VPG-DVD-213 - ICELAND Iceland is an island born of fire and ice with white glaciers, black beaches and green meadows: a land of geysers, waterfalls and volcanoes. Reykjavik is set amid a fascinating landscape, a metropolis on the outermost edge of civilisation and the world's northernmost capital city. A little outside the city is an attraction that is a meeting place for one and all, The Blue Lagoon, the largest bath tub in the world! The mineral water it contains has a temperature of forty degrees centigrade and the milky-blue pool has been proven to possess beneficial healing qualities. Southeast of The Blue Lagoon is Hveragerdi that is set within an idyllic valley. Due to its protected location and numerous thermal springs, in 1929 a garden city originated there and within its many greenhouses grow vegetables, fruit and exotic flowers. The small coastal picturesque village of Vik with its few houses and around three hundred inhabitants is located in a valley close to a bay. The mystical looking rocks seem to protect this place that has the most rainfall in what is an already rainy region and above which the rain clouds are often alive with both thunder and lightning. Iceland is a fascinating world of water, fire and ice and full of breathtaking beauty and overwhelming contrast. It is one of the last natural paradises on Earth.

VPG-DVD-202 BANEPA VALLEY Twenty-six kilometres south east of Kathmandu is the Banepa Valley, a captivating place that allures with its beautiful landscape and village sanctuaries. Legend has it that a terrible demon, Chanda, once ruled over the valley. The local people pleaded with Parvati, the daughter of the Himalayas, to free them from the monster. Parvati overpowered the demon and was given the name, Chadeshvari, Mistress of the Chanda. Thus she became one of the maternal Newar deities. Eight kilometres south of Banepa and located between two rivers is the Newar settlement of Panauti. It is the most important historic village in the Valley. In the 13th century Paunauti was the capital of the autonomous kingdom of Banepa and the village has retained its historic authenticity. The village is full of rural calm. Only in September is the idyll disturbed by the 'Carriage Festival'. The shops contain all essential household goods. The transport of both goods and humans is usually done by lorry. They ply their way up and down relentlessly along the demanding terrain. The daily market also contains a good selection of products where fresh fruit and vegetables are in abundance. Life in Nepal is dominated by religion. It is a combination of magical, mystical and spiritual ideas that are closely interwoven. Buddhists and Hindus share many of the sanctuaries as they are very tolerant and not divided as in other religions. Each year the fascinating Banepa Valley set amid the Himalayas allures thousands of visitors with its impressive mountain landscape, ancient culture and the deep mystical religious faith of its people that is still very much alive today.

TMT-DVD-119 - BAGAN Bagan is a famous royal city in today's Myanmar that is full of myth and legend. In the days of the legendary Birman monarchy the metropolis covered an area of forty square kilometres and today the numerous majestic buildings of Bagan provide an unforgettable insight into its history. The development of the city was not only influenced by logical planning but was also designed according to religious and mystical ideals and was eventually built to reflect the structure of the Buddhist cosmos. The impressive temple complexes were designed to be a "paradise on earth", a place that lay between Earth and the realm of the gods. As the first Burmese kingdom expanded the former territories of the Mon Tribe were gradually conquered. However, militarily the Mon Tribe proved to be inferior to that of the rising realm of Bagan. The Burmese troops captured not only many precious cultural and religious treasures but also more than thirty thousand prisoners from the capital of the Mon Thaton. Almost the entire spiritual elite of the Mon were brought to Bagan and the captured monks, scholars, master builders, blacksmiths and stone masons soon determined the character of the Burmese capital. The city's temple ruins and sanctuaries are still worshipped in today and have a mystical appeal. Although archaeologists and historians have revealed much of the history of this fascinating metropolis it is likely that part of the splendid history of Bagan will remain a mystery forever.

NPM-DVD-102 - Nature Parks BRYCE CANYON UtahIn the south of the US federal state of UTAH, there's a destination that attracts nature lovers from all over the world: Bryce Canyon National Park, 145 square kilometres of pure nature. Millions of years ago, due to extreme subterranean pressure, the Earth's surface cracked and a landscape was created that is without equal, a gigantic amphitheatre of red stone scattered with a thousand rock needles that tower toward the sky. Typical of Bryce, the canyon's fantastic and bizarre „hoodoos" were created by natural erosion and rise ever upward like towering cathedrals and great skyscrapers, conveying a sense of eternity. The highest point of the park reaches a height of over 2000 metres and contains pines and juniper trees whereas, lower down, there are poplars and willows. In contrast to other canyons, Bryce is not a ravine. It is reminiscent of an amphitheatre that has been dug out of soft limestone. Its rock formations, which originally formed on the seabed, contain large quantities of minerals that produce a fascinating array of colour. Iron oxide is responsible for the strong red tones, copper produces the green hues and manganese adds deep violet. With its various lighting effects, the sun continuously casts a spell on the rocky terrain of this mystical place. This setting of stone and colour infatuates the observer and seduces his imagination and it's easy to believe that one is in another galaxy. The landscape suggests another planet, an unknown world, Light Years away from Earth, and a Black Hole away from civilisation as we know it. The semi-fanciful rock formations are reminiscent of the irregularly-shaped buildings in fairy-tales, sagas and actual reality. Thus this architecture shaped by nature has been given names such as 'Thor's Hammer' and 'Gulliver's Castle' and it has also been likened to Hindu temples and even Wall Street. But the magical fact is...this landscape is a natural reality!

GTR-DVD-1062 - During the Middle Ages, Venice was the most powerful trading metropolis in the Adriatic and Eastern Mediterranean and also a mystical place with a fascinating charisma.Several times a year the sea penetrates the city and overflows onto the Piazza San Marco in which the Basilica, with its Oriental and Byzantine influences, is an impressive sight. Famous personalities such as Casanova and Cagliostro lived in Venice and their decadent lives made a unique contribution to the city's historic reputation. Standing proudly above the Grand Canal is the world famous Rialto Bridge that is supported by 12 thousand pillars and measures 48 metres long and 22 metres wide. The most prosperous of the city's families erected their palaces on the city's canal banks and the foundations of these buildings are supported by thousands of pillars. They also donated lavishly furnished churches and promoted the arts, thus artists such as Giorgione and Tizian became world famous. In earlier times, gravediggers travelled on black veiled gondolas to the small island of San Michele. Flickering lights on wooden poles still illuminate the way to the island cemetery. The humidity of the soil forced the Venetians to bury their dead in the honeycombed alcoves of cemetery walls. During carnival time, the city takes on a special charm when, for ten days prior to Lent, enchanting, colourful costumes and masks dominate the lagoon city. During carnival the melancholic splendour of past centuries awakes and each year the extravagant spectacle attracts large numbers of tourists from all over the world. For mystical delight with a good serving of history, Venice is without equal! GTR-DVD-1109 - Travelling to Lake Titicaca, and at an altitude of over 3,000m, the train journey across the mountainous terrain of the Puna High Plateau is acknowledged as one of most beautiful railway journeys in Peru. For 3,500 m. the yellowish-brown grassland of the Wetlands of Punapuna dominate the landscape of the truly breathtaking high plateau and after several hours the spectacular journey reaches Lake Titicaca, legendary birthplace of Inca culture. Located in the centre of the Andes and at an altitude of nearly 4,000m., Lake Titicaca covers an area of 8,300 square kilometres and has a depth of almost 300m. The western area of the lake contains a fascinating artificial island world known as the 'Floating islands of the ancient people of Uru'. The 'islands' are floating mats of dried-out Totora, a reed-like papyrus that grows in the dense areas of the lake's marshy shallows. It is no wonder that the Inca people believed that this watery region was a holy lake. In Inca mythology, the 'Children Of The Sun', Manco Capac and Mama 0cllo, emerged from the depths of Lake Titicaca to create their glorious and mystical empire. GTR-DVD-1240 - The magical and fairy-tale like city of Jaisalmer in the North Indian province of Rajasthan is like something from the One Thousand And One Nights. The construction of the mighty fortress and subsequent creation of the city under Rajputen monarch, Jaisal, took place in 1155. Today the strongly fortified Jaisalmer Palace is entered by a total of three mighty gates that date back to the sixteenth century. The impressive Jain sanctuaries within the palace were partly built in the fifteenth century before the golden age of the Jaisalmers. Four Jain sanctuaries lead almost directly into each other thus at first sight they look like a single large temple complex. Beyond the city walls are many interesting sights: on one side the splendid Thar Desert and, on the other, the traces of the region's former monarchy. Tombs and many magnificent kenotaphs that are decorated mainly with heroic motifs adorn the barren landscape. Festively adorned camels are a reminder of the colourful era of the caravan trains that once traversed the TharDesert and helped to create the city's wealth. Today Jaisalmer continues to be a magical and mystical city and in the centre of the Thar Desert the glittering dream of the One Thousand And One Nights is still very much alive!
