VPG-DVD-107 - HAWAII The Hawaiian Islands are located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and form the 50th state of the USA. In the south east of the island of O'Ahu, Honolulu is a modern town and the starting point for most journeys. It also contains the Iolani Palace - once the residence of King David Kalakana - a magnificent Victorian structure in the centre of Honolulu and the only royal palace in the United States. In Pearl Harbour, a museum commemorates the events of the seventh of December 1941 when most of the American Pacific fleet was destroyed by the Japanese. In winter, the world's best surfers collect on Sunset Beach, attracted by spectacular waves, some of which reach as high as the tallest church steeples. On the island of Kaua'i, the Wailua is Hawaii's only navigable river and it flows through some of the exciting locations which were used for Jurassic Park, Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Blue Hawaii. Two volcanoes dominate the extraordinary island of Maui, which also features sandy beaches, green pastures, dense jungle and a bleak lunar-like landscape. Hawaii -- a paradise of Pacific islands!

VPG-DVD-137 - RABAT Rabat is the capital of Morocco and also its royal seat of power. The main residence of King Mohammed the Sixth is a fascinating modern metropolis. Along with its monumental works of art the fourth oldest of the Makhzen cities is also one of Morocco's most important. Cafés and workshops reflect daily life and most of the city's souks are divided into specialised areas with items such as leather goods, blankets and carpets for sale: and with a little haggling it's possible to purchase quality handicrafts at a very modest price! The Kasbah Des Oudaias was built by Yacoub El Mansour in the 12th century. It is located at Rabat's most elevated point and is like a village within the city. The eight metre high wall once protected the Kasbah and its inhabitants and the fortress is inhabited to the present day. Barred windows create an Andalusian ambience. The Kasbah is one of the most popular though most expensive addresses in Rabat. Throughout the centuries the Moroccan coast was dominated by pirates but the might of European colonialists put an end to their dubious activities. The mausoleum of Mohammed the 5th was built in 1967 and the tomb complex contains a mosque, a mausoleum and a small memorial that contains images of the king. At the end of the 12th century Yacoub El Mansour constructed the largest mosque in the Maghreb. At a height of sixty metres its minaret was taller than any other in North Africa. Four hundred columns support the prayer room and it has fourteen gates. Rabat is a fascinating capital city and royal residence. An exotic world that lies between both occident and orient.

VPG-DVD-132 - PARIS Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. First established by the Celts, next used strategically by the Romans, then it served the extravagant lifestyle of the Sun King, Louis the Fourteenth until it became a hotbed of Revolution. Les Champs Elysees is surely one of the most beautiful avenues in the world. With wide boulevards, shady corners, ambient street cafes and classic Parisian buildings that are decorated with flowers. Since 1873, the Palais De L`Elysee has been the residence of the French President. At the beginning of the 17th century, Madame De Pompadour lived there and during the Revolution the liberated people cavorted in its luxurious rooms. Through a small triumphal arch decorated with scenes of Napoleon's victorious army, there is the garden created by Leotre, the Jardin Des Tuileries. A bridge and a fountain are the focal points of this popular park created in typical French style. A modern glass pyramid and a fountain decorate the courtyard of the former Louvre Palace, which since the time of the Revolution has been transformed into a museum that contains the famous Louvre art gallery. Its collection of remarkable historic treasures and superb art collection make it one of the world's most famous museums. with Leonardo Da Vinci´s masterpiece, the Mona Lisa, taking pride of place. Situated on a small island on the River Seine is the Cathedral Of Notre Dame, the 'Mother Church Of The Nation'. Built on the foundations of a Roman temple and commissioned by the bishops Maurice and Eudes De Sully, it took almost 200 years to build this Gothic masterpiece. Built at the end of the 19th century as a symbol of national revival, Montmartre's Sacre Coeur has the appearance of a white, fairy-tale palace with 237 steps that lead up to the main entrance of this extraordinary structure. Its Byzantine architecture and five cupolas are reminiscent of the Marcus Dome in Venice. Of course, there are the dizzy heights of the Eiffel Tower and a great deal more. Paris is a wonderful festival of the senses!

VPG-DVD-101 - NEW ORLEANS Fun-filled metropolis at the mouth of the Mississippi, New Orleans is a cultural melting pot and the birth place of jazz. In 1682, the Frenchman, Robert Cavalier, declared this Mississippi region to be French territory and named it, 'La Louisiana'. However, Napoleon later accepted $15,000,000 from President Jefferson and in 1840 it was the fourth largest city in the USA. The Garden District is a sought-after residential area in which there is an abundance of magnolia trees, palms, shrubs and flowers, and the city's largest graveyard, the Metairie Cemetery, has over 7,000 graves and an array of spectacular mausoleums which astound the eye. Gumbo Soup, Jambalaya, Hurricane Cocktails and Dixie Beer are just a few of the traditional refreshments on offer in this carefree, non-stop city, yet, just outside, there are the swampy bayous alive with many exotic species, and the Oak Valley Plantations whose great wealth derived from the sugar cane industry prior to the American Civil War and part of which is reminiscent of some of the scenery from Hollywood's, Gone With The Wind. In the 19th Century, New Orleans was North American capital of the Voodoo cult and today it is a city of unique atmospheres, flavours, contrasts and Mardi Gras: an extraordinary city!

VPG-DVD-167 - HONOLULU Honolulu Airport is world famous for the novel way in which it welcomes its visitors. A sweetly scented floral chain is placed around the neck of all those who arrive and the friendly smiles of the local people are irresistible. Normal routine is cast aside and dreams become reality. The Hawaiian Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean and are the 50th State of the United States of America. The island of Oahu is situated in the centre of the archipelago. The modern city of Honolulu is the capital of both Oahu and all the other islands and it is also the starting point of numerous excursions. King David Kalakana had the Iolani Palace built, a magnificent Victorian structure situated in the centre of Honolulu and the only royal palace in the USA. The Nuuanu Pali Valley is of great importance in Hawaiian history. It was there that a decisive battle took place when King Kamehameh arrived from Maui and triumphantly drove the troops of the O´Ahu chief into the mountains, a battle that gave rise to the political union of the Hawaiian Islands. Close to Honolulu, Pearl Harbour was the scene of a major military tragedy. During an unexpected attack practically the whole of the American Pacific fleet was bombed by the Japanese and destroyed. The attack on the U.S. naval base was the ultimate reason that the United states eventually took part in the Second World War. In winter the most dedicated surfers collect on Sunset Beach to experience the world's most sought-after waves some of which are as high as the tallest church steeples and between Kawela Bay and Haleiwa each winter the best surfers in the world meet for the Surfing World Championships. 'Aloha!' is Hawaii's magical word. It means 'Welcome', 'Good-Bye' and also 'Love'. Life is so simple in paradise!

VPG-DVD-190 - DELHI Delhi is the political and administrative capital of India and the largest democracy in the world, a melting pot of both culture and religion plus a constantly expanding metropolis that has more than ten million inhabitants. Built on the site of twelve former cities it is the gateway to India and has been the country's centre of power for almost a thousand years. Jama Masjid, the Friday Mosque, is one of old Delhi's main landmarks, bequeathed to the city by the Mogul king, Shah Jahan. Its huge inner courtyard accommodates twenty thousand. Raj Ghat is a memorial to the country's former political leaders and once contained the funeral pyres of Mahatma Ghandi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Ghandi. Rajpath is the name of an impressive three hundred metre wide road flanked by green swathes and luxuriant fountains, remnants of British Imperial rule. The National Rail Museum contains an interesting collection of nostalgic locomotives, carriages and memorabilia and for those who do not wish to risk a journey on India's present day over-packed trains, the museum provides the perfect opportunity to imagine how it must have been on the Indian railroads of old. The Safdar-Jang Mausoleum was built in the final years of Mogul rule and is an architectural monument of this golden era. It contains each design element of this epoch, with a terrace-like substructure, painted stucco and a dome. No other city in this huge and diverse country demonstrates the dramatic history of India with all the intensity of colour as Delhi.

TMT-DVD-120 - PALMYRA The ancient city of Palmyra is located in the Tadmur Oasis in the very heart of the Syrian savannah. Surrounded by arid desert it was once a proud and pulsating trading metropolis and everywhere can be seen relics of a bygone age that was full of myth and mystique. The influence of the legendary oasis city grew due to it having been regarded as a province of Rome. The Romans soon recognized the strategic importance of Palmyra as it was a vital centre of trade in the Near East. Palmyra's fine buildings such as its Amphitheatre were typical of its impressive architecture. Most of the Tetrapylon has been restored. It towers high above the ancient ruins and the Great Colonnade was once the main street of the historic metropolis. Beyond the city walls in the Valley Of Tombs the mystic atmosphere of the former caravan city becomes apparent. Several well preserved mausoleums give the surreal looking desert landscape a truly ghostly atmosphere. The architecture of these multi-floored burial places are unique in the world. The view from the Arabian fortress extends across the picturesque ruins of the city to the endless horizons of the desert. The oasis and ancient remains of Palmyra look almost surreal as if in a dream yet the old ruins and the mighty fortress really do exist in very tangible and resplendent form.

NPM-DVD-126 - The largest volcanic crater in the world, Haleakalä, is the main tourist attraction on Maui, one of the Hawaiian islands and a fascinating natural monument and protected area. Several steep bends lead up the volcanic mountain and the dense green jungle is a wonderful sight to start the day. Haleakaläh has been a national park since 1916. Covering 1,890 square kilometres, Maui is the second largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago. More than eighty thousand people live on the island that in 1959 became the fiftieth state in the USA. The archipelago is formed by more than twenty islands which form a chain that stretches for 600 km. Geographically, Maui consists of two parts. It was formed by two volcanoes, the lava from which flowed into a valley and almost united the island as a complete mass. The island has therefore been partially divided. Thus, Maui is also known as Valley Island. Deservedly, this enchanting island has the reputation of being, 'Maui No Ka Oi', that means 'Maui Is The Most Beautiful!' and, without a doubt, it is indeed a truly remarkable Paradise on Earth!

Today Cesky Krumlov is a lively town and one of the most beautiful in the Czech Republic. Although the history of settlement in this area dates back to the Bronze Age the high season of Bohemian Krummau can be traced back to the Middle Ages. At that time the Germans as well as the Czechs influenced the cultural and social life of the charming old town. The magnificence of the local architecture is all around and brings to life the glorious ambience of bygone times. The mighty cylindrical tower of Lower Castle has surveyed the town since the end of the 16th century and is typical of Bohemian Krummau architecture. In those days the lords of the castle kept bears within the castle's large moat and even now they continue to be a special and somewhat unusual attraction. The interior of the town's Renaissance castle highlights the wealth of its former noble inhabitants and contains the famous Golden Eggenbergische Carriage. Each evening the town's centuries old buildings gleam romantically in the evening light while large quantities of world famous Bohemian beer are enjoyed in the local hostelries. GTR-DVD-1098 - A fertile plain beneath the mountains of Djebel Zerhoun surrounds Volubilis, the most important ancient Roman excavation site in Morocco. The former administration seat of the Roman African province of Mauretania Tingitana contained all the necessary attributes of a highly developed city. The ruins date back to the first and third centuries A.D., a golden time in this region. The production of oil and grain made the city prosper and during its golden years the city covered an area of around 40 hectares. The Roman settlement remained free from invasion for many years and was therefore able to develop without interruption from hostile forces. As Volubilis became the most important Roman trading centre and governmental seat in Morocco, an area devoted entirely to villas was developed to the North East of the Decumanus Maximus Road. The high standard of living enjoyed in those times is demonstrated by the richly detailed architecture of this area. An allegorical picture of the four seasons is a frequently recurring motif in the floor mosaics of the splendid villas that are located along the Decumanus Maximus Road. Another fine residence, the House Of Hercules, depicts the legendary deeds of this hero of antiquity. Even today, almost seventeen hundred years after the first impressive mosaics were laid within the villas, their colours are amazingly fresh and vibrant. GTR-DVD-1138 - Tunis is the capital of Tunisia and the political, commercial and cultural centre of the country: the Paris of North Africa and a metropolis with a long history. The centre of the city is the Medina, the Arabic old town. Surrounded by the market streets of the souks towers the large mosque of El Zitouna. Apart from the Sidi Oqba of Kairouan, this noble building is the most important religious sanctuary in Tunisia. The central market quarter dates back to the Hafsidic and Early Christian period and the leisurely ambience of the Moorish coffee houses still exists today. The tall, octagonal minaret of the Sidi Youssef Mosque is the earliest Syric building style in Tunisia. Next to the mosque are the securely guarded government buildings that incorporate the architectural styles of the old town. In the labyrinth of souks there is a tiny square with red-green pillars, the former slave market in which human captives were sold for profit. The 18th century mausoleum of Tourbet El Bey contains the tombs of the Husseiniden Dynasty, its stucco walls and marble pillars highlight the influence of Italian Renaissance. Even today the Medina of Tunis enchants all those who experience it and it is one of the oldest and most constantly populated areas of the Mediterranean that is as evocative as an oriental fairytale.
