VPG-DVD-117 - MARRAKESH Marrakesh, the 'red pearl' of Morocco was founded by Youssef Ben Tachfin in 1602. It is one of the country's four Royal Cities. Up to the beginning of the 20th century the city was a trading centre for both the north of Morocco and the Sahara and the monarchs of various dynasties made Marrakesh their capital city. The large souks of Marrakesh's Medina are divided into numerous sections and stock just about everything known to Man! In spite of the city's apparent calm there is much activity and the traffic is surprisingly well disciplined. Marrakesh has the largest souks in Morocco. As well as shoes and clothing they stock all the necessities of life and of course bargaining and haggling are the norm! Daily life in the souks is dominated by trade. They are a vital meeting place and trading centre for the farmers of the High Atlas. Those who wish to experience Moroccan daily life can do so here and a stroll through the narrow alleys taking in the city's sounds and aromas explains far more than any travel guide. Place Jemaa El-Fna is the 'Square Of The Beheaded' and is Marrakesh's most famous attraction with snake charmers, musicians and storytellers. In 2001 the Square Of The Beheaded was designated by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. Built in 1158, the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosquee is the symbol of the city. The seventy seven metre tall sandstone minaret served as the model for the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat and most of it was built by Spanish prisoners of war. Marrakesh is an historic bridge that unites both urban and nomadic cultures - an exotic gateway to Africa and a captivating window to Europe!

VPG-DVD-157 - YUNNAN Kunming is located in the Chinese province of Yunnan in south west China. The Buddhist temple of Ykan Ton Si dates back to the Tang Dynasty. The design of the city's largest temple complex was influenced by many diverse ethnic groups. The highlight of the complex is a lake in the middle of which a number of bridges lead to an octagonal pavilion. The Temple Of Total Penetration (yes, that's it's name!) is a tranquil and peaceful haven amid the busy alleys of Kunming's old town. In the west of Yunnan Province there are magnificent views from Xi Shan Mountain across Dian Lake and nestling among the rocks there are numerous temples that were once the scene of ritual sacrifice. On the downward journey the temples loom larger and larger while earthenware images of Buddha depict various stages of life. Yunnan's most famous site is the unique Stone Forest of Shi Lin. Its limestone rock originated from a long since dried--up ocean when the elements set to work on creating its fantastic and bizarre forms. The most amazing formations were given dramatic names such as The Sea Of Fire, Dragon's Tooth and Heavenly Sword. Pagodas, columns and strange flowers appear to rise from the rock and to facilitate access, tunnels and paths have been cut into the rock face. The Venice Of The Far East is the nickname of the ancient Chinese city of Lijiang in the northwest of Yunnan Province. The picturesque centre of the old town of Dayan is an architectural gem. Three rivers and several small creeks flow through the historic cit and there are various splendid stone bridges date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Buy Shan is a typical village of the region. Just as it was hundreds of years ago with farmers slowly leading their ox wagons through the village. The houses were built over a period of more than two hundred year between the Ming and Qing Dynasties in 14 and 16 A.D. Yunnan Province - place of simplicity, exquisite culture and spectacular natural wonders!

VPG-DVD-207 - CARINTHIA Carinthia is Austria's southernmost region and borders both Italy and Slovenia. It is located in the sunny heart of Europe with more than a thousand lakes plus spectacular alpine regions and numerous Celtic Roman excavation sites, medieval castles, monasteries and cathedrals. In the eastern part of Carinthia and more than a thousand metres above sea level is one of the region's oldest historical villages, the mountain village of Diex. In the fifteenth century the Turks invaded the area with great savagery thus, as protection, local farmers built castellated churches in which they sought sanctuary. Friesach, Carinthia's oldest city, has retained what must be the true ambience of the Middle Ages, with a fortified princely estate and churches and monasteries that are surrounded by sturdy walls and a moat. The Maria Saal Open Air Museum is situated in the heart of Carinthia. In this richly cultural and historic area various traditional farm buildings from all over Carinthia have been reconstructed. Klagenfurt is the administrative centre of Carinthia: a middle class garden city that does not contain the fine buildings of the aristocracy but has a good helping of southern flair and, due to the nearby Wörthersee, is a marvellous summer resort. The Grossglockner High Alps road travels through one of the greatest natural landscapes in the world, the Hohe Tauern National Park, a remarkable mountain world in which nature is at its most glorious.

OTT-DVD-128 - Our journey through Lan Na, the 'Kingdom of a Million Rice Fields', begins in the historically rich city of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. Built in the 14th century, Wat Phra Singh is situated in the historic centre of the city and is one of Chiang Mai's most important religious sanctuaries. Apart from its wealth of historic architecture the city is also well known for its popular arts and crafts, especially its colourful cotton and silk umbrellas. The cultivation of rice has been known in Eastern Asia since 3500 B.C. Even though the majority of Thai rice farmers are poor, their work is much respected. Work in the paddy fields is hard and the daily life of the rice farmers is influenced by the seasons and particularly the weather. Even today, water buffalo are frequently seen pulling the traditional water wheels that assist in the irrigation of the land. Mae Hong Son is a notorious town as it is situated close to the infamous Golden Triangle, one of the largest opium producing areas in the world. On the shores of the town's small lake are several beautiful sanctuaries such as the Mon temple of Wat Chong Klang built according to traditional Burmese design. Those who venture out onto the dark streets of Mae Hong Son early in the morning can witness the daily life of this colourful community. The large amount of local produce and specialties is not only fascinating but also quite tempting and a feast for the eye as well as the soul! The impressive cultural diversity of the mountain people and the beauty of nature make a journey through the former kingdom of Lan Na a truly unforgettable experience.

OTT-DVD-129 - Karelia, the most eastern province in Finland, fascinates with its vast, untouched, wild and romantic scenery. Yet this region has a lot more to offer as apart from the obvious allure of nature there are also many cultural treasures to be discovered. Despite its modern town centre the historic origins of Kajaani, a town with around thirty six thousand inhabitants, dates back to the 17th century. It is especially proud of its most famous poet, Elias Lönnrot, who in 1835 published the Finnish national classic, Kalevala. One of the most striking buildings in the town is the large and towering Neo-Gothic Kajaani Church that dates back to 1896. Soapstone is of great economic importance for the seven thousand inhabitants of Juuka. Due to its exceptional heat-retaining properties, soapstone is well suited for many practical uses such as floor heating, ovens and fireplaces. Indeed, several renowned Finnish architects have immortalized the soapstone in various contemporary buildings and have thus added to its popularity. The Kärimäen Kirkko, an amazing 19th century church in Kerimäki, is the largest timber built church in the Christian world. This impressive church that took only three years to erect was built by the farmers of Kerimäki and can accommodate a congregation of more than five thousand. With its maze-like dimensions that cover four thousand three hundred square kilometres, Saimaa Lake is the fourth largest lake in Europe. Huge quantities of timber are slowly negotiated along the region's lakes and rivers as forestry has for many centuries been the region's sole means of existence. The unspoiled wilderness and natural beauty of the infinite lake land scenery of Karelia makes it a place of irresistible charm and magical allure!

GTR-DVD-1260 - The ruins of the ancient city of Palmyra rise up into the desert sky of Syria. The Hadrian Gate was built in the second century A.D. and highlights the glorious past of this once important trading metropolis in the Near East. Flanked by columns, a majestic twelve hundred metre long avenue was once Palmyra's main street. As with many of the city's other buildings it also has an impressive theatre that dates back to the second century A.D. and was discovered in the 1950's. For some years it has once again served as a place of entertainment as each spring it features a festival. Close to the Agora, once a farmer's market, is Palmyra's striking main landmark, the Tetrapylon that forms the junction between the main avenue and a side road that leads to the city's Necropolis. The subterranean Hypogaum Of The Three Brothers contains almost four hundred burial corridors and numerous artistic sculptures and frescos. From the seventh century A.D. the magnificent trading metropolis gradually fell into decline and was almost completely wiped from the map. Thankfully however, today the atmospheric ruins serve as a reminder of Palmyra's glorious past. GTR-DVD-1211 - Lush green surrounds the historic buildings of the remote farm settlement of Glaumbaer deep in the north of Iceland. Glaumbaer's turf houses were built in the late 19th century but the origin of the farm dates back far longer. Many of its stone structures were built by the Vikings who lived in the region during the 11th century. As was common in most of Iceland's former farming communities, Glaumbaer contained several buildings that were located around a central building. The 'badstofa' served as a working, living and sleeping space and was also the location of the communal kitchen, one of the most popular places to be in the harsh cold of winter. In addition to the important archaeological finds that have recently been made, the former ancient community of farmers and Vikings that once lived here no doubt still contains many a secret yet to be discovered. GTR-DVD-1251 - Around seventy kilometres west of the Libyan capital of Tripoli are the remnants of an ancient city that has been in ruins since ancient times. As with Oea and Leptis Magna, Sabratha was one of the last large trading cities of the former Tripolitania. A re-constructed theatre that could accommodate an audience of five thousand is the ancient city's most impressive building and dates back to the second century B.C. It was built by the Romans whose cultural influence on Sabratha lasted for several centuries. Several baths, among them the Thermal Salt Water Baths on the coast, give an insight into the high living standards of the city's former inhabitants and trade with the farmers of the surrounding region helped to make life in the town extremely pleasant. In the seventh century A.D. the city was conquered by the Arabs. However, they selected another Tripolitanian metropolis as their capital city. Thus the once-glorious Sabratha fell into decay and lay forgotten for several centuries. GTR-DVD-1219 - Malta's temples are older than the Egyptian pyramids. Indeed, the tiny Mediterranean island is a veritable archaeological treasure trove and its largest prehistoric temple site is situated in Tarxien. The remains of the religious sanctuary were discovered in 1914 when local farmers stumbled across some huge blocks of stone while ploughing their fields. Subsequent excavation of the site revealed several remarkable prehistoric finds such as fragments of pottery, stone images and a large number of urns. Carbon dating has established that the Tarxien temples date back to between 3,300 to 2,400 B.C. The temple area, and those of its rocks that have been partially decorated with geometrical forms, extend across an area of several hundred metres. The massive rocks raise the question of how those who brought them to this location were able to transport such heavy material here four thousand five hundred years ago. GTR-DVD-1093 - Surrounded by the attractive provincial mountain landscape of the Alpilles there is a romantic mediaeval town high on a rock, Les Baux-De-Provence, located 400 metres above the Crau Valley. The historic origins of the village date back to the first millennium A.D. Located in the lower, busier part of the town, the Saint Vincent Church dates back to the 12th century and it is an atmospheric setting for famous Christmas performances such as the Shepherds´ Midnight Mass. Archaeological discoveries and precious works of art are to be found in the Musée D´Histoire De Baux that also serves as the entrance to the upper part of the town. In times of freedom the country's finest troubadours gathered in the town's now ruined castle. Immortalized by a monument, the farmer poet, Charles Rieu, is considered to have been a fine exponent of this age-old tradition. However, in1483 the art of the troubadour grew silent and was replaced by the sound of battle when the powerful catapults of Ludwig The Eleventh destroyed large sections of the castle. Like no other village in the Alpilles, Les Baux-De-Provence has long been the centre of this region's glorious history. GTR-DVD-1052 - Glurns Glorenza is a small town in the Southern Tyrol. A written account of the town was first made in the 12th century, however, it only received its status as a Meinhardinic town in 1294. Today, the picturesque town has seven hundred inhabitants and even now enjoys certain privileges once granted to it by a royal prince. Shortly after the founding of the town around the end of the 13th century began the flowering period of the Tyrolean trading routes and commercial centres of the Middle Ages. In 1499 the outbreak of the Engadiner War shook Glurns. During the Battle of Calven on May 22nd., events took a turn for the worse. Constant hostilities between the Hapsburg and Swiss Confederation finally led to a great battle and the defeat of the royal troupes. The hostile farmers´ army took the Hapsburg army by surprise, thus a massacre took place within the defenceless town. Approximately six thousand people were killed and a week later King Maximillian saw for himself the full extent of the catastrophic massacre. Throughout the centuries an impressive part of the Tyrol's moving history has been well preserved beyond the unique walls, towers and gates of Glurns Glorenza.
