NPM-DVD-135 - The stunning rock formations of The Valley Of Fire are located about sixty minutes drive from the USA's famous gambling city of Las Vegas. The impressive rock formations of the Valley Of Fire are the geological monuments of time immemorial, its deep canyons and caves far removed from civilisation. Here, isolation reigns supreme including silence and an infinity of calm. This is a realm of fantasy where it's possible to see countless fascinating images in the rock as the imagination runs riot and creates something new with each blink of the eye. The rocks are often between a hundred and two hundred metres high and during summer time the unyielding temperature reaches between 50° and 60° Celsius. Over the centuries, various rodents and reptiles have conquered this landscape including iguanas, lizards, rabbits as well as rattlesnakes and foxes, the roadrunner and the desert turtle. The fiery colours of the artistically weathered stone sculptures, rock domes and bridges continuously burn into the landscape. Some of the gigantic formations appear precarious and vulnerable and give the impression that they could collapse at any moment. In the early evening sun the Valley Of Fire is like a Martian landscape, the red colour of the rock being even brighter and more intense as the sky darkens dramatically, the clouds hanging darkly and mysteriously over the fire-like mountains. An exciting climax to this blazing spectacle of Nature.

I-40 begins in Barstow & follows some of Route 66 through the Mojave Desert. Along the route is Newberry Springs, most don't take much notice of the 117 sq mile community, at least not until 1988 with the release of the film "Bagdad Cafe". Now, people travel from all over the globe to sit & enjoy a meal at the small, homey Cafe. If you haven't seen the film & you like surreal kinds of comedy, check it out. It's a story of lost people finding themselves.Besides the Bagdad Cafe, there are two other things that came to mind as we traveled down old Route 66, John Steinbecks, "The Grapes of Wrath" - to a short lived TV show called "Route 66"...for all too short a time, I pretend I'm in that Corvette cruising down Route 66 back in her day...Route 66 began in 1926 and was decommissioned in 1985. The 2,448 miles of highway, started in Chicago, Illinois & passed through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona & ended almost to the ocean in California.Steinbeck referred to RT 66 as "The Mother Road" in 1930 & the name stuck. In 1960, "Route 66" was a hot TV show filmed on location all over the US, along the course of the famous highway. And then there's Nat King Cole singing "Get Your Kicks On Route 66". I can think of no other road that has been immortalized more - in song & clubs, organizations & even museums.******************If you'd really like to experience all that was & is of the Mother Road, check out this site:TOUR ROUTE 66 ON A HARLEY-DAVIDSON -http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/Motorcycle_Tours/route66_details.jsp?locale=en_US******************Yes, my 4-day Mother's Day weekend was wonderful! Four generations invaded Laughlin, Nevada to celebrate. 13 family members from Arizona & CA made the trek to the tri-state area, where the Mojave Desert meets the Colorado River. Ranging in age from 1 to 81!The Riverside Resort has just about everything, Although it is a gambling casino/hotel, it has many family friendly amenities - 34 lane bowling alley, six-plex movie theater, 2 arcades, 3 swimming pools and a special place for young ones called Kid Kastle. And I'm not even gonna try to count how many restaurants it has. :)On our return trip we found a little park next to the gas station, I couldn't resist climbing aboard the caboose & pretending I was on a train trip...haven't rode a train in years. :P

EXT-DVD-12 - LAS VEGAS Las Vegas, a grand metropolis of the gambling world, a mirage in the desert and with hotel casinos that are crowded day and night. There's the Luxor Hotel that was built at a cost of 400 million dollars and contains 2,526 rooms and an atrium that can accommodate nine jumbo jets. This is in stark contrast to the Excalibur Hotel that evokes King Arthur and his Round Table. Even the New York skyline is on full view and features Greenwich Village, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty -- and a screeching roller coaster ride above the residential quarters of New York! The exclusive Romanesque Caesar's Palace contains some of the finest and most elegant shops in the United States that epitomise the height of luxury, whereas the Mirage Hotel is set in a rocky landscape with waterfalls and lagoons and after sunset huge volcanoes erupt with a great rumbling and spew flames 30 metres into the air. No visit to Las Vegas is complete without a helicopter flight as its gives a full perspective of the fantastic ocean of flashing neon lights below and usually makes for the Stratosphere Tower and circles around it at breathtaking angles. Las Vegas...there's a lot more to it than this, including Treasure Island and regular battles between pirates and the English fleet. This city is like a huge multi-billion dollar film set where illusion and entertainment know no bounds.

Maria is a grandmother who is waiting for a jip replacement operation. She is also a drum and bass DJ and is attending the party along with her friend Harriet. Chris is a seasoned full moon DJ and Steve is moving to the island to open a restaurant (and, of course attend the March full moon party).Brian Kelly is the British consul in Bangkok. He and his team deal with a variety of problems affecting both British travellers in Thailand and British subjects who live in the country permanently. Among the many things he has had to deal with are lost passports, people arrested for drug offences and lads being drugged and robbed by prostitutes.Sheila's son Johnny, 38, is in Bangkok's Bang Kwang prison and is five years into a 50 year sentence for attempting to smuggle two-and-a-half kilos of heroin out of the country. Johnny took the drugs in a bid to pay off a debt to a Thai gambling ring and believes that one of the gang tipped the authorities off. 7DY-DVD-149 - Nevada is the heart of America's west, gateway to a wild and spacious wonderland that is full of amazing surprises and outrageous contradictions.Las Vegas appears like a mirage in the desert, awake night and day, THE entertainment capital of the world! Guarded by a sphinx that stretches its paws out toward the Strip, a pyramid looms above the desert paradise, The Luxor Hotel, one of many theme hotels in this incredible city. The MGM lion guards one of the largest hotels in the world with over five thousand rooms, whereas the Bellagio is a return to the exclusive nature of the casino hotels of the past: here, luxury is at its zenith - an investment of 1,8 billion dollars speaks for itself! The Valley Of Fire is located about 90 km. north east of Las Vegas and derived its name from bizarre, dark red sandstone rocks formed from both wind and rain. Good footpaths lead through the numerous canyons of the 150 million year old rock formations and while climbing over the huge plateaus images come to mind of the Anasazi Indians who once lived here 800 years ago. The fascinating scenery of Red Rock Canyon is easily reached from Las Vegas,a perfect scene of the old Wild West in stark contrast to the glittering world of the nearby city of gambling. A panoramic 20-kilometre roadway leads to the best observation points of this 330 km² nature reserve in the Mojave Desert. Lake Mead is a huge artificial lake amidst breathtaking Nature. The land that encircles it has been declared a National Recreation Area and it's home to a variety of unique plants as well as numerous animals. The authentic, three-deck Mississippi-style paddle steamer, the Desert Princess, is the ideal way to travel the lake in style to the legendary Hoover Dam. Only two and a half hours by car to the west of Las Vegas is the USA's most recent national park that extends to the opposite side of California's border, Death Valley! It was through here that thousands of pioneers took a short cut while journeying west, many of them perishing in the attempt. However, this region is most certainly the heart of the west - the wild wild west of Nevada!
