VPG-DVD-172 - YUCATÁN It is in Uxmal where historic Mexico is at its most beautiful and that our journey through the millennia begins, along the Yucatan Peninsula, land of Maya culture. The Cuadrángulo De Los Monjas comprises four buildings with many entrances that lead into various small rooms, typical of Puuc architecture. The forty two metre high Fortune Teller Pyramid is situated in the centre of the complex and the main entrance to the Nuns' Quadrangle dates back to the 9th century and is flanked on both sides by columned halls. Since the 10th century the remains of the Pre-Columbian architecture of Chichen Itza have combined two cultures, the Maya and the Toltecs. The total number of steps that lead up to the temple, including those on each of its four sides, number an amazing three hundred and sixty five - one for each day of the year! The facades of its buildings are adorned with mosaics. Geometrical ornaments alternate with images of numerous deities and the heads of fantastic animals. Today, the Isla Del Cozumel, an island close to Yucatan, is the destination of luxurious cruise liners that lay anchor so that passengers can enjoy the local scenery. Whether feathered or scaled, the abundant variety of Yucatan's animal kingdom is a fascinating sight both above and below water. The turquoise coloured water of the bay makes it possible to view the seabed to a depth of thirty metres. Women in traditional costume prepare tortillas: what Cortez once referred to as a 'corn pancake' is today an international favourite. Daily routine is just as it was hundreds of years ago and each season of the year determines the daily work of the rural population. Ancient culture and snow white sandy beaches, this is the YUCATAN Peninsula!

VPG-DVD-217 - WACHAU Our journey across Wachau begins in Stein, a town district of Krems, one of the oldest cultivated landscapes in Austria. The sole 'Gateway Into The Wachau' is a unique region of the Danube between Krems-Stein and Melk. A total of a hundred and thirteen houses encapsulate the medieval city that was built along the Steiner Road on the banks of the Danube. Today the town's facades and entrance-ways are decorated in traditional style and compliment the impressive Renaissance splendour of the buildings. Thirty-six kilometres of the Danube Valley with magnificent cities, castles and historic ruins, a Baroque monastery and an old vine-growing culture. VPG-DVD-216 - VALLETTA Valletta is the capital city of the Mediterranean island of Malta and is also known as The City of Palaces. It was once inhabited in turn by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Turks and in 1530 the Order of the Knights of Malta moved its main residence to this section of the island. Malta's pre-historic epoch is demonstrated by its primeval stone temples and graves. They belong to the Menhir period that extended to the British Isles. The St. John's Co-Cathedral was built in1577 by Gerolama Cassar as a monastic church of the Order of the Knights of Malta. At the command of Pope Pius the 7th, in 1816 it was designated as a cathedral and was given the same privileges as the bishop's seat in Medina, thus its somewhat strange title of 'Co-Cathedral'. Situated on the northernmost point of the peninsula is the famous Saint Elmo Fort, a dominant feature of the coast. Throughout the centuries it has been witness to many bloody battles and much courageous resistance. It reached its zenith during the time of the Knights of Saint John who expanded the fortress and made it almost totally impregnable. Its walls successfully fended off the Turks and later the French blocked off the harbour entrance to the British fleet. During the Second World War anti- aircraft artillery were positioned on the fort's upper levels to defend against both German and Italian bombers. The Orient and the Occident have both left their traces in Valletta a picturesque location carved from stone. The former City Of Knights in which the future joins with the past.

VPG-DVD-180 - TYROL Set within the magnificent Alps the Tyrol is a picturesque federal state in the west of Austria and is one of the most beautiful areas in Europe. It contains many ancient towns, monasteries and fortresses that highlight the region's history and its proud and hardy mountain people. Kitzbühel was once a prosperous mining town but today it is a world famous ski resort that is also popular in the summer months. The old town with its pretty middle class buildings that date back to the fifteenth century is a fine example of Austria's country's rural architecture. Around four thousand people live in the village of Wildschönau that is situated in a fascinating valley of the Kitzbüheler Alps that extend for some twenty four kilometres. Niederau is the entrance to the Wildschönau region and Oberau is the main village in a valley that features eye catching farm houses whose carved wooden balconies are decorated with splendid flowers. The Alpbach Tal leads into an untouched natural landscape where at an altitude of nine hundred and seventy five metres above sea level is the remote mountain village of Alpbach, the most beautiful village in the Tyrol. Kühtai is in the Stubaier Alps and can be reached from the Ötztal via the Sellraintal that travels at an altitude of around two thousand metres parallel to the Inntal. Each season of the year this popular Alpine holiday region attracts visitors from all over the world. The Tyrol is a "Land Of Mountains" and a natural treasure in the very heart of Europe!

VPG-DVD-148 - VILLE DE QUÉBEC On behalf of the French crown, in 1608 Samuel De Champlain established a fur trading post from which originated Québec, a city that today looms over the Saint Laurence River like a majestic fortress. It is the birthplace of French culture in North America. With its small towers and green glimmering roofs the Chateau Frontenac majestically watches over the city. The castle like hotel was built and lavishly furnished in 1894 by the Canadian Pacific Railway and in 1943 was the rendezvous for the allies who met to prepare for the Normandy Landings. Québec's upper city is encircled by a four kilometre long fortified wall that was alternately built upon by the French and the English. In former times, various gates barred entry to the fortress but today they are wide open and welcome visitors into the well preserved old town. Designed by master builder Baillairgè in 1844, La Cathedrale Notre Dame De Québec was Canada's first Catholic cathedral. The Baroque dome of the basilica demonstrates the splendour of Catholic Church design while the altar captivates with its rich detail and paintings of the Holy Mother. The Funiculaire connects the upper city with the lower, the Quartier Petit Champlaine that was the country's first settlement. The train station looks like a mediaeval castle and its large hall seems to be the grand entrance chamber of a palace. The station's anterooms contain huge windows while its ceilings display colourful glass images. Canada's oldest city has successfully retained its deep and historic roots and has sensitively linked them to the needs of the modern world. Québec is truly a sparkling gem of French culture in North America.

Since antiquity its unique location has brought it both power and wealth. The Street Of The Knights leads from the Grand Master Palace down the hill to the Hospital, a unique ensemble of Gothic medieval architecture set amid the Mediterranean. The main buildings of the various groups of knights were erected along the main street and it was here that the knights met and conferred according to their membership of various European regions. Rhodes is an island steeped in history as well as the calm lifestyle of the Mediterranean.

A bridge and a fountain are the focal points of this popular park created in typical French style. A modern glass pyramid and a fountain decorate the courtyard of the former Louvre Palace, which since the time of the Revolution has been transformed into a museum that contains the famous Louvre art gallery. Its collection of remarkable historic treasures and superb art collection make it one of the world's most famous museums. with Leonardo Da Vinci´s masterpiece, the Mona Lisa, taking pride of place. Situated on a small island on the River Seine is the Cathedral Of Notre Dame, the 'Mother Church Of The Nation'. Built on the foundations of a Roman temple and commissioned by the bishops Maurice and Eudes De Sully, it took almost 200 years to build this Gothic masterpiece. Built at the end of the 19th century as a symbol of national revival, Montmartre's Sacre Coeur has the appearance of a white, fairy-tale palace with 237 steps that lead up to the main entrance of this extraordinary structure. Its Byzantine architecture and five cupolas are reminiscent of the Marcus Dome in Venice. Of course, there are the dizzy heights of the Eiffel Tower and a great deal more. Paris is a wonderful festival of the senses!

VPG-DVD-123 - NEPAL At the foot of the huge peaks of the Himalayas is Pokhara and it is from here that we begin our journey through Nepal. At one time this high valley contained seven fresh water lakes named Pokhari and they gave this holiday paradise its present day name. In the past, Pokhara was an important trading link between India and Tibet but the trading of salt and wool came to an end after Tibet closed its doors to the outside world. Its population is extremely tolerant and both the Buddhist and Hindu faiths coexist side by side. A safari by elephant is a real adventure as the mahuts skilfully lead the ambling giants through the bush. Travelling through the jungle on the back of an elephant offers good protection from rhinoceroses and other predators. Kathmandu is a melting pot of both race and religion, a metropolis in the heart of the Kingdom of Nepal. In the centre of the city is the ancient palace of Hanuman Dhoka. More than seven hundred thousand people live in the metropolis of Earth's most ancient kingdom. It was only a few decades ago that ancient Nepal opened up its borders. Until then, due to the command of the ruling Gurkha Dynasty, the 'Home of the Divine' was totally isolated. Patan is Nepal's second largest city and has retained much of its original character due to its three hundred monasteries and temples. It is also one of the oldest settlements in Kathmandu Valley and during the 15th century was the capital of one of three kingdoms. Two huge lions guard the entrance of the former royal palace that originated from a monastery complex. Bhaktapur is the third ancient regal city of the thirty kilometre long Kathmandu Valley that has always been a prosperous trading route between China, Tibet and India. Our journey through this fairytale land ends at the foot of the mighty Himalayas amidst a wonderful world in which the gods are still very much alive!

VPG-DVD-174 - NAIROBI Nairobi is Kenya's busy, expensive yet dangerous capital city, but it is also both fascinating and modern. Nairobi is the country's most important and beautiful city and, with the finest temperate climate between Johannesburg and Cairo, is located at an altitude of almost seventeen hundred metres above sea level. The government district of City Square contains the Conference Centre and the Kanu Tower, the headquarters of government and the city's tallest building. Canon guard the main entrance to the National Museum that is situated on Museum Hill. A fascinating building that covers much of Kenya's culture and history. The museum provides an interesting insight into Pre-history as well as to various cultures and the country's flora and fauna. Directly in front of the city gates is the Nairobi National Park, the oldest of all Kenya's nature parks. Groups of ostriches can be seen bathing in the hot sand and a number of springboks stroll around elegantly between scattered rocks and trees that have been uprooted by elephants as zebra pasture close to the city's skyline. Nairobi is a metropolis in the 'Realm Of The Golden Sun' and is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating cities in the world.

VPG-DVD-163 - MARSEILLE Marseille is the oldest city in France and its largest commercial harbour in the Mediterranean. It is believed that in 600 B.C. travellers from the Greek town of Phokis founded the autonomous town of 'Massalia'. In the Middle Ages the city's main harbour was used by the crusaders to embark on their journey to Jerusalem and it rivalled those of the maritime republics of Genoa, Pisa and Venice. One of Marseille's main landmarks rises high above the harbour, the seafarers' church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Garde. It towers above the city like a fortress and on its bell tower is a gilded ten metre high figure of the Virgin Mary. Several hundred yachts of all sizes crowd into the old harbour where there is often little room for the comings and goings of modern day sailors. It is difficult to imagine that once near-starving slaves were forced to use their last ounce of strength to row their master's galleys into the harbour. Modern harbour complexes require a great deal of space as is well demonstrated by Marseille's new harbour and after Rotterdam it is the second largest in Europe. Two mighty fortresses overlook the harbour: the northern Fort Saint-Jean is the oldest and was used by the Order Of The Knights Of Malta; the Fort Saint Nicolas stands guard over the southern side of the narrow harbour entrance and was built in the 17th century. The tiny island of Chateau D`If was made famous due to a novel by Alexander Dumas, The Count Of Monte Christo. A small museum features many items related to this classic novel and visitors can search for the hole in the wall through which Edmond Dantès is said to have entered the Abbé Faria. A boat trip from Cassis leads to one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe: Les Calanques a unique nature reserve. Shining white limestone cliffs plunge more than four hundred metres into the deep blue sea and extend for twenty kilometres. Marseille - France's wonderful gateway to Africa!

The Yerebatan Cistern once provided Constantinople with its water supply. Emperor Justinian had this subterranean reservoir built and it holds eighty thousand cubic metres of water. A forest of more than three hundred decorated stone columns support the ceiling and it once served as a backdrop for a James Bond film. A mighty gate is the entrance to the splendid world of the Turkish sultans, Topkapi, the former centre of power of the Osman Empire. It's like a small town with many exquisite buildings and wonderful parks. Leonardo Da Vinci's vision of a bridge across the Bosporus was for many years only a dream but four hundred and seventy years later the dream became reality. At a height of sixty-four metres two city districts have been united in addition to two continents and the contrasting lifestyles of two completely different worlds. Istanbul is a melting pot of culture and religion with a captivating allure and an irresistible atmosphere of mystique.

VPG-DVD-160 - BHAKTAPUR Bhaktapur, also known as 'the city of the pious' is the third of the ancient royal cities in the thirty kilometre long Kathmandu Valley in the Kingdom of Nepal and also a Unesco World Heritage Sight. On both sides of Durbar Square are many precious art treasures but the city is also fully-functional and a 'car free' open air museum! The medieval city derived from a fortress complex and was later transformed into a palace area. At the western end of Durbar Square is Dvarikanath Mandir, a replica of the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu. Today a huge pair of lions flank the entrance to the National Art Gallery and there are images of Hanuman and Narasimha. Vatsala Devi Mandir is a temple with a square, three-tiered base. This sacred building has a corridor set around a central Shikhara tower and its stairway is flanked by elephants and two fantastic horses. The number of the city's small temples, shrines and dwellings of the gods is many and complex and they can be found at each crossroads and in every courtyard and doorway. Bhaktapur has also been immortalized in the movie, Little Buddha. For those interested in culture the Kingdom of Nepal is a dream destination and Bhaktapur is a truly atmospheric journey into a rich and golden past.
