VPG-DVD-110 - VENICE The historic lagoon city of Venice stands on several islands joined together by a multitude of bridges, and a canal system in place of streets. The palaces that lie along the Grand Canal represent Venetian power and influence over the centuries. Gothic building artistry and Baroque affluence meet head-on in this grand and noble city which overflows with nostalgia. Less than an hour by boat from Venice and a visit to Burano, where fishing and lace-making prevail and Murano, famous for its glass-blowers. Three golden centuries of peace and prosperity made Venice into a glamorous, fairytale city like no other. 120 churches, 400 bridges -- this watery landscape is without equal. The 11th century Basilica Di San Marco, known as the 'Golden Basilica', is supported by 2,500 granite and marble pillars and, lined by buildings of many different eras, the Piazzi Di San Marco is surely one of the most famous squares in the world. And there's Carnival, too...a chance to wear a mask of Casanova, as well a good excuse for food and wine. Napoleon described Venice as 'Europe's most beautiful meeting place'. He was right!

VPG-DVD-196 - SALZBURG The Austrian city of Salzburg is a city of bishops as well as being the birthplace of world famous classical composer, Amadeus Mozart. The cathedral is located in the heart of the city, a Baroque building situated on the same site as the city's first church and now surrounded by several squares. Even today the cultural picture of the city on the Salzach is dominated by more than a hundred churches, castles and palaces. Hohensalzburg is the largest fully-preserved medieval fortress in Middle Europe. It is located one hundred and nineteen metres above the city and covers over thirty thousand square metres. It is like a small medieval town within itself with several buildings, courtyards and squares. Bastions with mighty towers were built at strategic points and together with powerful gates they make the fortress near impregnable. It is believed that during a siege the famous Salzburg Bull tricked the city's attackers into believing that the population had a good stock of food! Medieval Salzburg became a 'German Rome', an Italian looking city of Early Baroque design. The Getreide-Gasse is the main street in the centre of the city and in former times was called, Trabe-Gasse, a name that demonstrates the fact that the people there were always in a hurry! The city is a work of art within itself, an historic treasure chest of timeless beauty, full of southern flair and joie de vivre. Salzburg is most definitely a Baroque gem located in the very heart of Europe.

VPG-DVD-162 - MEXICO CITY Mexico City is a vivid metropolis and cosmopolitan city situated on a plateau in the central highlands at an altitude of 2, 286 metres - where the food is spicy and the Tequila flows freely! The city's fascinating history is reflected in both its art and architecture with age old charm, Indian roots and elegant buildings. Until the Spanish conquest the Templo Mayor was the setting of coronations and human sacrifice. The remains of the walls within which thousands of priests once lived are only a few steps from the buildings of the country's former Spanish conquerors. Construction of the country's largest cathedral, the Catedral Metropolitana, took two hundred and fifty years. The lower section is quite plain but the upper section is of Baroque and Neo-Classical design. Spanish administrative buildings and private houses in the heart of the city have replaced the temples of ancient Mexico and has resulted in a synthesis of both old and new architectural styles. An elevator ascends the Torre Latino America, an earthquake-proof tower that was built in 1958. A viewing platform provides a wonderful panoramic view that includes the Palacio De Bellas Artes and the Juarez Monument. Located fifty kilometres from Mexico City are the ancient remains of Teotihuacan that was once a centre of trade, art and ritual ceremonies. At its zenith in 500 A.D. it was as large as Rome and its Sun Pyramid is one of the greatest building achievements of ancient times. In 1988 Unesco attributed this complex as being 'one of the most important cultural centres of Mankind'. The author Pablo Neruda once said: 'No other land on Earth possesses such remarkable human profoundness than Mexico and its inhabitants'. For surprises, sights and history galore, Mexico has to be at the top of the list!

VPG-DVD-159 - HALIFAX Halifax is part of Canada's federal state of Nova Scotia. The peninsula has a population of 333,000 and it is the country's oldest British settlement yet has managed to retain all the charm and tranquillity of a small town. After Sydney, Halifax has the second largest harbour in the world and is one of the region's few harbours that is free from ice throughout the year. Lobsters, oysters, mussels and fish soup are but a few of the menu items that appear in the seafood restaurants of the Atlantic District. The Maritime Museum covers the history of the fishing industry on Canada's Atlantic coastline and also the history of navigation. Boats and small models illustrate the development of ship-building and include great seafarers and many remarkable exhibits. In 1917 two ships collided in Halifax Harbour. This led to an explosion that destroyed half the city when two thousand people perished and nine thousand were injured. In April 1912 the loss of the supposedly unsinkable passenger ship, the Titanic, was caused to its collision with an iceberg and it was from Halifax that the rescue ships embarked. The famous train, The Ocean, embarks from close to the harbour and its impressive stainless steel carriages date back to the 1950's. Halifax is an historic city set in a country with a vast and amazing landscape, a flamboyant metropolis that unites the past with the present day.

VPG-DVD-141 -BANGKOK Bangkok is synonymous with lively chaos but Thailand's great metropolis is also a compelling experience for the senses and a fascinating city full of contrast. We begin our sightseeing tour early in the morning about a hundred kilometres south west of the city centre at the floating market of Damnoen Saduak. Here, men and women travel on the canals by sampan amid a fertile landscape. Fruit, vegetables, flowers and all manner of goods are available and many of the boats have a kitchen in which fresh food is prepared to satisfy hearty appetites. Back in the city we visit some of its most important sights such as the Wat Phra Kaeo, The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the most important place of worship for the Thai people. Bangkok's most important landmark is also its most beautiful temple complex, a wonderful work of art comprising numerous splendid buildings. Today the Royal Grand Palace is used for national ceremonies and coronations. During the city's early years it was originally built as a residence for King Rama. The magnificent residence of the former god king shines out in all the typical splendour and elegance of the Far East, a Siamese heaven on Earth! In the 19th century Bangkok contained several canals known as 'Klongs' and most of them have subsequently been replaced with streets but a few have survived. Travelling on the canals is a wonderful way to take in the sights and for centuries life on the city's waterways has changed very little. Bangkok is a typical Asian city with much exotic hustle, bustle and excitement. It is truly a city that never sleeps!

Got up super early to drive to Arizona and the edge of Grand Canyon West to experience the Skywalk. Little did we know there was 14 miles of corrugated, dirt road!!! Within a few miles, the 'maintenance required' light turned on in my 2007 Yaris!! It was a gut wrenching, tooth rattling ride. At the Skywalk 'terminal' we endured more wind and dust, porta-potties and loud helicopters landing across the street. A bus (with transmission issues) drove us on more dirt roads to the actual Skywalk. Was the chance to walk 4,000 feet above the Grand Canyon floor worth $80 each? (plus the locker rental to put all the stuff you're not allowed to take on the glass) They do, however, give you cute booties to slip over your shoes and take a picture of you in them, for a mere $25 !! On a positive note, this side of the Grand Canyon is not part of the national park system, so there are no fences to keep you from the very edge. The Colorado River is close below winding through the beautiful red canyon. The food was actually good, but served on paper plates with plasticware. We were horrified to watch the wind blow them right into the canyon. For every positive, there was a negative... a 50/50, expensive experience. Oh, then it rained... and there was no shelter, walking through puddles and mud to get back to the car (then had another 14 miles of unpaved road to endure!)Song is "Six Feet from the Edge" by Creed

OTT-DVD-120 - On Tour... VIA DEL SALE Sightseeing Sicily's Salty CoastlineVIA DEL SALE Our journey begins in Marsala along a captivating route that travels the west coast of Sicily, the Via Del Sale or 'Salt Road'. Marsala derived its sonorous name from the Arabs who named it, Marsal Allah, 'God's Harbour'. However, the city's origins do not date back to the Arabs but to the earlier Phoenicians. Marsala became famous throughout the world due to its popular dessert wine of the same name which was developed at the end of the 18th century by an Englishman. Sicily's west coast contains many small and atmospheric fishing harbours where for thousands of years the seafood here has been a vital source of both nourishment and income. The Sicilians and Phoenicians were the first to appreciate the region between Marsala and Trapani and thus transformed each of these towns into a busy centre of trade. The Salines were once of great economic importance as they represented the foundation of wealth for the people of the Trapani region whose unique climate, scenery and geography have created the perfect conditions for the salt that is harvested here. Along the entire route of the Via Del Sale the region's historic windmills rise up proudly from the Salines. In this part of the world a boat trip is an ideal way to experience old canals and salt fields and to gain an overall impression of the production of salt. With their combination of ancient cultivated landscapes, beautiful coastal regions, traditional fishing villages and last but not least the historic cities of Marsala and Trapani, the Via Del Sale still shines out in its importance as one of the most unusual and striking roads in Sicily.

OTT-DVD-130 - Located in the centre of Taiwan is the legendary Alishan Forest Railway that is extremely popular with both railway enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The starting point of the fascinating journey into the rainforests and mountain world of Taiwan is Chiayi. When visiting Chiayi it is a must to visit the authentic marketplace in which there is just about everything. The markets have retained their original charm and whether simple or exotic the food is simply delicious. The Alishan Express has travelled between Chiayi and the mountain station of Chushan, since 1986. The route becomes steeper and steeper as the narrow gauge train travels tentatively into the higher regions and also into changing weather. Luxury is the last thing that can be expected on the Alishan Express as the carriages are extremely basic. The town of Alishan was named after the mountains of the same name and in recent years it has developed into one of the most popular tourist destinations in Taiwan. The Giant Trees Trail has become popular with walkers. It leads through an unusual forest that is full of thousands of years old trees, the "Trees Of Three Generations", ancient trees that have developed in a fascinating way. The first sunbeams mark the next day in the mountains when the legendary Alishan Forest Railway will bring with it new visitors who will experience the unique and wonderful mountain world of Alishan.

OTT-DVD-123 - The Shan State Express is the sonorous name of a unique train that travels to the north of Myanmar and to the legendary kingdom of the Shan. It passes through some of the most splendid scenery in South East Asia. We begin in the famous city of Mandalay that has a population of around a million and is a centre of Burmese art. Mandalay was founded around one hundred and fifty years ago and is therefore a relatively young metropolis. It owes its existence to an outstanding monarch, King Mindon who, wishing to escape from his kingdom's turbulent past, had a brand new royal city built. The journey on the Shan State Express begins early in the morning in Mandalay Train Station. Immediately after leaving the city we encounter wonderful scenery that is strongly influenced by a remarkable backdrop of mountains and unspoiled Nature. The railroad travels in a zigzag up the mountains which enables it to negotiate severe slopes that would otherwise be impossible for it to climb vertically. With the arrival of the railroad an increasing number of small farming villages developed most of which were populated by the Shan. Accounting for around eight point five per cent of the total population, the Shan are the largest ethnic minority in Myanmar. Their culture has been a major contribution to the historical development of South East Asia. At numerous railway stations Westerners are sometimes a little wary of the various snacks on offer. When a tempting skewer of food suddenly turns out to be a grilled locust the appetite can sometimes disappear within seconds! The continuing journey on the Shan State Express travels once more into the countryside. Picturesque hills line the route that is close to a famous militarily name, the Burma Road. The Shan State is truly one of the most colourful areas in South East Asia. Due to the extended train route from Mandalay to Lashio the time is hopefully not far away when the poverty of this region will be replaced by a new era of well deserved prosperity.

OTT-DVD-102 - On Tour... AFRICAN BALLOON SAFARI A Bird's Eye View Of AfricaAFRICAN BALLOON SAFARI The hectic pace of contemporary life can turn into a monotonous daily routine which never seems to end but, occasionally, the spirit of adventure comes to the fore, a burning desire to do something a little different. And what better than an airborne African safari in a hot air balloon! As the sun rises above the Earth, unique ever-changing horizons appear as Nature begins to stir and even the trees seem to delight in the dawning of a new day. Civilization appears to be a long way away and, from the airy heights of the balloon, nothing disturbs the balance of nature below. Everything is in perfect harmony as the sun illuminates each detail of the landscape and the balloon allows us to see nature at its most revealing. And soon one forgets various preconceived ideas about Africa: it is not just a land of scorched earth but one of lush green vegetation, an intense green that stamps itself indelibly into the memory. While the balloon's shadow drifts across the African terrain we stare down inquisitively at the ground below, the native inhabitants going about their daily tasks oblivious to our presence, hunting for food and rearing their young as they have done for thousands of years.
