Music: Rien de Rien -Edith Piaff, Funiculi Funicula -Luciano Pavarotti, Bizet's Carmen -Waldo de los Rios. Dad loved all these great pieces of music. Ten years ago, we embarked on a journey that would change our lives and our relationship. My father and I bonded man to man for the first time rather than as father and son. Three weeks on the road in a beat-up truck with incredible scenery around every curve, the midnight sun that never went down... Crossing the Arctic Circle on the Dempster Highway was the high point of the trip for me, and ever since that trip both me and my father remembered it as the trip of a lifetime, and the best trip that either of us had ever been on. In later years, I asked him if he'd like to do it again, and his enthusiasm seemed to be declining every time I brought it up. I think it was 2003 when I asked again. He said he'd need to fly into Whitehorse because he didn't want to drive all the way through BC again. By last year he just wasn't into it at all anymore. This year, and on this day I cherish the memories... I will take that trip again someday, but it just won't be the same with dear ol' DAd...Yukon

VPG-DVD-178 - UNITED ARAB EMIRATES Situated on the Arabian Peninsula between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, the United Arab Emirates are like a fairy-tale from the One Thousand And One Nights. In just a few years the region has been catapulted from the Middle Ages into the 21st century and it is now an international financial centre within an ancient desert region. It contains seven sheikdoms that are united both politically and economically. Dubai is a wonderful holiday paradise with a romantic desert and a long history in which the past unites with the present. It is the second largest state in the United Arab Emirates and is situated on the north coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Fifteen kilometres from Dubai is the tiny Emirate of Sharjah where life continues according to age-old Arabian tradition. Tourism was once popular on this former pirate coast but the Saudi king subsequently prohibited the consumption of alcohol and thus the tourists stayed away. Abu Dhabi is the largest of the seven Emirates and means, Father Of The Gazelle, a name derived from an ancient legend. The seventy three thousand square kilometres of the Abu Dhabi region cover eighty-six per cent of the United Arab Emirates and in the 1960's the city had a population of five thousand that has now grown to almost a million. As the oil supplies gradually trickle away the sheiks are becoming increasingly cautious with their spending and the oil boom has now been followed by tourism in this fairy-tale holiday paradise that is full of desert romance.

VPG-DVD-105 - St. Petersburg In 1703, Tsar Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg in the swampy delta mouth of the Newa. It became Russia's capital city and remained so until 1918 when Lenin and his revolutionary Bolshevik government moved to Moscow. Today it is a living monument to the lives and times of Russia's Imperial Tsars The Winter Palace contains Russia's largest museum, the Eremitage, which houses more than two and a half million exhibits. Since Peter the Great, Russian rulers purchased many major works of art, but it was Catherine The Great who acquired complete collections from the auction houses of Europe. The Admiralty, with its needle-shaped, gold-plated tower, is one of the city's most famous landmarks, its grand architecture depicting the emergence of Russia as a naval power and the marvellous Isaaks Cathedral has the third largest dome in the world. Twenty four thousand tree stumps were used for its foundations and it can accommodate a congregation of 14,000. The Peter And Paul Cathedral was the burial place of the Tsars and it contains the marble coffin of Peter the Great. The most colourful church in Russia is the Resurrection Of Christ Cathedral which was built on the orders of Tsar Alexander the Third on land where, in 1881, his father, Alexander the Second, had been killed by a bomb planted by a revolutionary group. Russian Baroque and Russian Classicism were established in St. Petersburg -- city of monumental events, outstanding architecture and an Imperial metropolis on the grand scale.

VPG-DVD-168 - BOSTON Boston has over half a million inhabitants and is the largest of New England's cities. As its most important commercial and financial centre, the city on the Charles River has always played an historic role and was the cradle of Independence. In the centre of Boston, Copley Square features the Trinity Church, which contrasts with the modern Hancock Tower that dominates the skyline. Park Street Church was where, in 1829, William Garrison gave his first anti-slavery speech. In the adjacent Granary Burial Ground some of America's most famous sons are buried, such as John Hancock, Samuel Adams and Paul Revere. Beacon Hill has hardly changed over the past 150 years, an architectural gem with narrow, winding cobbled streets and even today the wrought ironwork of its balconies and banisters indicate that this is one of Boston's most sought after areas. In front of the Old South Meeting House, in 1729 thousands of Boston's inhabitants protested against the English king and the taxes that he had imposed upon them. The Old State House is Boston's oldest public building. In 1776, it was here that the Declaration of Independence was read out for the first time. The Plimouth Plantation is a reconstruction of the Pilgrim Fathers' original settlement and is one of the jewels of the many living museums in the USA. To the south west of Boston there is the museum town of Old Sturbridge Village in which historic buildings from all over the country have been lovingly replicated.. Village inhabitants in historical costumes walk and talk in wide open spaces and act out the scenes of daily life as it was two centuries ago. New England is the traditional face of America and the heart of America's past.

VPG-DVD-182 - AMSTERDAM Amsterdam is a captivating metropolis, a city of canals in which anything is allowed as long as it does no harm. In 1567 the much-travelled Italian, Lodovico Guicciardini, referred to Amsterdam as 'The Venice of the north'. Today the view across the main square and royal castle gives little hint that the city is supported by stakes and that Amsterdam is the largest lakeland village in the world. The bicycle is one of the city's main features and indeed parking spaces have been designed specially for this mode of transport that shows that even in a large city there is an alternative way of getting about. In the city centre there are nearly seven thousand protected houses and warehouses most of which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries and the three hundred year old Magere Brug is of wood construction and is one of the most beautiful drawbridges in the world. The Bloemenmarkt has been in existence since the 17th century and in bygone days fresh flowers were delivered by boat and sold on board. Here a great variety of colourful tulips and bulbs is offered for sale as well as many exotic plants and seeds. New Church is almost six hundred years old but due to it's lack of worshippers it is now used as a venue for exhibitions and concerts which fund its continued maintenance. Built in around 1300 A.D., Old Church is the oldest religious building in the city. During the Middle Ages it served as a refuge for vagrants but today it is surrounded by a seedy sex and entertainment district. In 1682 the city fathers decided to create a leisure area in the east of the city in the centre of which the Artis Zoo was subsequently established, the oldest zoo on the European continent. Amsterdam possesses an inescapable charm that is adored by both aged hippies and trendy teenagers alike. It is Europe's irresistible 'Capital of Cool!

GTR-DVD-1050 - MOSTEIRO DOS JERÓNIMOS MONASTERY OF JERONIMOS In the Lisbon quarter of Belém the vast Hieronymit Monastery, the Mosteiro Dos Jerónimos, covers an area of 300 metres. At one time its beautiful facade was situated close to the banks of the Tejo and it is no accident that the monastery was built in this location. King Manuel The First wanted the monastery to highlight the importance of religion for the sea-faring nation of Portugal at the beginning of the 16th century.Henry The Sailor donated the tiny Maria Chapel that was the first structure within the actual monastery area. Together with his father, King João The First, he led a fleet of 200 ships to victory against the North African harbour town of Cueta. Portugal was a mighty sea power. Courageous voyages of discovery led to the development of trade on newly discovered continents and along with his loyal sailors the world famous discoverer, Vasco Da Gamma, prayed in the Maria Chapel of Henry The Sailor prior to his ocean-going adventures. Ribbed Gothic vaults support the ceiling of the church that dates back to the 16th century. Coloured glass windows create a breathtaking spectacle of light. In addition to various important members of the Portuguese royal family and numerous religious leaders, it is also the final resting place of Vasco Da Gama. The monastery's richly decorated facade still shines out with all the glorious lustre of Portugal's courageous seamen and their remarkable voyages of discovery. GTR-DVD-1175 - The stone-built church of the Mission San Carlos Borroméo De Carmelo rises above the southern district of the picturesque and romantic coastal town of Carmel in the United States. The Carmel Mission was founded in 1771 when Father Juniperro Serra, from Mallorca in Spain, was responsible for the building of the first missionary stations in the United States. The Mission possesses one of the most important and beautiful collections of religious works of art in California. Today only a few of the former twenty-one missions are in good condition. They were all once located alongside California's six hundred kilometre King's Road and over the years Carmel's unique climate has transformed the Mission's gardens into an exotic paradise that contributes to the idyllic character of this religious complex. Right up to the present day the Carmel Mission has managed to retain several pages of American history that would otherwise have been lost forever. GTR-DVD-1085 - Kungliga Slottet is a majestic royal castle that is located on the highest point of the island of Stadsholmen in the middle of the attractive historical old town of Stockholm known as Gamla Stan. The castle became an official royal residence when Swedish monarch, King Adolf Fredrik, resided there. With its 608 rooms the castle is considered to be one of the greatest royal residences in the world and home to the Swedish crown jewels. The design of the Royal castle and its splendid facade was created by the architect, Nicodemus Tessin The Younger. His father, Nicodemus The Elder, built the Tre Kronor Castle at the end of the 17th century which was named after the three crowns that are depicted in the Swedish coat of arms. In 1697 a devastating fire swept through Stockholm and also the Tre Kronor Castle. Shortly after the fire, the castle of Kungliga Slottet, designed in Italian Baroque style, rose up from the ruins of Tre Kronor Castle. For more than 250 years the cityscape of Sweden's capital of Stockholm would not have been complete without the splendour of Kungliga Slottet. GTR-DVD-1125 - Around fifty kilometres northwest of Madrid, the austere yet opulent residence of El Escorial extends up the southern slope of the Sierra De Guadarrama. It was built during the rule of King Phillip II after his father Karl V ordered him to build a magnificent church in which he would eventually be buried. The Escorial was to be a pantheon for the Spanish aristocracy and also served as the country's new centre of authority. In rooms such as the Pudridero the significance of El Escorial as a burial place is evident. King Phillip II required that the exterior of the building should be plain and simple in contrast to the interior with its unusual works of art and priceless treasures. The impressive art museum contains an exclusive collection by important artist such as Titian, Tintoretto, Rubens, Van Dyck, Hieronymus Bosch, Velázquez and El Greco. In the royal pantheon, the Panteón De Reyes, lie the coffins of eleven Spanish monarchs. The splendid marble coffins with their golden inscriptions add both dignity and elegance to this burial place. Philipp II was not only a larger-than-life tyrant, he was also an educated man who supported science and the arts. El Escorial was his most significant bequest to Spain. 7DY-DVD-134 - The Sultanate Of Oman is a fabulous land full of surprises, a splendid example of original Arabia from the Straits Of Hormuz to the southern Dhofar. Up until the 1970's the third largest country in the Arabian Peninsula was only accessible by various caravan routes. It has an abundance of mysterious desert towns and splendid palaces. Our journey begins on the northern coast of the Gulf Of Oman. The white city of Sohar is the historic harbour of the Islamic world and the 'Gateway To China'. Sinbad the Sailor is said to have lived there in the 8th century and after he spent his father's inheritance it is believed that he travelled to Baghdad to seek his fortune there. The city is still guarded by the white Sohar Fort, a mighty four story building that dates back to the 14th century. The Nakhl Fortress is located on a rock at the foot of the mountain of the same name, Jebel Nakhl. Both walls and rock form a complete architectural whole. Nakhl is the home of the Ya´Aruba Tribe that came into power in 1624 and ruled over Oman for a hundred and twenty years. Until the 12th century Nizwa was the capital of the Desert State of Oman. Even today this oasis city and trading metropolis has lost none of its former importance and the former residential complex of the massive fortress is open to the public. The fortress once fulfilled an important role in protecting the country's interior and now its lavish and well-restored rooms radiate tranquillity. The mighty Jabrin Fort is one of the most beautiful castles of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman, formerly the famous 'Land Of Incense'. Its massive, towering and eye-catching pewter walls date back to the 17th century. Until the middle of the twentieth century Abri had the reputation of being a centre for highwaymen and robbers, favoured for its good strategic location. The booty that came from plundered caravans and the settlements of various tribes was sold at auction in the souk: adventure straight from the pages of an Arabian fairy-tale!The Sultanate Of Oman is a treasure trove of rarities. Its twelve thousand year old history is visible throughout the entire country and the beauty of the mysterious Arabian Peninsula is a truly captivating experience.
