VPG-DVD-174 - NAIROBI Nairobi is Kenya's busy, expensive yet dangerous capital city, but it is also both fascinating and modern. Nairobi is the country's most important and beautiful city and, with the finest temperate climate between Johannesburg and Cairo, is located at an altitude of almost seventeen hundred metres above sea level. The government district of City Square contains the Conference Centre and the Kanu Tower, the headquarters of government and the city's tallest building. Canon guard the main entrance to the National Museum that is situated on Museum Hill. A fascinating building that covers much of Kenya's culture and history. The museum provides an interesting insight into Pre-history as well as to various cultures and the country's flora and fauna. Directly in front of the city gates is the Nairobi National Park, the oldest of all Kenya's nature parks. Groups of ostriches can be seen bathing in the hot sand and a number of springboks stroll around elegantly between scattered rocks and trees that have been uprooted by elephants as zebra pasture close to the city's skyline. Nairobi is a metropolis in the 'Realm Of The Golden Sun' and is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating cities in the world.

VPG-DVD-160 - BHAKTAPUR Bhaktapur, also known as 'the city of the pious' is the third of the ancient royal cities in the thirty kilometre long Kathmandu Valley in the Kingdom of Nepal and also a Unesco World Heritage Sight. On both sides of Durbar Square are many precious art treasures but the city is also fully-functional and a 'car free' open air museum! The medieval city derived from a fortress complex and was later transformed into a palace area. At the western end of Durbar Square is Dvarikanath Mandir, a replica of the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu. Today a huge pair of lions flank the entrance to the National Art Gallery and there are images of Hanuman and Narasimha. Vatsala Devi Mandir is a temple with a square, three-tiered base. This sacred building has a corridor set around a central Shikhara tower and its stairway is flanked by elephants and two fantastic horses. The number of the city's small temples, shrines and dwellings of the gods is many and complex and they can be found at each crossroads and in every courtyard and doorway. Bhaktapur has also been immortalized in the movie, Little Buddha. For those interested in culture the Kingdom of Nepal is a dream destination and Bhaktapur is a truly atmospheric journey into a rich and golden past.

TMT-DVD-123 - LEPTIS MAGNA Northern Libya was once where the dramatic history Leptis Magna was created, an ancient metropolis that was the first and thus the oldest Phoenician settlement that formed part of what was later known as Tripolitania. The remains of this city are typically Roman. The second century A.D. brought new prosperity when Septimius Severus, who was born in Leptis Magna, became emperor of the Imperium Romanum. At that time monumental buildings were constructed whose beauty and size was only surpassed by those in Rome itself. The ruins of the very large Severian Basilica highlight the amazing architectural skills of the master builders of those days. The Forum was also built at the time of Septimius Severus and today it is the most imposing area in the ancient city. Artistic Medusa and Gorgon heads adorn the remains of a restored arcade in the Forum.. The city's Amphitheatre that was once the scene of bloody gladiatorial battles and wildlife savagery, also possesses its own special ambience. Leptis Magna was an important port for the export of wild animals from Africa's southern regions, such as elephants, lions and leopards. For many years Leptis Magna was lost to history until it was rediscovered in the twentieth century when it once again revealed much of the magic of its truly glorious past.

NPM-DVD-129 - South of the equator, in Kenya, is Nakuru Lake one of the natural wonders of the world and the ideal habitat for a large variety of African wildlife. In 1967, Nakuru was the first National Park in Africa that was also designated as a bird reserve. It covers an area of 188 square kilometres and contains much flora and fauna. There are more than four hundred varieties of birds in Nakuru and British biologist Peter Scott called this bird paradise, 'the greatest ornithological spectacle on Earth'. There are flamingos for as far the eye can see and also large numbers of pelicans, plus the Nimmersatt, an African stork. Large herds of antelope and zebra graze on the hot savannah while vultures, lions and hyena hunt for food among the more isolated, slow moving and weaker animals. Giraffes, elephants and rhinos share the same nutritious trees while some of the taller trees are the perfect home for monkeys and baboons. The massive Plant Eater is, apart from the elephant, the largest land mammal in the world plus, with more than thirty varieties of black and two varieties of white rhinos, Lake Nakuru ensures the continued protection of these mighty creatures. Africa is like a Noah's Ark in which the animals of its game reserves live free and protected. It's no surprise therefore Lake Nakuru is known as a magnificent wonder of the Dark Continent's natural world.

NPM-DVD-107 - Nature Parks MASSAI MARA KenyaThe Massai Mara Nature Reserve is the most famous and most visited nature and game reserve in Kenya. Ninety-five varieties of mammals roam its paradise-like terrain and for bird lovers there are around five hundred different species. An estimated 1.4 million gnus live on the reserve and in addition there are around 550,000 gazelle, 200,000 zebra and 64,000 impala. The nature reserve offers visitors comfortable furnished accommodation, Massai style, plus a range of fascinating safaris. At the beginning of the dry season in July and August, the gnu's annual migration from the Serengeti takes place when, with a tumultuous din, countless thousands of animals fight their way through river torrents until they reach the lush vegetation of the Massai Mara. The Massai exist by breeding cattle and throughout the year these semi-nomads move through the savannah seeking out fresh pasture for their herds. The Massai live in 'kraals', low, igloo-shaped huts erected only by the females of the tribe and made from twigs, grass and a mixture of cow dung and mud. The huts are divided into a children's room where the young Massai spend the night with new born calves and lambs, and also a combined living and sleeping area that is also used for cooking. Crocodiles, hippos, giraffes, hyenas, lions, leopards, buffalo, elephants: this nature reserve is home to all of them. The most species-rich savanna grassland on Earth, and its legendary wilderness, provide a fascinating glimpse into a wonder world of nature, a remarkable harmony of wild animals and wonderful landscapes beneath huge African skies. Africa's largest wildlife spectacular gives its visitors an abundance of exciting adventures and countless unforgettable moments

NPM-DVD-140 - The Chobe region in the far north east of Botswana is well known for its fascinating nature. Its national park was named after the Chobe River one of the most important tributaries of the Zambesi that leads into the nearby world famous, Victoria Falls. The Chobe River acts as a central gateway to numerous villages as well as to the national park's various safari lodges. Unlike many other countries in Africa, tourism in Botswana attracts a particularly exclusive and well-off clientele. The advantages of this are soon apparent. As the number of tourists here is relatively small there is a far greater sense of freedom than in other parts of Africa. On the perimeter of Kasane, the largest city in this region, there are several luxurious lodges that are located along the banks of the river. Each of the safari lodges provides its own boat trips on the Chobe River and these can also be arranged to suit individual preferences. The river is ideal for the observation of wildlife and even by African standards the diversity of wildlife here is exceptional. One of the most spectacular attractions are huge herds of elephants as more than half the entire elephant population of Botswana lives in and around the Chobe National Park. Although their numbers fluctuate, around thirty five thousand to fifty thousand elephants live here making this the largest elephant enclosure in the world! Until relatively recently many White Tailed Eagles and Screaming Eagles were to be found along the Chobe River. However, they have now become quite scarce as many of them have been hunted. It is fortunate that some have made these areas of Botswana into their permanent habitat. The Chobe River is not only an exceptional body of water that flows through one of the most biodiverse regions in Africa, it is also a unique world full of natural wonder and captivating charm.

The 392 square kilometre park consists mainly of an extensive plain that was formerly Lake Amboseli. Today it is well known for its rich variety of animals, particularly elephants. The Amboseli Serena Lodge is located within a rainforest-type lush garden and is one of the most luxurious hotels in Kenya and meets the highest demands of the most sophisticated Safari traveller. Over 800 African elephants live within the park along with zebras, gnus, several varieties of antelope, hyenas, giraffe and over forty different birds of prey. The only problem with the Amboseli National Park is deciding what is the more fascinating: the beauty of its wildlife or the splendour of the park itself!

GTR-DVD-1072 - The temple monastery of Xumi-Fushou-Miao is one of the most impressive buildings in Chengde, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Overall, there are eight "outer-temple-monasteries" each of them with its own architectural style. The temple was built in 1780 to mark the visit to China of a senior Tibetan religious dignitary, the sixth Panchen Lama, the first in history to visit China. It is a replica of what was his own monastery in Tibet. The construction of this monastery played an important role in the diplomatic relationship between the Chinese Emperor, Quing Long, and Tibet. The multi-level roofs of Xumi-Fushou-Miao are of the highest aesthetic and artistic finesse. Numerous enchanting ornaments adorn the splendid roofs of these captivating temples. GTR-DVD-1088 - The tall minarets of the Sultan Ahmet Mosque, known also as the Blue Mosque, tower proudly into the heavens and dominate the skyline of Istanbul, the Turkish capital on the Bosporus. At the beginning of the 17th century the young and ambitious sultan, Ahmet The First, decided that an additional building should replace the Hagia Sophia as the city's main mosque. With its graduated cupolas, the building was designed to be as impressive as possible, thus a spacious courtyard was also included. Elegant columned halls surround a square at the centre of which there is an hexagonal fountain where the faithful once cleansed themselves prior to prayer. Today, the faithful wash themselves along the external sidewalls of the courtyard. In the eastern section is the Mederse, the mosque's School of the Koran. Four massive five metre thick pillars known as 'Elephants' Feet' support the incredible weight of the Blue Mosque's massive central cupola. It derived its popular alias of the Blue Mosque due to its internal décor that consists of twenty-one thousand precious blue coloured Fayence wall tiles from Iznik. The Topkapi Palace, which over the years was greatly extended by various sultans, is also located in the historic centre of Istanbul and until 1853 it was the royal residence of the Osmanic royal family. Along the picturesque shoreline of the Bosporus are numerous ancient mosques, palaces and villas and one of the longest and most impressive suspension bridges in the world connects this fascinating European city and its twelve million inhabitants to Asia. GTR-DVD-1210 - Angkor Thom and the ruins of the last great capital of the Khmer are entered by way of an impressive causeway that contains an array of gigantic statues. This 'giants' causeway' consists of a hundred and eight mythical beings and divine spirits which, according to leading archaeologists, were created toward the end of the 12th century. The main features of the royal palace were built around a hundred and fifty years prior to the remaining construction of Angkor Thom by Suryavarman The First. In subsequent years the centre of the palace complex was the Phimeanakas, the Aerial Palace, that was mostly used for important royal occasions. The royal palace is surrounded by several terraces such as the Elephant Terrace famous for its exquisite decoration. The magnificent stonemasonry is just one of the reasons that Angkor Thom is one of the greatest cultural heritage sights in Cambodia. Most sections of its northern wall are adorned with highly detailed portrayals of ceremonial elephants. In recent decades the unique cultural and historical importance of Cambodia's Angkor Thom has attracted much interest from around the world.
