NPM-DVD-106 - Nature Parks ACADIA New EnglandThe Acadia National Park is located in the North Eastern region of Maine in the United States and measures 142 square kilometres The close proximity of the North Atlantic Ocean to the coastal forest landscape is one of the park's irresistible attractions. During fall, the season in which New England is at its most magnificent, the forests come alive with soft, warm colours and the entire landscape becomes transformed by this 'fifth season' of the year. Thunder Hole is a further attraction. Onlookers seem almost awe struck when witnessing the relentless might of the Atlantic and the unexpected sound of thunder that emanates from a small cave within the granite cliffs caused by the sea as it floods into the air-filled cave thus releasing the air pressure from within with fantastic, thunderous effect. Loop Road is a scenic route that travels from coast to countryside and passes a picturesque and charming semi-timbered house, the Jordan Pond Gate House, built by John D. Rockefeller in1932. Created from a glacier, Jordan Pond is relatively deep and at its northern end there are two round hills, the 'Bubbles' from the summit of which the vast landscape of the glowing forest below is even more impressive. Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the North Atlantic coast. The scant vegetation of this area is quite surprising especially as it is in such close proximity to the nearby forests. During September, when the first so-called 'leaf reports' are announced in the newspapers and on television, there's an air of excitement. The beginning of the Indian Summer is the time of the 'Leaf Peepers.' Whether they travel to the park by car, foot, horse and carriage or by way of a rented mountain bike, visitors to Acadia's beautiful forests have a wide selection of leaves from which to choose. During fall, the red and orange of the maple trees and the golden yellow hues of aspen and birch melt together in a breathtaking carpet of colour that seems to cover the entire country. Acadia is a veritable arcadia!

MTW-DVD-110 - The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most beautiful bridges in the world and hangs majestically like a giant gateway over San Francisco Bay. In the sunlight, the bridge really does look golden and when a sudden fog descends, the tips of her pillars rise supremely above the waterscape below. A hundred thousand tons of steel and almost 300,000 cubic metres of cement form the foundations which have protected the bridge from storm force winds of up to100 miles an hour. It was originally designed to take 3 million cars a year but in fact it is used by more than 45 million, and the numbers are increasing. To date, a billion vehicles have used this masterpiece of human invention. On 28th May 1937, the San Francisco Chronicle reported: "We got it wrong. The bridge which no-one was supposed to be able to build, no one approved and no one would use, now stands before you in all its glory." Amazing how the newspapers, even in those days, sometimes got it wrong!

WTF-DVD-ISR - "Israel Today!" Filmed and produced by Fran & Brooke ReidelbergerScripted and narrated by Fran Reidelberger Some people say Israel is a land as venerable as the bible and as vibrant as today's newspaper headlines. Accorded formal nation status in 1948, Israel is certainly a part of the world that has known uncommon turmoil for over 2,000 years -- with alternate periods of calm and violence -- and appears headed for more of the same. Filmmakers Fran and Brooke Reidelberger traveled the country from top to bottom on two working trips in 2000 and 2001. Their "Israel Today!" is a timely, new look at this tiny but vitally important place. The film was produced and the show is presented with a hope for peace and prosperity, which the vast majority of people in the region desperately desire and richly deserve.

SHF-DVD-IRAQ - Inside Iraq The Untold StoriesJoin me as I travel Iraq discovering the untold stories about the lives of the Iraqi people and the US soldiers. As a freelance filmmaker, I will take you on a unique personal journey uncovering stories that go beyond the headlines and politics.Tour a children's landmine hospital Visit remote villages with medical aid workers Drop in on illegal gun markets Walk the streets of Baghdad Get a tour of an Abrams tank Meet the soldiers who are finding creative solutions Witness a fire fight with Iraqi insurgents Ride along on night patrols in search of terroristsBelow are media and university reviews for Inside Iraq: The Untold Stories. MEDIA REVIEWS Those who are strongly for or against the Iraq war won't find their positions unequivocally supported by this film. Which is what makes it worth seeing. The Portland Tribune Shiley's film is an incredible guided tour of the Iraq that has yet to be adequately portrayed in mainstream American media. The result is an emotionally complex film that provides perspective on a complex reality that the government has worked to simplify, and the media has done little to clarify. Willamette Week (Portland, OR)-Movie Review It's a journey worth taking, but better him than you. He poked into things that journalists and others don't usually stop to examine, and he emerged with a highly personal travelogue that sheds a light on a complex and volatile situation. The Oregonian Living Section Shiley deserves credit for going to Iraq twice by himself (both times for a month) and trying to get stories he believes are worth showing. San Francisco Chronicle Shiley captures quite a lot of intriguing footage - and makes an important point about just how out of control the situation in Iraq has gotten..." San Francisco Bay Guardian What an amazing, powerful film and presentation. In essence, you provided us with a comprehensive behind the scenes tour, no snap-shot news reports, no "approved" footage, no political speak press conferences, just the simple and unfortunate reality that for everyone involved war is hell.. University of Wisconsin Shiley's footage presented stories of survival amidst extreme strife, the human stories that are not seen for the very most part on the nightly news. "...well attended and compelling..." Purdue University I think the questions you raised last night are part of the conversation we should all be having, and I think it is really admirable that you did the work to help us to have it. Keep it up! Harvard Alumni Association I applaud you for undertaking this difficult and creative work. I think this film has a future as an important source of information for citizens who are confused about the US 'project' in Iraq. Reed College, Portland, OR

GTR-DVD-1059 - A boat leaves the South African city of Capetown and heads for Robben Island which lies just 11 km. off the coast. In the 16th century, the Dutch used the island as a prison but only the remains of later buildings survived. During apartheid, political prisoners were incarcerated there, the prison's most famous inmate having been Nelson Mandela who spent 18 years of his 28 year sentence on the island. He secretly wrote the first part of his memoirs there as well as numerous love letters to his former wife. The island's museum is full of fascinating information about the prison, its former conditions and the everyday life of its inmates. Up until the 1970's the prison didn't possess a dining hall or any modern sanitation. In the course of time, conditions slowly improved even though contact with the outside world was prohibited. Visitors, and even radio news broadcasts, were prohibited. After the closure of the prison, in 1997 the South African government opened both the island and its former prison to the public. Thus the face of Robben Island changed from being a place of terror and suppression to one of pilgrimage, a symbol of resistance and also a major tourist attraction! Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa's Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Latin America make up our world's heritage. Join us as we explore one of these protected monuments.
