Up to the beginning of the 20th century the city was a trading centre for both the north of Morocco and the Sahara and the monarchs of various dynasties made Marrakesh their capital city. The large souks of Marrakesh's Medina are divided into numerous sections and stock just about everything known to Man! In spite of the city's apparent calm there is much activity and the traffic is surprisingly well disciplined. Marrakesh has the largest souks in Morocco. As well as shoes and clothing they stock all the necessities of life and of course bargaining and haggling are the norm! Daily life in the souks is dominated by trade. They are a vital meeting place and trading centre for the farmers of the High Atlas. Those who wish to experience Moroccan daily life can do so here and a stroll through the narrow alleys taking in the city's sounds and aromas explains far more than any travel guide. Place Jemaa El-Fna is the 'Square Of The Beheaded' and is Marrakesh's most famous attraction with snake charmers, musicians and storytellers. In 2001 the Square Of The Beheaded was designated by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. Built in 1158, the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosquee is the symbol of the city. The seventy seven metre tall sandstone minaret served as the model for the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat and most of it was built by Spanish prisoners of war. Marrakesh is an historic bridge that unites both urban and nomadic cultures - an exotic gateway to Africa and a captivating window to Europe!

VPG-DVD-121 - TORONTO Toronto is a sensational city. Canada's 'secret' capital: boomtown, show town and financial metropolis, clean, safe and with five million inhabitants. Gigantic skyscrapers and with a frenetic lifestyle, Toronto is where many Canadian banks and multi-national companies have their palatial offices of steel and glass built in what was once a waterfront wilderness. The old City Hall was built in 1899 in Victorian style and consists mainly of sandstone. Its Venetian clock tower faces an array of modern skyscrapers and almost opposite is the futuristic looking new City Hall, a symbol of the city's cosmopolitan flair. It's easy to become disorientated in Toronto's Underground City. Most of this subterranean complex extends beneath the financial district and is the largest of its type in the world with countless shops, restaurants and subway stations. An endless network of corridors and passages connects these vast shopping centres and offices to the Central Business District. Since 1975 the city has possessed a unique monument, the Canadian National Tower or, the C.N.Tower. At a speed of six metres a second four external elevators zoom to the top of the building and it takes only fifty-eight seconds to reach the Skypod platform. The massive Skydome stadium is home to the Blue Jays baseball team. The huge pitch contains a hundred and six rolls of light green turf and is illuminated by more than seven hundred two thousand watt spotlights. The building is multi-functional and has a movable dome that can be opened and closed as necessary depending upon the weather. Niagara Falls, although extremely touristy, is an unforgettable experience. For the adventurous there are bridges and platforms close to the raging waters and the roar of the mighty torrent can be heard from a great distance while the awe-inspiring view of the waterfalls make it easy to forget the surrounding hustle and bustle of fellow sightseers. The Indian meeting place of bygone times has been transformed into a huge city that is a true gem among Canada's other great cities. Toronto is without a doubt the most multicultural city in the world!

But today the city is ruled by modern-thinkin communists and the Yangzi Delta is not only China's largest port but also its new shining star of capitalism. The Oriental Pearl Tower is a mighty four hundred and sixty-eight metre high television tower that contains an entertainment centre, futuristic luxury hotel, fine restaurant and offers the most superb views across the city. In the centre of the city's labyrinth-like shopping alleys a zigzag bridge extends across a small pond to a famous tea house. The bridge was designed thus in order to fend off evil spirits who, it was believed, could walk only in a straight line! Located in the countryside, Suzhou is above all famous for its gardens. The 'Garden Of The Policy Of The Common People' is one of China's four most famous gardens. The complex was built between 1522 and 1566 at the command of an important mandarin and designed according to his wishes. South of Suzhou is Zhou Zhuang that is said to have been the first water village in China. A journey on its canals is certainly worthwhile as the surrounding area is covered with thousands of canals and rivers and many villages in the area are only accessible by boat. Shanghai and its surrounding area has now freed itself from its early growing pains and from the restrictions imposed by Chairman Mao and today enjoys the rich rewards of capitalism.

The local inhabitants live in harmony with nature and the six thousand five hundred Sami people have managed to preserve their unique landscape right up until the present day. Rovaniemi is a modern and lively main town in northern Finland and the gateway to Lapland. The famous Arktikum Museum provides a comprehensive insight into life in the Artic Circle. Two large rivers, the Ounasjoki and the Kemijoki, meet in Rovaniemi from were lumberjacks and gold prospectors once embarked upon their pioneering adventures. Today the city is a centre of tourism. Pajakyla is the home of Santa Claus and is open throughout the year. In the Arctic Circle eight kilometres north of the city is a special attraction that attracts six hundred thousand visitors each year: several tiny log cabins contain Santa's work rooms and a number of his helpers in traditional Lap costume offer a variety of colourful arts and crafts. In Lapland each season of the year has a special charm. The summer months are warm, in autumn the leaves shine out in golden yellow and in winter the landscape is covered with snow and ice. The hilly landscape of the large Pallas Ounastunturi National Park is located in the north west, close to the Swedish border and its treeless slopes make it one of the most popular winter ski resorts in Finland. Lapland is a land of countless myths and legends where remoteness, adventure and romance have managed to survive and where the power of nature is still very much alive.

Five old windmills dominate the picturesque bay of Mykonos. In earlier times the town's millers supplied flour to soldiers, merchants and even pirates. A special attraction is the district of Little Venice, the style of its buildings serving as a reminder of when the Venetians took possession of the island. Delos is known as the Pompeii of the Aegean and its deserted temples, public buildings, houses and streets still conjure up the atmosphere of this once-flourishing cultural and trading town. On Naxos, the largest of the Greek islands, the Greek gods have created a masterpiece of nature with bubbling springs and gently-flowing streams, colourful fields and fertile valleys and an abundance of water, fruit and vegetables. Santorini is the most southerly of the Cyclades islands and the location of the mythical lost island of Atlantis. It's also a breathtaking island paradise of rock, lava, sea and light. The unique proportions of Santorini are due to a natural disaster that had a devastating effect when over 3,500 years ago a volcanic eruption sank most of the island beneath the sea. Was it not the Greek god, Poseidon, who threw a handful of rocks onto the seabed that took root and created the Cyclades? It is no wonder that these dreamy islands are a place of myth and legend!

The mystical looking rocks seem to protect this place that has the most rainfall in what is an already rainy region and above which the rain clouds are often alive with both thunder and lightning. Iceland is a fascinating world of water, fire and ice and full of breathtaking beauty and overwhelming contrast. It is one of the last natural paradises on Earth.

King David Kalakana had the Iolani Palace built, a magnificent Victorian structure situated in the centre of Honolulu and the only royal palace in the USA. The Nuuanu Pali Valley is of great importance in Hawaiian history. It was there that a decisive battle took place when King Kamehameh arrived from Maui and triumphantly drove the troops of the O´Ahu chief into the mountains, a battle that gave rise to the political union of the Hawaiian Islands. Close to Honolulu, Pearl Harbour was the scene of a major military tragedy. During an unexpected attack practically the whole of the American Pacific fleet was bombed by the Japanese and destroyed. The attack on the U.S. naval base was the ultimate reason that the United states eventually took part in the Second World War. In winter the most dedicated surfers collect on Sunset Beach to experience the world's most sought-after waves some of which are as high as the tallest church steeples and between Kawela Bay and Haleiwa each winter the best surfers in the world meet for the Surfing World Championships. 'Aloha!' is Hawaii's magical word. It means 'Welcome', 'Good-Bye' and also 'Love'. Life is so simple in paradise!

Hungary was once a kingdom but then came the Turks who were followed by the Habsburgs and Maria Theresia who became 'Queen of Hungary'. The historic centre of Budapest is dominated by its noble castle that towers above the banks of the Danube. A one hundred metre long cable railway that dates back to 1870 is both a practical and fascinating way to ascend the hill to the castle. Each day the area around the castle, the Fischerbastel, that has never played a military role, attracts large numbers of tourists. Margareten Island is set amid the Danube and is Budapest's vast entertainment area. It was at its most colourful during the Romantic period of the 18th and 19th centuries when it was a meeting place for poets, philosophers and artists. A small hotel was built for its creative community and it became an island of artists and dreamers. In the area of the city called Pest there is a splendid building with a mighty cupola, The Parliament, the city's main landmark and an important part of Hungary's historic past. In 1867 Buda and Pest were acknowledged by the Emperor as the seat of the Hungarian government with its own parliament. The building resembles London's Houses of Parliament. Hungary is a fusion of two different cultural regions as indicated by its architecture and lifestyle and it is very much where the order of the Occident unites with the calmness of the Orient.

As its most important commercial and financial centre, the city on the Charles River has always played an historic role and was the cradle of Independence. In the centre of Boston, Copley Square features the Trinity Church, which contrasts with the modern Hancock Tower that dominates the skyline. Park Street Church was where, in 1829, William Garrison gave his first anti-slavery speech. In the adjacent Granary Burial Ground some of America's most famous sons are buried, such as John Hancock, Samuel Adams and Paul Revere. Beacon Hill has hardly changed over the past 150 years, an architectural gem with narrow, winding cobbled streets and even today the wrought ironwork of its balconies and banisters indicate that this is one of Boston's most sought after areas. In front of the Old South Meeting House, in 1729 thousands of Boston's inhabitants protested against the English king and the taxes that he had imposed upon them. The Old State House is Boston's oldest public building. In 1776, it was here that the Declaration of Independence was read out for the first time. The Plimouth Plantation is a reconstruction of the Pilgrim Fathers' original settlement and is one of the jewels of the many living museums in the USA. To the south west of Boston there is the museum town of Old Sturbridge Village in which historic buildings from all over the country have been lovingly replicated.. Village inhabitants in historical costumes walk and talk in wide open spaces and act out the scenes of daily life as it was two centuries ago. New England is the traditional face of America and the heart of America's past.

VPG-DVD-223 - AMMAN Amman is an historic metropolis in which ancient times and modern life meet face to face and where poverty and wealth live side by side. At first sight the city's ancient roots are not obvious, however, they date back to Biblical times. Abdoun is one of the city's modern city districts. For many years the city's former suburbs have been integrated into the megalopolis thus they now cover several additional hills. The slopes are crowded with modern, bright terraced houses and villas constructed of limestone and a modern infrastructure connects the residential districts with the old town at the foot of the hills. The King Abdullah Mosque is the largest and, due to its striking blue cupola, the most beautiful mosque in Amman. Although only completed in 1988 it is an important symbol of Islam. In 1900 the Ottoman Sultan ordered the construction of the Hedjaz Railroad that was designed to unite the Ottoman Empire that had begun to disintegrate as well as to transport Moslem pilgrims to Medina in the Hedjaz Mountains. The monarchs who ruled over this land have been many and both earthquakes and fire have devastated its buildings. But Amman has managed to survive and now continues to be a prosperous and vibrant metropolis.
