays a vital role in the lives of the local people. Due to tourism the pubs of Dingle Town are kept well busy, however, compared with other parts of Ireland tourism here is a far more subdued affair. In Dingle Town in 1984 a dolphin appeared just off the coast and it accompanied the fishing boats into the harbour and indeed it still does and the Dingle Dolphin is now a well known attraction on this part of the coast. The Dunbeg Fort originated in the Bronze Age. Archaeology has shown that it dates back to the eighth century B.C. The magnificent location of the fortress hundreds of metres above the thundering sea and mighty cliffs make the visit to Dunbeg Fort a dramatic adventure. Close to Fahan is a large group of Beehive Huts, ancient circular buildings that date back to the Last Ice Age. According to archaeologists further buildings were erected in early Christian times. Its mysterious prehistoric and early Christian monuments as well as the beauty of its landscape have given the Dingle Peninsula the magic that has rightly made The Emerald Isle famous throughout the world!

NPM-DVD-114 - Nature Parks ROYAL CHITWAN PARK NepalOn the Indian border in the south of Nepal is the country's oldest animal reserve, the Royal Chitwan Park. Along with the extremely rare Indian rhinoceros around four hundred animals live within the confines of this fascinating nature reserve. One of the park's fertile valleys is crossed by the rivers Rapti, Reu and Narayani. Due to the monsoons the rivers frequently change course and constantly transform the appearance of the landscape. The rivers are home to a large assortment of fish. Even the rare Ganges Dolphin that is threatened by extinction has found sanctuary in their waters. An area of 932 km² is encircled by the impressive profile of the mighty and majestic Himalayan Mountains and in 1973 the Royal Chitwan was officially designated as a national park. Today it is one of the country's most important tourist destinations. More than seventy per cent of the park is covered by forests of Sal trees, the remainder being divided between river valley woodland and tall elephant grass. With its 800 metre high hills, the park accommodates more than forty species of mammals, around five hundred and fifty varieties of birds and seventy species of butterflies. The subtropical climate also supports the growth of numerous exotic plants, the magnificent blossoms of which are often obscured by dense undergrowth. The name 'Chitwan' means 'Heart Of The Jungle', a name that could not better describe the large variety of fauna and flora to be found in the park. A slow drive on bumpy, natural roads travels past the tall trees of the jungle. From the top of the trees there is the screaming of monkeys as well as a confusing cacophony of birdcall. The park is a paradise for birds and among the four hundred and fifty species that live here there are rare hornbills, cranes, peacocks and birds of prey such as falcons, hawks and white-tailed eagles. The Royal Chitwan was once the hunting ground of kings and noblemen. Today it is the most treasured nature reserve in Asia and a final refuge for numerous animals threatened by extinction.

GTR-DVD-1120 - During ancient times the Cyclades island of Delos was the flourishing centre of Greek culture. Greece's most extensive archaeological site covers the entire island and since 1872 has been frequented by countless archaeologists. Greek legend has it that this now-deserted island was the birthplace of the gods Apollo and Artemis. Offering wonderful ocean views, the amphitheatre dates back to the third century B.C. and accommodated around 5500 spectators. Not all of the island's temples were dedicated to Greek gods and a particularly well-preserved sanctuary of the so-called 'foreign gods' formed part of a beautiful temple that was dedicated to the Egyptian goddess, Isis. The lower plateaus on the western side of Kithos Hill contain numerous important cult sites. One of these sanctuaries was the centre of the Hera Cult, the Archaic Heraion, that established itself in 500 B.C. Beautifully restored mosaics with the Phoenician symbol of the goddess Tanith decorate one of the most impressively furnished houses on the island, the House Of Dolphins. The island's ruins indicate its former cosmopolitan nature with its Egyptian, Italian, Phoenician and Jewish traders but due to the destruction of its buildings and the creation of new centres of trade elsewhere, Delos gradually became deserted.
