VPG-DVD-217 - WACHAU Our journey across Wachau begins in Stein, a town district of Krems, one of the oldest cultivated landscapes in Austria. The sole 'Gateway Into The Wachau' is a unique region of the Danube between Krems-Stein and Melk. A total of a hundred and thirteen houses encapsulate the medieval city that was built along the Steiner Road on the banks of the Danube. VPG-DVD-173 - VANCOUVER Vancouver is the third largest city in Canada and one of the most beautiful on the American continent, a dynamic metropolis set in a beautiful location with a temperate climate throughout the year. Close to the harbour area the city's skyscrapers have proliferated in recent years. The capital of the southwestern province of British Columbia has developed into an economic centre of renown. The city's oldest buildings were built less than a hundred years ago because the former wooden houses of old Vancouver were destroyed by fire. Several buildings reflect the origin of their inhabitants and are similar to those in the United States and Europe. Inspired by the Colosseum in Rome, an elegant structure of pink stone and glass, Canada Place, is located in the busy centre of the new harbour district and is also the city's most recent landmark. Close by is Harbour Centre, a modern skyscraper complex with a shopping centre and a Skylift to the top floor. A glass elevator transports visitors to a one hundred and sixty seven-metre high observation platform where the view across the city, harbour and bay is overwhelming. The exciting Skytrain is the city's most popular means of transport, an ultra-modern train built on posts that zig zags its way through the city. Each of the city's most important destinations are easily accessible and it has reduced the city's traffic problems considerably. For the World Exhibition of 1986, on the edge of Chinatown gardeners and craftsmen from Suzhou in China established Canada's first classical Chinese garden, the Doctor Sun Yat Sen Garden. Its ponds, bridges and small pavilions are similar to those in China, masterpieces of Far Eastern garden design. Everything in Vancouver is youthful, attractive and dynamic, a place in which Canadian politeness unites with the Pacific way of life!

VPG-DVD-126 - STOCKHOLM Stockholm is a city that floats on water: the 'Venice Of The North' was built on fourteen islands. Gamla Stan, or 'Old Town', is the name of the city's three central islands that are linked by numerous bridges. Its ambience is that of the Middle Ages and small and mysterious alleys and beautiful buildings that date back to the 7th century characterise the life of the traders who once lived there. The old town's most dominant building is the royal castle of Kunglia Slottet. Larger than London's Buckingham Palace it contains six hundred and eight rooms. The Stadshuset is one of the city's landmarks and was designed in Medieval style and with a tower that is almost 106 metres tall. The most important artists of the time were engaged in the creation of the Blue Hall in which the Noble Prize ceremony now takes place each year. Those who appreciate museums will not be disappointed by Stockholm as it boasts more than fifty! The National Museum located on the Strömmen Canal contains countless works of art. Due to the passion for art of various of Sweden's royal family and also generous public donations, the museum has a truly outstanding collection of French paintings that date back to the 18th century. Six kilometres south of Stockholm is a cemetery that has been designated as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, the Skogskyrkogarden, the final resting place for many of Stockholm's past inhabitants and also some of its most famous, including Greta Garbo. This extraordinary complex took thirty years to build and is unique in the world. Since 1998 this centuries-old Hanse city has also been the cultural capital of Europe. This city of the Vikings is a true architectural gem!

It became Russia's capital city and remained so until 1918 when Lenin and his revolutionary Bolshevik government moved to Moscow. Today it is a living monument to the lives and times of Russia's Imperial Tsars The Winter Palace contains Russia's largest museum, the Eremitage, which houses more than two and a half million exhibits. Since Peter the Great, Russian rulers purchased many major works of art, but it was Catherine The Great who acquired complete collections from the auction houses of Europe. The Admiralty, with its needle-shaped, gold-plated tower, is one of the city's most famous landmarks, its grand architecture depicting the emergence of Russia as a naval power and the marvellous Isaaks Cathedral has the third largest dome in the world. Twenty four thousand tree stumps were used for its foundations and it can accommodate a congregation of 14,000. The Peter And Paul Cathedral was the burial place of the Tsars and it contains the marble coffin of Peter the Great. The most colourful church in Russia is the Resurrection Of Christ Cathedral which was built on the orders of Tsar Alexander the Third on land where, in 1881, his father, Alexander the Second, had been killed by a bomb planted by a revolutionary group. Russian Baroque and Russian Classicism were established in St. Petersburg -- city of monumental events, outstanding architecture and an Imperial metropolis on the grand scale.

VPG-DVD-205 - REYKJAVIK Reykjavik is Iceland`s gateway to the world and is one of the smallest metropolises on Earth. Just over a hundred thousand people live in this the northernmost of all cities that is sometimes referred to as Iceland's 'Smokey Bay'. The Hallgrims Kirkja is one of Reykjavik's main landmarks, a Neo Gothic church that was built between 1945 and 1986. It was named after a famous religious minister and poet of the 17th century, Hallgímur Pétursson. Both its design and large dimensions are impressive. Tjörnin is located in the centre of the city, a wonderful small lake surrounded by spacious parks and the new City Hall is also located there. Krists Kirkja is the city's main Catholic church and in 1989 the Pope preached within its walls marking the first visit of the Pontificate to Iceland. Narrow elegant bridges span across the splendid ponds of the Botanical Garden, a popular destination for the inhabitants of Reykjavik. However, small forests of conifers are the only real sign of nature on this remote and barren island. Chimneys are a rarity in Reykjavik. The majority of its houses are heated by geothermic water. Indeed, many of its pavements and streets are heated, a convenient asset that saves much money on snow clearance and makes life a lot easier for the local population. In Iceland the summer months are bright but in spring and autumn there are long periods when there is little daylight. July is the time of the famous midnight sun and thanks to the Gulf Stream the island enjoys a relatively temperate climate with cool summers and quite mild winters. Historic sights, hi-tech buildings and the charm of a small town. All this is Reykjavik, a remote metropolis built on fire and ice!

VPG-DVD-169 - PROVENCE Marseille is the most important city in Provence.and is situated on the south coast of France. From a distance, one of Marseille's main landmarks rises high above the harbour: the seafarers' church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Garde. With abundant internal furnishings, Byzantine arches, golden mosaics and numerous votives it is a splendid structure inspired by Byzantine Romanic design. The most impressive religious building in Marseille is a fortified monastery church that dates back to the 5th century, the mighty Abbaye Saint Victor. Deep down in the rock is an Early Christian crypt and a number of stone sarcophaguses that contain the remains of various holy martyrs that date back to the Roman persecution of the Christians. A boat trip from Cassis leads to one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe, Les Calanques, a unique nature reserve where shining white limestone cliffs plunge more than four hundred metres into the deep blue sea and extend for twenty kilometres. Sur Le Pont D'Avignon is a world famous French song that is familiar to both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the bridge of the Pont Saint Bénézet but it is more likely that the people here once danced under the bridge, as that is the location of its bars! A place of radiant light and sweet aromas with villages that nestle in the rocks like eagles'nests and with cities that have an historic past. Provence is indeed a captivating land full of fascinating contrasts.

VPG-DVD-138 - MONACO Located between Italy and France on the Côte D`Azur, the Principality of Monaco is renowned for its high society, Grand Prix and scandal and the cost of a square metre of land is the most expensive in the world. After the Vatican, it is the smallest yet most unique sovereign state in the world. Monte Carlo's Casino is undoubtedly the principality's most famous landmark. Designed by the architect of the Paris Opera House, Charles Garnier, this superb casino was built in 1878. With the opening of the casino, this previously relatively poor mini State, developed into the famous principality it is today. La Condamine is the harbour district, with its typical French atmosphere and overlooking apartments it connects Monaco Ville with Monte Carlo. Luxury yachts anchor in the harbour throughout the year and travel from all over the world to visit this much sought after tax haven and exclusive casino paradise. On the large rock plateau of Le Roche, Monaco Ville is crowned by its royal palace that was built in 1215 on a former mighty Genoese fortress. The Neo Roman Monaco Cathedral was built in around 1897. The large interior is dominated by the main altar that was designed by Louis Brea. This is also the location of the grave of ex-Hollywood actress, Princess Grace Of Monaco who died tragically in a car accident. Monaco is certainly a place of wealth and prosperity. But the sunshine and its wonderful location on the Côte D`Azur makes it a fascinating place to visit.

VPG-DVD-163 - MARSEILLE Marseille is the oldest city in France and its largest commercial harbour in the Mediterranean. It is believed that in 600 B.C. travellers from the Greek town of Phokis founded the autonomous town of 'Massalia'. In the Middle Ages the city's main harbour was used by the crusaders to embark on their journey to Jerusalem and it rivalled those of the maritime republics of Genoa, Pisa and Venice. One of Marseille's main landmarks rises high above the harbour, the seafarers' church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Garde. It towers above the city like a fortress and on its bell tower is a gilded ten metre high figure of the Virgin Mary. Several hundred yachts of all sizes crowd into the old harbour where there is often little room for the comings and goings of modern day sailors. It is difficult to imagine that once near-starving slaves were forced to use their last ounce of strength to row their master's galleys into the harbour. Modern harbour complexes require a great deal of space as is well demonstrated by Marseille's new harbour and after Rotterdam it is the second largest in Europe. Two mighty fortresses overlook the harbour: the northern Fort Saint-Jean is the oldest and was used by the Order Of The Knights Of Malta; the Fort Saint Nicolas stands guard over the southern side of the narrow harbour entrance and was built in the 17th century. The tiny island of Chateau D`If was made famous due to a novel by Alexander Dumas, The Count Of Monte Christo. A small museum features many items related to this classic novel and visitors can search for the hole in the wall through which Edmond Dantès is said to have entered the Abbé Faria. A boat trip from Cassis leads to one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe: Les Calanques a unique nature reserve. Shining white limestone cliffs plunge more than four hundred metres into the deep blue sea and extend for twenty kilometres. Marseille - France's wonderful gateway to Africa!

VPG-DVD-201 - MALTA Homer called Malta, 'The Centre Of The Sea'. This island situated in the heart of the Mediterranean and was important to both the orient and the occident. After the Phoenicians and the Punier came the Romans followed by the Arabs and the Normans: but it was the Knights Of Malta who made the most indelible mark here. Valletta is also known as The City Of Palaces and is Malta's main city, full of historic buildings, and in 1530 the Order of the Knights of Malta moved its main residence to this part of the island. The St. John´s Co-Cathedral was built in1577 by Gerolama Cassar as a monastic church of the Order Of The Knights Of Malta and its splendid interior was financed by the profits gained from hostilities mounted by the Order against Muslim trading ships. Mosta is situated in the middle of the island, a busy small town with a famous landmark, Mosta Cathedral, a huge sacred building whose mighty dome can be seen from almost anywhere on the island. The rugged southern coast of Malta contains small fjord-like features and numerous grottos, the most spectacular of which is the Blue Grotto. From the village of Wied-Iz-Zurrieq a steep path leads down to the sea and when the weather is suitable experienced guides take passengers on small boats through a narrow canyon into the grotto where the colour of the water is truly fascinating. One of the prettiest villages on Gozo is Gharb whose Baroque parish church dominates the main square. Here it is as though time really has stood still. With seven thousand years of history Malta is a colourful and beautiful island with tales of the sea and noble knights: a tantalising pearl set in the very heart of the Mediterranean.

The City Of London contains the Tower, an historic landmark with a remarkable history. A mighty mediaeval fortress with thirteen towers that throughout its nine hundred years has served many functions and from the Middle Ages was a heavily fortified prison. After the medieval St. Paul`s Cathedral was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1666, Christopher Wren was ordered to re-build it with a dome. During the thirty-six years of its construction its design was frequently altered until finally a wonderful masterpiece of church architecture was created. The Monument is the city's tallest freestanding stone column and a reminder of the Great Fire Of London that destroyed four fifths of the city. In four days and nights more than thirteen thousand buildings were destroyed and the Monument was built on the site of the bakery in which the fire began. Since the reign of Queen Victoria, Buckingham Palace has served as London's royal residence. A garden of mulberry trees once grew on the site of today's palace and the Duke Of Buckingham subsequently added a simple brick built residence. Around sixty years later George II purchased the site for his wife and George IV eventually began to design an extensive palace complex. The highlight of any holiday in London must be the largest Ferris wheel in the world, the London Eye. Situated on the banks of the Thames it rises high into the sky opposite the Houses Of Parliament and Big Ben. The former centre of the largest empire in the world, London is still a city of superlatives that attracts millions of visitors each year.
