VPG-DVD-155 - CAPE TOWN Located on the southern edge of Africa and lying at the foot of Table Mountain, the metropolis of Cape Town is certainly one of the world's most beautiful cities, an exciting combination of Africa, Europe and the Caribbean. In the park-lined Government Avenue and Queen Victoria Street there's a wonderful collection of well-restored Victorian houses and the Anglican St.Georges Cathedral is where Archbishop Desmond Tutu protested against Apartheid. Part of the historic harbour is the Victoria And Alfred Waterfront. In 1860, Prince Alfred ordered construction of a new harbour basin, followed by the Victoria Basin that contained two watchtowers. Today, the whole of the old port is an internationally-styled entertainment and shopping complex. The two large water tanks in the harbour's Two Ocean Aquarium contain around 3,000 examples of sea life from the Indian and Atlantic oceans. In the adjoining South African Maritime Museum there are examples of the city's historic ships, its fishing industry and details on the construction of its outstanding harbour. Robben Island is situated 11 km. off the coast and in the 16th century the Dutch used it as a prison. During apartheid, political prisoners were incarcerated there, the prison's most famous inmate having been Nelson Mandela who spent 18 years of his 28 year sentence on the island. After the closure of the prison, in 1997 the South African government opened both the island and its former prison to the public. Thus the face of Robben Island changed from being a place of terror and suppression to one of pilgrimage, a symbol of resistance and also a major tourist attraction! The Cape Of Good Hope is the southernmost tip of Africa and since1936 this section of the Cape Peninsula has been a nature reserve. Cape Town and its environs are completely different to the normal expectations of Africa. No desolate bush land reaching to the horizon and no life-threatening wild animals. But it's certainly another remarkable and beautiful dimension to South Africa's magnificent Garden Of Eden!

GTR-DVD-1224 - Located close to the coast, the former Taiwanese capital of Tainan is both historically and culturally one of the country's most fascinating cities. Fort Provintia dates back to the time when the Dutch ruled the city. In the 17th century the fort was located on the waterfront and in those days passing ships were strictly observed. The Kuang Kung Temple is the tallest 'war-god-temple' in Taiwan. The present buildings were built at the beginning of the 18th century although the foundations were built much earlier. Tainan also contains the oldest Confucian temple on the island. The sanctuary and its adjoining school were founded in 1665 and were gradually extended. The majority of the buildings date back to 1715 when the temple site, built according to unique Ming design, was further developed. The fascinating cultural heritage of the historic city of Tainan is still very much alive today in its numerous temples, ancient monuments and magnificent works of art. GTR-DVD-1106 - Where the waters of the Ijsel Sea once flowed is today the vast, flat land of the youngest Dutch province of Flevoland. Only a few kilometres east of Ens, the small village of Schokland emerges from the landscape. This region is an extraordinary example of the historical reclamation of the land from the sea and Schokland is a symbol of the past struggles of its people to reclaim and protect their land from the power of Nature. Even the ancient Romans reported the rising sea levels of this area that caused severe flooding of the land. Following several disastrous floods, in 1859 the last remaining villages were evacuated by Royal Decree. Thus the inhabitants of this small island of fishermen were forced to leave their homes but, due to the modern construction methods of the 20th century, the area around Schokland was reclaimed from the sea and once again made habitable. The architecture of Schokland's old Waterstaats Church was influenced by Calvinism and today it is a museum. Close by, on the former island of Urk, strict Calvinistic customs are still observed and on Sundays some of the village's inhabitants still wear traditional costume. In 1986, Flevoland became the Netherlands'12th and youngest province. The reclaiming of the Zuiderzee created more than 165,000 hectares of new land and due to its long fought though successful struggle with the sea, Schokland can once more be approached from all sides! GTR-DVD-1059 - A boat leaves the South African city of Capetown and heads for Robben Island which lies just 11 km. off the coast. In the 16th century, the Dutch used the island as a prison but only the remains of later buildings survived. During apartheid, political prisoners were incarcerated there, the prison's most famous inmate having been Nelson Mandela who spent 18 years of his 28 year sentence on the island. He secretly wrote the first part of his memoirs there as well as numerous love letters to his former wife. The island's museum is full of fascinating information about the prison, its former conditions and the everyday life of its inmates. Up until the 1970's the prison didn't possess a dining hall or any modern sanitation. In the course of time, conditions slowly improved even though contact with the outside world was prohibited. Visitors, and even radio news broadcasts, were prohibited. After the closure of the prison, in 1997 the South African government opened both the island and its former prison to the public. Thus the face of Robben Island changed from being a place of terror and suppression to one of pilgrimage, a symbol of resistance and also a major tourist attraction! GTR-DVD-1090 - The Peter And Paul Fortress is the historic centre of the tsar's city of St. Petersburg and is located on Rabbits Island within the mouth of the Newa River. Its slender, gilded bell tower is 122 high and is one of the city's most dominant landmarks. The cathedral was built between 1712 and 1733 and contains both Dutch and Early Baroque building styles. Since Peter The Great the building was used mainly as a place of burial for the tsars and the Tsarina Catharine The Great lies within a sarcophagus of white Carrara marble. Numerous wall paintings and captured flags from the wars against the Swedes and the Osmanic Empire still decorate the splendid interior of the cathedral. In front of the main guard house there is a controversial bronze sculpture by the Russian, Michail Schemjakin, that depicts Peter The Great with a strikingly small head. The Peter And Paul Fortress never saw battle and was later converted into a state prison. The participants of the December Revolt which took place in 1825 were also imprisoned within its walls and until the October Revolution in 1917 the fortress also served as a notorious prison for the enemies and critics of the tsars. During the Revolution, the canons of the fortress fired forty shots at the Winter Palace that is located on the opposite bank of the Newa. Today, the thunder of canon is a daily event and punctually at noon a shot is fired from the Naryschkin Bastion. With this simple ceremony due homage is paid to an age old tradition of Peter The Great as it was in this way that he announced lunchtime for all the inhabitants of the city! GTR-DVD-1187 - Twenty kilometres east of the large Dutch port of Rotterdam is an exceptional and captivating landscape of windmills, Kinderdijk. For many centuries the windmills played an important role in the drainage and subsequent reclamation of land in the Netherlands. Up until the 19th century there were more than ten thousand windmills in Holland and even though only a fraction of them still exist they are still an important resource. The nineteen windmills in the Kinderdijk area were built in the 18th century along the waterways of Lek and Noord. In the past the sails of the redundant windmills were used as a means of communication: the position of the sails indicated if there was reason to celebrate or to grieve or if the operators of the mill had taken a short break. The traditions of the Dutch windmill are still kept very much alive by several millers keen to continue the rich heritage created by previous generations. GTR-DVD-1040 - Around 3,500 kilometres west of the mainland of Chile is the Pacific island of Rapa Nui, otherwise known as Easter Island. Three million years ago volcanic activity created this small island of lava that covers an area of a hundred and sixty square kilometres.Rapa Nui is one of the most remote places on Earth and its closest neighbour is Pitcairn Island more than two thousand kilometres west. Since its discovery by Dutch sailors on Easter Sunday, 1722, there has been a great deal of interest in the island. In spite of its growing tourist trade the island has retained an air of tranquillity and is ideal for nature lovers and those interested in its history. Theories abound as to who were the first settlers to arrive on this tiny island but scientists believe that its first inhabitants originated from Eastern Polynesia. But the island's main focal point are its gigantic and mysterious stone monuments that date back to late pre-historic times. These mighty statues have always stimulated a certain amount of fantasy as the island was thought to be part of a lost continent. Nearly all the mighty figures, known as Moai, originated from the slopes of the Rano Raraku Volcano. Its Tuff stone was an ideal sculpting material and its soft texture made it possible for the islanders to create tall, massive statues out of the rock within only a few weeks. There are still almost four hundred individually crafted Moai figures on the island. During the 19th century slave traders arrived and took with them thousands of the island's inhabitants. Those that were left of the island's religious leaders took their knowledge of the island and its culture to their graves. Thus the exact meaning of the intriguing, giant Megalithic sculptures will remain an unsolved mystery for the rest of time. GTR-DVD-1036 - Drottningholm Castle is located on "Queen's Island" in the Mälarsea, twelve kilometres from Stockholm. Of Franco-Dutch design, construction of this regal residence began in 1662 and the castle is now the residence of the Swedish royal family.Lively influences that date back to the Baroque and Rococo periods are part of the characteristic features of the spacious park that surrounds the castle. A number of the sculptures and works of art that feature in the garden were captured in various military campaigns. The cultural elements of various epochs are also reflected in the general layout of the park that is often referred to as the Swedish Versailles. Drottningholm Castle has managed to retain the regal atmosphere of the Swedish royal families just as it was during the 18th century. GTR-DVD-1209 - Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is rich in tradition and a cultural metropolis open to the world and thus justifiably one of the most popular travel destinations in Northern Europe. Many of the city's royal residences such as Christiansborg Slot on Slotsholmen Island attract huge numbers of visitors. A castle was built there in the 12th century by the founder of the city, Bishop Absalon. However, over the course of time the castle began to decay until it was finally pulled down in 1369 in order to make room for a new castle. Royal guards highlight the significance of Amalienborg that is situated in the heart of Frederikstaden, the winter residence of the Danish royal family. Each day at noon an impressive spectacle takes place in front of the palace when the royal guards march into the square and undertake the official changing of the guard. The wonderfully designed royal gardens of Rosenberg Castle, Kongens Have, is one of the most beautiful parks in Denmark. Built on red bricks and covered with a façade of sandstone the castle is an architectural masterpiece of Dutch Renaissance. The city's castles not only reflect the history of the Danish royal family but also trace the colourful development of the fascinating city of Copenhagen. GTR-DVD-1142 - A beautiful fountain with an Egyptian obelisk graces the Place De La République in the heart of Arles, an historic and charming small town in the south of France. Next to the City Hall is the Romanic Saint Trophime Cathedral with its splendid church porch that dates back to the 12th century. The town's Amphitheatre is the region's greatest building that has survived from the time of the Roman Empire and it is also the most important arena in the former Gallic colony. Three watchtowers that date back to the Middle Ages were left in tact by archaeologists as a reminder of the fortifications of the beautiful amphitheatre. Arles and its magnificent cathedral soon became one of the Romans' most favoured towns and was referred to as 'Little Rome in Gaul' when more than twenty thousand spectators witnessed savage gladiatorial battle in its Amphiteatre. Today Arles is closely associated with the name of world famous Dutch painter, Vincent Van Gogh. He completed around four hundred paintings in the town. A visit to Arles is like travelling back in time but with all the unique atmosphere of the present. 7DY-DVD-150 - The European kingdom of Holland, known also as the Netherlands, was until relatively recently a powerful trading nation that possessed many colonies. Most of this land of tulips, windmills and canals is located below sea level and in the 17th century was the most prosperous country in Europe. Amsterdam is Holland`s splendid metropolis, a city of canals and gables where almost anything is permitted as long as it does no harm. Today the view across the main square and royal castle gives little hint that the city is supported by stakes and is the largest lakeland village in the world. In a huge open-air area between Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport, every ten years an international exhibition of garden architecture is held, the Floriade. It features hundreds of blossoming show gardens that are admired by millions of visitors from all over the world. In the 16th century life on the ocean wave brought glorious times for the city of Edam that is now world famous for its cheese of the same name. More than thirty shipyards once prospered in the city and the fleet of legendary Dutch hero, Michiel De Ruyter, was built there. Mijmegen lies proudly on the banks of the River Waal. The origins of Holland's oldest city are to be found in the Roman settlement of Noviomagum. The triangular market square of this university and Hanseatic town is dominated by the Waag House, a red-bricked building of Renaissance design. The Molens Van Kinderdijk is a fascinating landscape of windmills and a Unesco World Heritage Sight. Its nineteen windmills are world famous and of course typical of Holland. The fascination of old cities, dreamy fairytale-like villages, paintings by some of the world's greatest artists, bicycles and windmill: Holland is very much a land of the familiar and also the exotic.
