VPG-DVD-121 - TORONTO Toronto is a sensational city. Canada's 'secret' capital: boomtown, show town and financial metropolis, clean, safe and with five million inhabitants. Gigantic skyscrapers and with a frenetic lifestyle, Toronto is where many Canadian banks and multi-national companies have their palatial offices of steel and glass built in what was once a waterfront wilderness. The old City Hall was built in 1899 in Victorian style and consists mainly of sandstone. Its Venetian clock tower faces an array of modern skyscrapers and almost opposite is the futuristic looking new City Hall, a symbol of the city's cosmopolitan flair. It's easy to become disorientated in Toronto's Underground City. Most of this subterranean complex extends beneath the financial district and is the largest of its type in the world with countless shops, restaurants and subway stations. An endless network of corridors and passages connects these vast shopping centres and offices to the Central Business District. Since 1975 the city has possessed a unique monument, the Canadian National Tower or, the C.N.Tower. At a speed of six metres a second four external elevators zoom to the top of the building and it takes only fifty-eight seconds to reach the Skypod platform. The massive Skydome stadium is home to the Blue Jays baseball team. The huge pitch contains a hundred and six rolls of light green turf and is illuminated by more than seven hundred two thousand watt spotlights. The building is multi-functional and has a movable dome that can be opened and closed as necessary depending upon the weather. Niagara Falls, although extremely touristy, is an unforgettable experience. For the adventurous there are bridges and platforms close to the raging waters and the roar of the mighty torrent can be heard from a great distance while the awe-inspiring view of the waterfalls make it easy to forget the surrounding hustle and bustle of fellow sightseers. The Indian meeting place of bygone times has been transformed into a huge city that is a true gem among Canada's other great cities. Toronto is without a doubt the most multicultural city in the world!

VPG-DVD-209 - SIEM REAP Siem Reap is a relatively small town three hundred and fifteen kilometres north of Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia. Here, growing tourism has created a boomtown because Siem Reap is close to Angkor, the ancient capital of a huge and mysterious jungle realm. The Temples Of Angkor are the remains of various religious buildings that were built by more then ten kings of the Khmer realm between the 7th and 16th centuries A.D. The gigantic roots of kapok trees cling to the moss-covered walls of the temple complex and everything is dominated by the encroachment of nature. The monastery was once home to five thousand including more than two thousand monks and over six hundred female dancers who played an important part in the sacred rituals and ceremonies of that time. The fishermen on the tributaries of the Tonle Sap live peacefully together in large families. They are not particularly interested in commerce or trade as their lives are dominated by Buddhism. In the Middle Ages Angkor was the largest city in the world. The majestic silence amid the temples and dense jungle vegetation seems to highlight Angkor's immortal splendour and its magnificent contribution to Asian history and culture.

VPG-DVD-161 - SAN DIEGO For some, San Diego - a coastal city with a wonderful climate - is California's southernmost city, for others it is the northernmost city in Mexico. It is not quite as predictable as other US metropolises and even the skyline promises something different. Palm trees, colourful flowerbeds and wonderful sandy beaches are typical of Southern California and are an open invitation to surfing and relaxation. The exclusivity of the beaches exudes an aura of luxurious living and the grand houses of the Coronado district are among the city's most prestigious. The long distance trains that travel through Amtrak Station connect San Diego with many other Californian cities and also with the bordering city of Santa Fe. The red tram, known as the San Diego Trolley, leaves from here and travels south to the Mexican border. Everywhere there are blossoming flowers and spouting fountains and the magnificence of this colourful garden city makes it easy to forget the arid terrain of the nearby desert. There's also Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo and Sea World. With its many attractions and close proximity to Mexico, San Diego is an unforgettable city that's a very special kind of tourist metropolis!

TMT-DVD-117 - ALHAMBRA Built during the 13th and 14th centuries, the Alhambra is a group of buildings that overlook Granada. The finest example of Moorish architecture, it was a magnificent citadel for the Moorish kings of Spain. When the Moors were expelled from Spain the citadel was mutilated but in the 19th century it was restored to its former glory. Close by is the Palacio Del Generalife, the summer residence of the Moorish rulers the grounds of which contain fabulous gardens. The Moors were a nomadic North African people consisting mainly of Arabs and Berbers. They invaded Spain in the 8th century and were expelled from it in the early 17th century, prior to which most had been exterminated during the Spanish Inquisition. Yet their contribution to Spain in terms of medicine, art, architecture and science, was immeasurable. A people of commerce, learning, imagination and panache who, like so many of their kind throughout history, were eventually persecuted to near extinction.

TMT-DVD-105 - TAJ MAHAL At the beginning of the 17th century, the Grand Mogul, Shahdshahan, erected the marble sepulchre, the Taj Mahal, as a tribute to, and in grief for, his favourite wife, known as 'the darling of the palace'. This action led to an upturn in both the economy and culture of the country and appears to have been an act of reparation, bearing in mind that the Mogul was a direct descendant of the Mogul, Timur, known as Tamerlan the Great, who was infamous for his indescribable cruelty. The magnificence of the sepulchre is still a reminder of the noble act performed by the Grand Mogul who thus through the centuries expiated a great injustice. Thus, the Taj Mahal is a magnificent wonder of the world that was originally dedicated to love...a wonder of the world for which there is still no explanation!

TMT-DVD-102 - STONEHENGE In the south of England, amidst the hills of Wiltshire, surrounded by woodland and mature trees, stands the most significant prehistoric example of Megalithic culture, Stonehenge. Looking almost as it must have done more than 4000 years ago at the time of the New Stone Age and Bronze Age, here Man created a shrine for a deity dedicated to a religion based upon nature and sun worship. Like gates built by Titans, these gigantic stones take us back to the Dark Ages.

TMT-DVD-122 - SABRATHA Northwest Libya is home to many ancient cultures. Tripolitania is an ancient landscape that derived its name from three old cities, Oea, Leptis Magna and Sabratha. Accounts of the tribes of Tripolitania were written down by Ancient Greek historian, Herodot, who lived in the fifth century B.C. and according to his texts it was the Phoenicians who founded the three cities at the beginning of the eighth century B.C. The ancient coastal city of Sabratha has a truly magical atmosphere. The front of a theatre, the Pulpitum, features a symbolic image of Sabratha and Rome. For more than a thousand years the remains of the Roman theatre lay hidden beneath the ground. Italian archaeologists excavated the site in the 1920's and discovered Sabratha's impressive architectural remains. The facade of the theatre has since been re-built and is today the most beautiful architectural example of Ancient Rome. The Punic Tomb Tower was built in the second century B.C. and features a large variety of symbolic figures that are full of mystique. The building is decorated with scenes that feature Heracles who strangles a Nemaeic Lion and the Egyptian god of fertility, Bes, who fends off two further lions, plus other scenes that are no longer recognisable. Following the conquest of the former Roman province and the spread of Islam, Sabratha lost its importance and its inhabitants moved to other areas. Sabratha fell into oblivion.

TMT-DVD-104 - POMPEII On August 24th in 79 A.D. a massive volcanic eruption destroyed the Roman city of Pompeii when millions of tons of lava instantly petrified the bodies of 2000 of its inhabitants. Pompeii is the incarnation of a civilization that was destroyed by this natural disaster. Some of its underground corridors were accidentally discovered in 1594 but serious scientific excavation did not begin until the 18th century. Even today, more than one third of the city remains concealed beneath volcanic rock. Because of the airtight conditions beneath the lava, Pompeii is the most well preserved ancient city in the world with perfectly preserved streets and buildings that provide detailed information of the former living conditions, trade, commerce and art of Roman times. The lively city attempted to compete with Rome and offered its visitors and guests abundant luxury and diverse entertainments and the interiors of the buildings with their magnificent reliefs indicate the wealth and high living standards of Pompeii's elite.

TMT-DVD-118 - PETRA Hidden amid the Wadi Musa, the Valley Of Moses in South Jordan, is one of the most fascinating and mysterious ruins on Earth, the legendary rock city of Petra. A desert tribe, the Nabateans, once established a settlement in the shelter of the rocks and founded a splendid royal city that has survived to the present day. For many centuries their sanctuaries and dwellings that had been carved into the rock fell into oblivion until they were later rediscovered. Several ancient paths lead through one of the most fascinating metropolis' of ancient times and a seemingly hostile desert world of rock yet full of the fascinating remains a legendary people. Before the Nabateans built this splendid rock city within the desert they first had to organise a supply of water. With great technical skill they succeeded in diverting the water from distant springs along the walls of narrow canyons and into the city. Even today Petra has a unique and magical atmosphere and both the local Bedouin tribes as well as those who visit cannot fail but be impressed by it. The legendary rock town of the Nabateans provides a remarkable insight into a bygone epoch of the Near East that continues to be full of historic mystique.

TMT-DVD-120 - PALMYRA The ancient city of Palmyra is located in the Tadmur Oasis in the very heart of the Syrian savannah. Surrounded by arid desert it was once a proud and pulsating trading metropolis and everywhere can be seen relics of a bygone age that was full of myth and mystique. The influence of the legendary oasis city grew due to it having been regarded as a province of Rome. The Romans soon recognized the strategic importance of Palmyra as it was a vital centre of trade in the Near East. Palmyra's fine buildings such as its Amphitheatre were typical of its impressive architecture. Most of the Tetrapylon has been restored. It towers high above the ancient ruins and the Great Colonnade was once the main street of the historic metropolis. Beyond the city walls in the Valley Of Tombs the mystic atmosphere of the former caravan city becomes apparent. Several well preserved mausoleums give the surreal looking desert landscape a truly ghostly atmosphere. The architecture of these multi-floored burial places are unique in the world. The view from the Arabian fortress extends across the picturesque ruins of the city to the endless horizons of the desert. The oasis and ancient remains of Palmyra look almost surreal as if in a dream yet the old ruins and the mighty fortress really do exist in very tangible and resplendent form.

TMT-DVD-111 - MYSTIC VENICE The historic lagoon city of Venice stands on several islands joined together by a multitude of bridges and a canal system in place of streets. The palaces that lie along the Grand Canal represent Venetian power and influence over the centuries. Gothic building artistry and Baroque affluence meet head-on in this grand and noble city that overflows with nostalgia. It is during the winter months that Venice is particularly fascinating, when carnival masks blend perfectly with the architecture of the lagoon city as though on a magnificent stage which has been created by an ingenious set designer. Everything is play, disguise and admiration. Masks are closely associated with the city's history and were first mentioned in a law which was passed in 1268. As in earlier times, St. Marks Square is the centre of today's carnival. Under the five domes of St. Marks Cathedral, a colourful spectacle develops when masked forms stroll under the arches and arcades of the city's grand buildings. The Carnival is a unique catwalk on which vanity can be unashamedly displayed. Where just a simple cardboard mask is not good enough and where the inspiration for dressing up, disguise and enchantment is essential. Here, everyone is a performer looking for the admiration of the crowd. At carnival time only a lack of imagination is forbidden. Nowhere else do mystique and majesty come together to create such atmospheric and harmonious forms as here in this legendary and intriguing lagoon city.
