VPG-DVD-180 - TYROL Set within the magnificent Alps the Tyrol is a picturesque federal state in the west of Austria and is one of the most beautiful areas in Europe. It contains many ancient towns, monasteries and fortresses that highlight the region's history and its proud and hardy mountain people. Kitzbühel was once a prosperous mining town but today it is a world famous ski resort that is also popular in the summer months. The old town with its pretty middle class buildings that date back to the fifteenth century is a fine example of Austria's country's rural architecture. Around four thousand people live in the village of Wildschönau that is situated in a fascinating valley of the Kitzbüheler Alps that extend for some twenty four kilometres. Niederau is the entrance to the Wildschönau region and Oberau is the main village in a valley that features eye catching farm houses whose carved wooden balconies are decorated with splendid flowers. The Alpbach Tal leads into an untouched natural landscape where at an altitude of nine hundred and seventy five metres above sea level is the remote mountain village of Alpbach, the most beautiful village in the Tyrol. Kühtai is in the Stubaier Alps and can be reached from the Ötztal via the Sellraintal that travels at an altitude of around two thousand metres parallel to the Inntal. Each season of the year this popular Alpine holiday region attracts visitors from all over the world. The Tyrol is a "Land Of Mountains" and a natural treasure in the very heart of Europe!

VPG-DVD-228 - DAMASCUS Damascus is the capital of Syria and is a symbol of culture in the Near East. A hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast, the strategically located city was once the capital of the Umayyad. Cannons, the busts of various presidents and military vehicles are displayed in the large courtyard of the Takiyeh Mosque, an ancient Dervish monastery complex. Built in 1554 and designed by Ottoman master architect, Sinan, it also includes an adjoining inn for the numerous pilgrims who travelled to Mecca. Damascus has always been much prized: by the pharaohs and the Babylonian monarch, Nebukadnezar, and later, Alexander The Great. Then came Persian, Roman and Islamic emperors followed by the Crusaders and Mongols. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls. It was from here that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Romans built a fort here that was constantly extended with impressive walls and towers and located directly outside the city wall, the River Barada was also of strategic importance. Although the Mongols destroyed the inner buildings, the fortress walls survived. The Suq is an important part of every Islamic city, a market that originated in ancient times. Thousands of shops in numerous interconnected lanes form the commercial heart of Damascus. In the Gold Suq everything glitters, bracelets, rings and even a large variety of kitchen utensils. Damascus has for thousands of years been a place desired by the powerful. Yet it has managed to survive and is still the most beautiful capital city in the Near East.

VPG-DVD-141 -BANGKOK Bangkok is synonymous with lively chaos but Thailand's great metropolis is also a compelling experience for the senses and a fascinating city full of contrast. We begin our sightseeing tour early in the morning about a hundred kilometres south west of the city centre at the floating market of Damnoen Saduak. Here, men and women travel on the canals by sampan amid a fertile landscape. Fruit, vegetables, flowers and all manner of goods are available and many of the boats have a kitchen in which fresh food is prepared to satisfy hearty appetites. Back in the city we visit some of its most important sights such as the Wat Phra Kaeo, The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the most important place of worship for the Thai people. Bangkok's most important landmark is also its most beautiful temple complex, a wonderful work of art comprising numerous splendid buildings. Today the Royal Grand Palace is used for national ceremonies and coronations. During the city's early years it was originally built as a residence for King Rama. The magnificent residence of the former god king shines out in all the typical splendour and elegance of the Far East, a Siamese heaven on Earth! In the 19th century Bangkok contained several canals known as 'Klongs' and most of them have subsequently been replaced with streets but a few have survived. Travelling on the canals is a wonderful way to take in the sights and for centuries life on the city's waterways has changed very little. Bangkok is a typical Asian city with much exotic hustle, bustle and excitement. It is truly a city that never sleeps!

Please note: the crew rearranged my home office to make it look like a survivalist's bunker. That's not what it normally looks like around here. The crew filmed me about 2 weeks after Hurricane Katrina at which time I had just recieved a cache of supplies and had them sitting in my kitchen. They took those supplies and moved them over to where I keep my books and papers, things you would normally expect from somebody in my line of work. The fact that I was wearing a green sweater when they came here only helped convey an atmosphere of "bunker-chic." -Matt http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net

MTW-DVD-107 - A frenetic neon mirage in the desert: that's the Las Vegas Strip! A pyramid looms up from this desert haven, guarded by a sphinx. An excursion in ancient Egypt? No, it's the Luxor Hotel, one of the many magnificent illusions in this amazing city. Behind the façade of a medieval castle, the Excalibur Resort contains more than 4000 rooms in a mind-boggling blend of the Arthurian legend and spectacular kitsch. The casino is entered via the Brooklyn Bridge and with an intense screeching and whirling a double loop roller coaster winds its way over the heads of spectators and through the residential quarters of New York. The Venetian is a superlative hotel and with its 6,600 spacious suites it is the largest hotel in the world. The rooms are furnished according to Venetian tradition and original paintings decorate the ceilings. In the Eiffel Tower there's a gourmet restaurant with a fabulous view over the Strip plus a section of the Paris Opera House and next to it a magnificent replica of the Arc De Triomphe. This flashing galaxy of multi-coloured neon soon makes one forget the dusty rocky desert landscape which surrounds this fascinating city which is synonymous with entertainment, amusement and just about every dollar dream that is waiting to be turned into reality!

GTR-DVD-1015 - REAL ALCÁZAR DE SEVILLA Andalusia, Spain The royal palace of Real Alcázar is located in Seville, the capital of the autonomous Spanish province of Andalusia. Dating back to the 8th century and formerly the oldest citadel built by the Moors, the palace was built on the ruins of a Roman fortress when the Almohaden transformed it into a palace. Following the conquest of the city, the Christian kings and most notably, Don Pedro, employed the best Moorish builders and artists, the Mudejaren. In the Hall of the Envoys the wall tiles contain many Moorish designs and it was here that the country's rulers received envoys from abroad. The furnishings and household goods of the royal private rooms were collected from around most of the known world. The Gala Dining Room is particularly outstanding. It contains precious wall carpets and crystal chandeliers from Murano and a huge table dominates almost the entire length of the room. Moorish arcades lead to the Andalusian Gardens that were planted in place of the original kitchen gardens and many of the courtyards feature a small water fountain that adds to the calm atmosphere. Real Alcázar is the most beautiful example of Mudejar design, a fairy tale from the 'One Thousand And One Nights'! GTR-DVD-1207 - Since 1981 the Baroque castle of Drottningholm, situated twelve kilometres from Stockholm, has been the official residence of the Swedish royal family. Within the beautiful Drottningholm Park is an exceptional architectural jewel, Kina Slott, a picturesque Chinese pleasure palace that is one of the most captivating examples of the exotic world of the Far East as visualised by Sweden's former aristocracy. After the Swedish East India Company first arrived in China in 1733 everything Chinese was highly fashionable. In each corner of Europe numerous buildings were suddenly inspired by Chinese art and architecture thus many tea-houses, pavilions and tiny pleasure palaces became in vogue. The pavilion still contains several valuable silk wallpapers, lacquered umbrellas and other exotic examples. An exquisite collection of Chinese porcelain is one of the most celebrated exhibits as porcelain played a vital role in the dining hall where food arrived in quite spectacular manner - the table rose up directly from the kitchen! Considering such ingenuity it is understandable that Kina Slott continues to enjoy much popularity right up to the present day. GTR-DVD-1211 - Lush green surrounds the historic buildings of the remote farm settlement of Glaumbaer deep in the north of Iceland. Glaumbaer's turf houses were built in the late 19th century but the origin of the farm dates back far longer. Many of its stone structures were built by the Vikings who lived in the region during the 11th century. As was common in most of Iceland's former farming communities, Glaumbaer contained several buildings that were located around a central building. The 'badstofa' served as a working, living and sleeping space and was also the location of the communal kitchen, one of the most popular places to be in the harsh cold of winter. In addition to the important archaeological finds that have recently been made, the former ancient community of farmers and Vikings that once lived here no doubt still contains many a secret yet to be discovered. GTR-DVD-1154 - The Mosteiro De Alcobaça is a massive, medieval monastery in Alcobaça and one of the most important historical monuments in Portugal. The creative influence of the monastery's fraternity is still evident and its interior is one of the most beautiful examples of Gothic Cistercian design.King Afonso Henriques promised the construction of the Cistercian monastery in 1147 following a decisive victory over the Moors. He kept his word and six years after his military triumph the first construction work on the monastery began. The majority of the buildings were completed in 1222 although the monastery's kitchen and its impressive chimney were added in the 18th century. The Cloister was built in the 15th century at the time of King Dinis. Due to the vow of silence this building was known as the silent cloister. When the religious fraternities were disbanded in 1834 the Mosteiro De Alcobaça was abandoned by its monks but its treasures and much of its age old splendour have been preserved to the present day.Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. GTR-DVD-1120 - During ancient times the Cyclades island of Delos was the flourishing centre of Greek culture. Greece's most extensive archaeological site covers the entire island and since 1872 has been frequented by countless archaeologists. Greek legend has it that this now-deserted island was the birthplace of the gods Apollo and Artemis. Offering wonderful ocean views, the amphitheatre dates back to the third century B.C. and accommodated around 5500 spectators. Not all of the island's temples were dedicated to Greek gods and a particularly well-preserved sanctuary of the so-called 'foreign gods' formed part of a beautiful temple that was dedicated to the Egyptian goddess, Isis. The lower plateaus on the western side of Kithos Hill contain numerous important cult sites. One of these sanctuaries was the centre of the Hera Cult, the Archaic Heraion, that established itself in 500 B.C. Beautifully restored mosaics with the Phoenician symbol of the goddess Tanith decorate one of the most impressively furnished houses on the island, the House Of Dolphins. The island's ruins indicate its former cosmopolitan nature with its Egyptian, Italian, Phoenician and Jewish traders but due to the destruction of its buildings and the creation of new centres of trade elsewhere, Delos gradually became deserted.
