VPG-DVD-164 - CARIBBEAN ISLANDS Haiti is the starting point of this journey in the Caribbean. Since the time of Columbus it has been the European idyll of paradise set amid a distant ocean. But beyond the dream is the fact that its original inhabitants were wiped out and replaced with African slaves. Now independent states have gradually emerged from the dark shadows of an inglorious past. They inhabit a tropical world, an exotic Caribbean island that consists of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The Arawak Indians named the island, Hayti, Land Of Mountains, and later Columbus changed the name to Hispanola. Wonderful beaches and golden sand, tropical rainforests that reach almost to the sea and crystal clear turquoise water - a perfect place to relax in one of the most beautiful regions in the world. Jamaica is another Caribbean paradise and its second largest city, Montego Bay, is the starting point for tourists from all over the world. Harmony Hall is the name of an immaculate manor house situated on a turn of the century plantation, and James Bond Beach was once the winter retreat of English author, Ian Fleming. Kingston is the capital of Jamaica and the island's political, economic and cultural centre, a former pirate stronghold that is a lively mixture of joie de vivre and reggae. Nassau is the capital of New Providence Island and is only one of more than seven hundred islands in the Bahaman archipelago. It is visited by huge cruise liners that can seen from everywhere as they overshadow the city's buildings and on each side of its tranquil streets the city's pastel coloured houses look like something from a confectioner's shop. Next, Havana, the Caribbean metropolis that for many years has become somewhat run down and neglected. But nowhere else are the cocktails mixed better! Finally, Trinidad, where time seems most definitely to have stood still! Cuba and the Caribbean, a melting pot of colonial culture and an overgrown and abundant Garden of Eden.

VPG-DVD-171 - BAHAMAS Nassau is the capital of the island of New Providence which is one of the many islands of the Bahaman archipelago that extends for almost a thousand kilometres between Cuba and Florida in the Atlantic Ocean. New Providence is the commercial and political centre and is more commonly known as the Bahamas. Built between 1805 and 1813 in typical American southern style, the pink-coloured buildings of Parliament Square are the headquarters of the Bahamian government. In front of the white columned Neo-Classical parliament building is a noble statue of the English queen, Victoria, as a young girl. The colourful Caribbean Straw Market is a lively place. There are lots of fascinating things to see including skilful craftsmen who carve traditional objects from mahogany. Bags, baskets and hats made of straw are offered as souvenirs. Along the coast there are several caves in which pirates once hid their ill-gotten gains or argued over buried treasure. During the Stone Age the Arawak Indians lived in the caves. Cable Beach boasts a multitude of exquisite modern hotel complexes that cater for every need and several of them possess a casino. Naturally, each has its own lavish bathing areas and a vast choice of exciting entertainment. Thus it's not too difficult to understand why British secret agent 007 often chose these islands for his investigations! The Bahamas: the very name conjures up remote sandy beaches and turquoise blue water, romantic sunsets and tropical nights. A place where fantastic dreams become wonderful reality.

7DY-DVD-116 - Nassau is the capital of the island of New Providence which is one of the many islands of the Bahaman archipelago that extends for almost a thousand kilometres between Cuba and Florida in the Atlantic Ocean. New Providence is the commercial and political centre and is more commonly known as the Bahamas. Nassau is a city without skyscrapers. The historic city centre contains several buildings that date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Although the city has around a hundred and fifty thousand inhabitants, it looks like a gold digger's town that has prospered at great speed: and in a way that's exactly what it is! In 1492 Christopher Columbus lay anchor on the Bahaman island of San Salvador and in front of Government House a statue duly commemorates the famous adventurer. The next to arrive were pirates, smugglers, settlers and tradesmen. Every kind of fortune hunter was keen to exploit the islands of the Caribbean. Two bridges connect Nassau with Paradise Island and the most modern and spectacular resort in the Bahamas - Atlantis! This, the largest entertainment oasis in the world, has a unique aquarium landscape. In addition to mantas, dolphins and huge turtles it contains more than two hundred species with no less than fifty thousand sea creatures. The South African hotel tycoon, Sol Kerzner, created this fantastic resort. Lagoons surrounded by jungle, relaxing bays, waterfalls, chain link bridges and channels for swimming with rubber hoses create a sensation of excitement and adventure. Channel Cay is one of more than three hundred and sixty five sunny islands of the Exuma Cay where there's a mouth-watering selection of fresh fish and seafood available. The Bahamas: the very name conjures up remote sandy beaches and turquoise blue water, romantic sunsets and tropical nights. A place where fantastic dreams become wonderful reality.
