NPM-DVD-133 - The Petrified Forest National Park is located in Arizona in the USA. Long ago the region was covered by a dense forest and mighty rivers cut across the terrain. Water caused by heavy flooding forced dead trees to float to a low lying swampland. In the deep quagmire of the swamp and having, in effect, been hermitically sealed, the trees were subsequently covered by layers of sediment. Thus their further decomposition was halted. As the trees piled deeper and deeper into the swamp the petrification process began. Mud, sand and volcanic ash settled above the trees that gradually absorbed minerals from the surrounding moisture. Thus, hundreds of fossilised trunks developed that today are scattered across the prairie. Today, the Petrified Forest's formerly tall conifers are the most common examples of this stone world of plants that dates back to prehistory. The numerous colours of the pure quartz and various other varieties of the "stone trees" are quite remarkable and in stark contrast to the bright blue of the mostly cloudless sky. Most impressive is the millions of years old geologic phenomenon of the stone forest in the southern region that is situated only two kilometres from the entrance to the national park. In the Long Logs area that is located close to Giant Logs, there are hundreds of thousands of fossilised specimens. There are around three hundred archaeological sites in the park that range from small discoveries that have uncovered items of clay, to the incredible Pueblo dwellings of the Anasazi Indians. The Petrified Forest National Park combines the majestic brilliance of its petrifaction with the rugged beauty of a colourful desert. It is, without doubt, a unique masterpiece of Nature.

NPM-DVD-147 - In the south west of the state of South Dakota is a mysterious-looking landscape that is rugged, sparse and a surreal-looking desert of rock that is colourfully known as the Badlands. For around five hundred thousand years the forces of wind, air and water have gradually shaped the mighty rocks that appear like huge walls across the Badlands. In some places the rock walls look like miniature mountains and everywhere one looks there are fascinating rock formations. In addition it is the many colours contained within the rock that also focus the attention. Conversely, the Badlands Prairie features a large variety of grasses that are only to be found in this region of North America. Between the scattered rocks are a total of fifty six varieties of grass that combine to form an ecological system that is unique in the world. Paleotologists also benefit from the weather beaten terrain of South Dakota as the south west region also features several fossil excavation sites. Remains of the original ancestors of the horse, the Mesohippus, have been discovered in the Badlands as well as the petrified bones of carnivores such as the Creodonten and various now-extinct turtles. Badlands may be its name but in no way does it describe the unspoiled magnificence of its truly unique and spectacular scenery.

7DY-DVD-164 - Cheyenne is Wyoming's most populated city. When the railroad was constructed in 1860 this "hell-like settlement at end of the railroad" became an important trading centre. For what was to become the federal government, the State Capitol was built and with its golden dome and Corinthian columns it is similar to its larger counterpart in Washington. In the middle of the eighteenth century French scouts were the first to penetrate this region that was then inhabited by the Arapaho and Shoshone Indians. The cowboys and farmers of the Old West needed to spend their hard earned money and Cheyenne profited accordingly and a profusion of hotels, saloons and warehouses suddenly appeared. The Badlands was given its name by the Native Indians due to the inhospitable terrain as they felt threatened by it. Thirty seven million years of wind, rain and snow transformed this highland into a natural work of art that was inaugurated as a national park in 1978. Set within the Black Hills in the state of South Dakota is one of the most famous landmarks in the United States, the Mount Rushmore National Memorial where four monumental portraits of the most famous American presidents have been carved into the granite and symbolize a kind of spectacular tribute to democracy. Twenty five kilometres south west of Mount Rushmore another stone image towers up from the landscape, the Crazy Horse Memorial. Constructed in 1947 it commemorates the famous chief of the Oglala Sioux and its dimensions are even larger than those of Mount Rushmore. As in former times, the routes of the first pioneers still bring visitors into the far west through overwhelming mountain scenery with grandiose views, Wild West towns, buffalo prairies and vast ranches. Make no mistake about it, America's Wild West is still wild: a place of natural spectacles and nostalgic adventure!

7DY-DVD-126 - Windhoek is the flourishing capital of Namibia and it is from here that we begin a journey through this country and experience some of the magic of the Dark Continent on a luxurious train - the Desert Express! Dating back to colonial times, the Christ Church is a reminder of the end of hostilities between the Germans and the indigenous population during the period when it was known as 'German West Africa', and indeed German influence in this part of the world is still very much in evidence today. A short journey leads into the isolated loneliness of the prairie and to lion feeding at the Okapuka Ranch in which an Austrian keeps lions in their natural environment. A popular holiday resort on the mouth of the River Swakop and the final destination of the rail journey, Swakopumund, through whose harbour everything that was used in German West Africa was transported, resulting in a regular trading route between Swakopmund and Hamburg for more than ten years - a hint of Germany on the edge of the desert! In Swakopumund there are architectural treasures that were rented out in the days ofthe Kaiser and are reminiscent of various houses in Berlin. This is a part of Germany that no longer exists in Germany itself. Moon Valley is bizarre and extra-terrestrial and for millions of years it has withstood the erosive power of the Swakop. With its deep-cut valleys and no vegetation in sight, the endless rocky landscape seems unfriendly, life threatening and impassable. Namutoni Camp is situated in the centre of the Etosha National Park and has a history that dates back to 1851. Thirsty antelopes and zebras rendezvous at a watering hole while a herd of elephants drink at another. Namibia is, quite rightly, a much sought after tourist destination. White deserts, wild animals, mountains strewn with ravines, and white beaches - Africa's south west is full of more than a few colourful surprises!
