VPG-DVD-109 - BALI Bali - island of the gods and gateway to Paradise -- a relatively small island, east of Java across the Bali Strait. In recent years, luxurious hotel complexes have appeared, tastefully re-creating the island's ethnic traditions. The capital of Bali, Denpasar, is the commercial centre of the island with good shopping facilities and a fascinating variety of entertainment. Colourful dance and drama play an important part in the lives of the Bali people and almost every village has its own dance group, the favourite dance being the Barong. In the north of the island, the 1800 metre high Gunung Batur volcano is still active, its slopes covered in lava fields that extend deep into its crater. Hindu temples abound, the Kehen being one of the most beautiful terraced temples in Bali and the Pura Besakih, the most revered. As in ancient times, rice is still cultivated in the traditional way and ox and plough traverse the fields. Sun drenched beaches, cloud-kissed volcanoes, exquisite ethnic architecture and dreamy temples - it's no wonder that Bali is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in East Asia.

VPG-DVD-136 - CUBA Basking in the Caribbean sun, the island of Cuba lies between sun and socialism, rumba and revolution. Havana is the capital. In 1553, the Spanish conquerors designated Havana's harbour as a collection point for ships loaded with gold and silver from the new Spanish colonies and named the settlement, San Cristobal De La Habana. La Bodeguita Del Medio was once Hemmingway`s local and nowhere else is the 'Mojito' mixed better. Whether it be the Teatro Marti, the Old Tobacco Factory, the famous Bacardi House, or the Floridita Bar, everywhere there is a feeling of nostalgia. When the Daiquiri is served, one almost expects Fidel Castro to be sitting at the next table. Pinar Del Rio is a small but busy town in which the Red Star and portraits of Che Guevara are on display for all to see. In the old town, colourful houses with beautiful pillared corridors demonstrate the former wealth of the country's independent tobacco growers. A visit to a tobacco factory is a must. Cuba's cigars are world famous. Together with sugar, tobacco is the country's most important export. The oldest geological formation in Cuba are the Mogotes, well-weathered limestone peaks that, supported by pillars, once covered a large complex of caves. On seven manmade islands in the centre of the Cienaga De Zapata National Park, is the Indian village of Guama. This swampy nature reserve with its dense mangrove forest vegetation is an ideal sanctuary for many rare water birds. Legend has it that the Siboney Indians sunk all their possessions in the Laguna Del Tesoro to protect their gold from the Spaniards. No Cuban town has changed as little in two hundred years than that of Trinidad. In the 18th century, the city experienced great wealth and recognition due to the cultivation of sugar cane and the luxurious palaces and villas of the sugar barons still leave their mark on the city. Rich green tropical forests, tobacco country at the foot of mysterious mountain caves, humid tropical swamps, history, cigars and rum. Cuba is a colourful cocktail.

VPG-DVD-223 - AMMAN Amman is an historic metropolis in which ancient times and modern life meet face to face and where poverty and wealth live side by side. At first sight the city's ancient roots are not obvious, however, they date back to Biblical times. Abdoun is one of the city's modern city districts. For many years the city's former suburbs have been integrated into the megalopolis thus they now cover several additional hills. The slopes are crowded with modern, bright terraced houses and villas constructed of limestone and a modern infrastructure connects the residential districts with the old town at the foot of the hills. The King Abdullah Mosque is the largest and, due to its striking blue cupola, the most beautiful mosque in Amman. Although only completed in 1988 it is an important symbol of Islam. In 1900 the Ottoman Sultan ordered the construction of the Hedjaz Railroad that was designed to unite the Ottoman Empire that had begun to disintegrate as well as to transport Moslem pilgrims to Medina in the Hedjaz Mountains. The monarchs who ruled over this land have been many and both earthquakes and fire have devastated its buildings. But Amman has managed to survive and now continues to be a prosperous and vibrant metropolis.

OTT-DVD-119 - On Tour... ROAD FROM MANDALAY Mandalay To Pagan By BoatROAD FROM MANDALAY Our journey on the legendary Ayeyarwady River travels from Mandalay to Bagan. In the heart of Myanmar is the city of Mandalay that has a population of around a million and is the centre of Burmese artistry. The teaching of Buddhism was given the utmost priority thus Mandalay was designed according to Buddhist tradition and the Mahamuni Pagoda is now one of Myanmar's main pilgrimage destinations. Mingun's Hsinbyume Pagoda became the architectural model for a number of further pagodas that were built at the beginning of the nineteenth century at the time of King Bagyidaw. The legendary Mingun bell that weighs around a hundred tons and is the heaviest bell in the world, dates back to his predecessor, King Bodwapaya. At the beginning of the twentieth century the River Ayeyarwady boasted the largest fleet of steam boats in the world and even today a good number of them still remain. The importance of this river is highlighted by the many small temple buildings and sanctuaries that are situated along its river bank. Bagan has become well known for its overwhelming number of magnificent temple buildings that reflect the importance of the former kingdom. The most comfortable way to experience the wide spread sanctuaries of this first major Burmese city is to travel by ox carriage. Close to Nyaung U, the largest town on the Bagan Plains, the Shwezigon Pagoda once served as the inspiration of Burmese pagoda architecture. Temples, monasteries and a wonderful river, the journey from Mandalay to Bagan is a truly captivating and memorable experience.

SHF-DVD-IRAQ - Inside Iraq The Untold StoriesJoin me as I travel Iraq discovering the untold stories about the lives of the Iraqi people and the US soldiers. As a freelance filmmaker, I will take you on a unique personal journey uncovering stories that go beyond the headlines and politics.Tour a children's landmine hospital Visit remote villages with medical aid workers Drop in on illegal gun markets Walk the streets of Baghdad Get a tour of an Abrams tank Meet the soldiers who are finding creative solutions Witness a fire fight with Iraqi insurgents Ride along on night patrols in search of terroristsBelow are media and university reviews for Inside Iraq: The Untold Stories. MEDIA REVIEWS Those who are strongly for or against the Iraq war won't find their positions unequivocally supported by this film. Which is what makes it worth seeing. The Portland Tribune Shiley's film is an incredible guided tour of the Iraq that has yet to be adequately portrayed in mainstream American media. The result is an emotionally complex film that provides perspective on a complex reality that the government has worked to simplify, and the media has done little to clarify. Willamette Week (Portland, OR)-Movie Review It's a journey worth taking, but better him than you. He poked into things that journalists and others don't usually stop to examine, and he emerged with a highly personal travelogue that sheds a light on a complex and volatile situation. The Oregonian Living Section Shiley deserves credit for going to Iraq twice by himself (both times for a month) and trying to get stories he believes are worth showing. San Francisco Chronicle Shiley captures quite a lot of intriguing footage - and makes an important point about just how out of control the situation in Iraq has gotten..." San Francisco Bay Guardian What an amazing, powerful film and presentation. In essence, you provided us with a comprehensive behind the scenes tour, no snap-shot news reports, no "approved" footage, no political speak press conferences, just the simple and unfortunate reality that for everyone involved war is hell.. University of Wisconsin Shiley's footage presented stories of survival amidst extreme strife, the human stories that are not seen for the very most part on the nightly news. "...well attended and compelling..." Purdue University I think the questions you raised last night are part of the conversation we should all be having, and I think it is really admirable that you did the work to help us to have it. Keep it up! Harvard Alumni Association I applaud you for undertaking this difficult and creative work. I think this film has a future as an important source of information for citizens who are confused about the US 'project' in Iraq. Reed College, Portland, OR

GTR-DVD-1094 - Most of the buildings in Thailand's historic village of Mingun date back to the ambitious plans of King Bodawpaya who was convinced that he was an exemplary Hindu-Buddhist sovereign and thus did not permit any criticism of his architectural ideas. An example of his great love of architecture is the elegant white statue of the Settawya Pagoda that was built in 1811. Shining bright white and magnificent, the Hsinbyume Pagoda is located in the northern part of Mingun. The temple was built by a grandchild of Bodawpaya in 1816. Three years prior to his reign, the king dedicated the sacred building to his deceased, favourite and highly religious wife, Hsinbyume. The outstanding architecture of the pagoda is closely associated with Hindu-Buddhist cosmology and therefore with Mount Meru, the 'Centre of the World'. Seven wave-shaped terraces symbolize the mountains that surround Mount Meru and the Sulamani Palace that is located on its summit. However, Mingun is not only known for its impressive architecture: it is home to the world's heaviest bell that is six metres high and weighs more than 90 tons! GTR-DVD-1026 - Rising to a height of 1,300 metres, Kathmandu Valley lies at the foot of the Himalayas in the centre of the kingdom of Nepal, a city of temples and gods that was founded in the 10th century by King Gunakamadeva. For those of the Hindu faith, the temple area of Pashupatinath is the most holy place in Nepal and is an ancient place of worship for the god, Shiva. Established in the 12th century, Bhaktapur, the "City Of The Devoted", was until the end of the 15th century the capital of Kathmandu Valley. Located on a hill 3 kilometres to the west of Kathmandu is the valley's main landmark, the Holy Stupa of Swayambhunath. This large temple complex with its famous eyes serves as a reminder that due to the fact that Buddha was born in this country 2,500 years ago, Nepal is the true centre of Buddhism. Changu Narayan is the oldest sanctuary in Kathmandu Valley and is dedicated to the god Vishnu. It has been designated by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. The location of this holy sanctuary is ideal as its temple area is situated on the summit of a mountain ridge that provides an excellent view of the entire valley. Kathmandu Valley is Nepal's treasure house, along with all of its wonderful medieval Himalayan art and culture. GTR-DVD-1132 - The Chorherrenstift Neustift in the Southern Tyrol has a long and proud history. Its origins date back to the 12th century. The ancient domicile of the Royal Court of Neustift and a former hospice known as Engelsburg are located close to this monastic settlement. In 1189 Propst Konrad The Second Of Rodank ordered the construction of a sanctuary for pilgrims, the sick and the poor. The Collegiate's library has a remarkable collection of books and its captivating internal décor indicates the prosperity of a bygone time. Provost Leopold The First Of Zanna ordered the costly construction of the splendid library hall designed by architect Giuseppe Sartori of Trentino. The interior of the impressive Collegiate Church dates back to the 18th century. The building's decor is typical Late Baroque and its transition to Southern Germany's Rococo period. In addition to the elaborate creations of the Wessobrunner artists the ceiling frescos of the Augsburg artist, Matthäus Günther, are particularly noteworthy. Beyond the Collegiate there are marvellous fruit plantations and vineyards and The Turkish Tower is a reminder of the region's historic past. As with the entire area of the monastery the unique treasures of the Chorherrenstift Neustift have been preserved for posterity.
