In august of 07. I spent some time in Hervey bay, on a boat, stalking the whales that visit the area. Having spent the winter in the Great Barrier reef, giving birth to their calves, they journey down the coast of Australia returning to the Antarctic for the summer. VPG-DVD-197 - SHAN STATE North of Burma's central plains is the exotic and fascinating Shan State, a beautiful landscape in South East Asia located on the eastern side of Myanmar. Once forty Shan monarchs ruled there but they lived in hostile times as Burmese kings and Chinese warlords fought against them to gain control of their fertile land. We begin our journey at Inlay Lake. The magical beauty of this body of water has attracted and fascinated people since time immemorial and this unique lake is home to the Intha people. The next leg of the journey leads to a far more tranquil section of the lake that features floating gardens that are around a hundred metres long and two metres wide and consist of a densely interwoven carpet of water hyancinths. Mandalay, 'The City Of Art', is located in the centre of Shan State. It was founded in 1857 and up until the British conquered it in 1885 it was the capital of the kingdom of Burma. The Mahamuni Pagoda is the centre of worship and is also where the Mahamuni Buddha is kept, the country's most highly worshipped Buddha statue. Around twelve kilometres beyond Hsipaw is the legendary Bagyo Pagoda. Surrounded by a magnificent wall it is thought that the sanctuary is more than seven hundred years old. An important festival takes place each year around Tabaung, the time of the full moon in February and March, and is the highlight of the town's cultural calendar. The Shan people in the north of Myanmar have most certainly retained their cultural heritage and Shan State is an exotic combination of both nature and culture and a land of beauty and joie de vivre!

NPM-DVD-137 - The arid landscape of the Namib Naukluft Park in the heart of Namibia seems to be endless and it is the fourth largest nature reserve in the world. In the northern region, between the river valleys of the Swakop and Kuiseb, vast fields of scree cover the majority of this fifty thousand square kilometre conservation area. The remote world of stone and rock seems so strange and unreal that one of the valleys in this region is called Moon Valley. Further into the Namib Desert and the colours of the surrounding landscape grow more intense. It is as though both earth and sky are competing against each other to see who shines brightest. The majestic and world famous blazing red dunes of Sossusvlei tower more than three hundred metres over the landscape. In this extremely hot, arid and treacherous ocean of sand even the trees seem to have given up their struggle for survival. Most of the waterholes have dried out and now this region's wildlife must prepare for yet another period of interminable draught. The impressive yet strangely formed Kokerboom, or Quiver Tree, is in reality not a tree at all but a high growing variety of the aloe plant. The name of the plant comes from the bushmen who made quivers for their arrows from its large branches. The Kokerboom, acacias and various low-growing varieties of bush make up the characteristic vegetation of the region. At the end of the day the fiery sky seems to emulate the warm red colours of the mighty sand dunes and amid the beautiful scenery the magnificent world of the Namib Naukluft Park gradually merges with the intense glow of sunset.

Our feet well and truly on the ground, most of us will never get closer to space than this truly impressive, historic yet futuristic, space center.
