VPG-DVD-214 - KÓS Kós is an historic island oasis beneath the Greek sun. Not the largest of the Dodekannissa Islands but certainly one of its most fascinating, with endless sandy beaches and an ancient heritage. The capital of the island is Chora Kós and for two thousand years it has been the nerve centre of the island. The city once suffered devastating earthquakes and the island was plagued by numerous invaders including the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, the Knights of St. John and finally, the Turks. The Platia Eleftherìas is the main square of today's Kós and contains the Archaeological Museum that is housed in a futuristic looking Italian building that dates back to the 1930's. Four kilometres from the city high in the Dikeos Mountains is one of the island's most important sights, the Asklipion, an ancient hospital and sanctuary. A winding road leads to the village of Kéfalos that from below looks like a small fortified complex. Its white houses and narrow alleys are free of traffic and it's as though time has stood still. Formerly a village of fishermen, agriculture is now the main source of income for the local people. Kéfalos has much historical significance as it was built on the ruins of the first capital of the island and Hypocrates was born here in 460 B.C. Antimáchia Castle was built in the 13th century by the Venetians and later expanded by the Knights Of St. John. Its mighty external walls are most impressive but only a few cisterns and two small chapels remain. Fascinating landscapes and the historic monuments of many époques make the Greek island of Kós a sparkling jewel of the Aegean.

OTT-DVD-120 - On Tour... VIA DEL SALE Sightseeing Sicily's Salty CoastlineVIA DEL SALE Our journey begins in Marsala along a captivating route that travels the west coast of Sicily, the Via Del Sale or 'Salt Road'. Marsala derived its sonorous name from the Arabs who named it, Marsal Allah, 'God's Harbour'. However, the city's origins do not date back to the Arabs but to the earlier Phoenicians. Marsala became famous throughout the world due to its popular dessert wine of the same name which was developed at the end of the 18th century by an Englishman. Sicily's west coast contains many small and atmospheric fishing harbours where for thousands of years the seafood here has been a vital source of both nourishment and income. The Sicilians and Phoenicians were the first to appreciate the region between Marsala and Trapani and thus transformed each of these towns into a busy centre of trade. The Salines were once of great economic importance as they represented the foundation of wealth for the people of the Trapani region whose unique climate, scenery and geography have created the perfect conditions for the salt that is harvested here. Along the entire route of the Via Del Sale the region's historic windmills rise up proudly from the Salines. In this part of the world a boat trip is an ideal way to experience old canals and salt fields and to gain an overall impression of the production of salt. With their combination of ancient cultivated landscapes, beautiful coastal regions, traditional fishing villages and last but not least the historic cities of Marsala and Trapani, the Via Del Sale still shines out in its importance as one of the most unusual and striking roads in Sicily.

GTR-DVD-1164 - In the history of Nepal the small Newar town of Kirtipur is unique. Even though the founding of the town dates back to the 12th century and the time of King Shivadev its true origin is probably far older as discoveries that date back to the Pre-Lichchavi epoch indicate that it could be one of the oldest settlements in the entire Kathmandu Valley. In the course of time, and particularly under the reign of the Malla Kings, Kirtipur developed into a small independent town with several beautiful temples and sanctuaries. The design of today's Buddhist Chilandeo Stupa dates back to the 16th century but the original building is attributed to the Indian King, ASHOKA. Under the reign of this legendary leader in the third century A.D., Buddhism began to spread across the length and breadth of the Indian subcontinent. The many years of Kirtipur's independence came to an end in 1482 when the town's inhabitants reluctantly came under the rule of the nearby city of Patan. Today the town of almost fifteen thousand inhabitants is divided into two areas. The eastern section is predominantly inhabited by Buddhists while the upper part of the town consists mainly of Hindus. However, both areas of the town are united by an idyllic rural atmosphere. Due to the declining economic situation in Kirtipur the town's cultural monuments appear to represent the last ray of hope for its inhabitants and a much needed possible source of future income. GTR-DVD-1242 - Just fourteen kilometres from Turku is the small, picturesque city of Naantali that is often referred to as Finland's 'Summer City'. Its origins, as well as the name, Naantali, are closely connected with a Birgitten monastery that was founded in 1443. Shortly after the creation of the monastery community of monks and nuns a settlement originated close by.For some years the inhabitants of this small city led a relatively frugal life as when the monastery closed so did the income that was derived from it. Naantali's second financial high season came in the eighteenth century when a professor discovered the healing power of the local spring water. The water of the Viluluoto Spring was thought to have miraculous powers and soon Naantali grew into a famous health resort. The picturesque buildings in the city's historic centre have been lovingly restored. Most of them date back to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In those days many of the buildings were farm houses as their owners earned their living from the land. There is a fascinating abundance of arts and crafts on sale in the many shops that are to be found in the atmospheric lanes of the old town.It is understandable why Naantali is known as Finland's 'Summer City' as well as being a treasure trove of medieval history.Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration.
