ROMA Roma Aeterna, eternal city and ancient centre of the world. The Piazza Navona is situated in one of the Italian capital's most beautiful squares in a city that has always been a dream destination for travellers from all over the world. Pope Gregor The 13th had the Palazzo Del Quirinale built as his summer residence but it was not long before the Italian monarchs acquired it as their Renaissance palace. Today it is the residence of Italy's President and the daily changing of the guards ceremony is still a popular attraction. The 17th century St. Peter's Square is the most beautiful square in the world and is situated in the centre of the Vatican, an autonomous Church State in the heart of Rome that also contains the imposing and breathtaking Petersdom, the largest Christian church in the world. The allure of this city lies in its combination of chaos and joie de vivre, elegance and creativity. Rome is a complete work of art!

The most famous of all bridges across the Moldau is the Charles Bridge that connects the old town of Stare Mesto with the city district of Mala Strane below Castle Mountain. Old Town Square is the name of a picturesque square in the centre of the old town surrounded by houses and churches whose facades form a colourful blend of numerous architectural styles. Prague Castle originated from a Slavic settlement in the 9th century A.D. and it is the largest castle complex in the world. The front of the main building measures more than half a kilometre. Nearly one third of its inner courtyard belongs to St. Veits Dom a wonderful Gothic cathedral whose construction took several centuries. A boat trip on the Moldau is an absolute must on any visit to Prague. Most of the excursion boats leave from Charles Bridge close to the Kampa Peninsula. The journey travels beneath a few of the city's sixteen bridges and the view from the boat adds a totally different perspective to the sights experienced on the city's streets. Everyone who visits this city falls in love with it and cannot help but be totally fascinated by its special ambience. Prague is a thing of beauty in the very heart of Europe!

Situated on a small island on the River Seine is the Cathedral Of Notre Dame, the 'Mother Church Of The Nation'. Built on the foundations of a Roman temple and commissioned by the bishops Maurice and Eudes De Sully, it took almost 200 years to build this Gothic masterpiece. Built at the end of the 19th century as a symbol of national revival, Montmartre's Sacre Coeur has the appearance of a white, fairy-tale palace with 237 steps that lead up to the main entrance of this extraordinary structure. Its Byzantine architecture and five cupolas are reminiscent of the Marcus Dome in Venice. Of course, there are the dizzy heights of the Eiffel Tower and a great deal more. Paris is a wonderful festival of the senses!

In the 19th Century, New Orleans was North American capital of the Voodoo cult and today it is a city of unique atmospheres, flavours, contrasts and Mardi Gras: an extraordinary city!

A hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast, the strategically located city was once the capital of the Umayyad. Cannons, the busts of various presidents and military vehicles are displayed in the large courtyard of the Takiyeh Mosque, an ancient Dervish monastery complex. Built in 1554 and designed by Ottoman master architect, Sinan, it also includes an adjoining inn for the numerous pilgrims who travelled to Mecca. Damascus has always been much prized: by the pharaohs and the Babylonian monarch, Nebukadnezar, and later, Alexander The Great. Then came Persian, Roman and Islamic emperors followed by the Crusaders and Mongols. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls. It was from here that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Romans built a fort here that was constantly extended with impressive walls and towers and located directly outside the city wall, the River Barada was also of strategic importance. Although the Mongols destroyed the inner buildings, the fortress walls survived. The Suq is an important part of every Islamic city, a market that originated in ancient times. Thousands of shops in numerous interconnected lanes form the commercial heart of Damascus. In the Gold Suq everything glitters, bracelets, rings and even a large variety of kitchen utensils. Damascus has for thousands of years been a place desired by the powerful. Yet it has managed to survive and is still the most beautiful capital city in the Near East.

New Orleans also possesses the second largest harbour in the USA and even today they shout, „Full speed ahead!" as paddle steamers negotiate 'Ol Man River', the grand waters of the Mississippi that flow to the Mississippi Swamps. The Swamps are extensive and only experienced boatmen can find their way around the mass of main and side tributaries as it's easy to become disorientated, sight of the sky often being lost due to the density of the trees. In the past 5,000 years the Mississippi had seven different deltas prior to it being reinforced by embankments. When dykes strengthened the river, some side channels remained and these are the famous small rivers known as the Bayous, a labyrinth of small tributaries and waterways. ‚Cowens' is the name of the oldest life form in the swamp, a turtle that grows to about 10 to 25 centimetres long and feeds mainly on small fish and aquatic animals. Almost 30,000 hectares of swampland have been declared a nature reserve in which the complex balance between salt and freshwater reigns supreme and, when viewed from above, has the appearance of a strange network of city streets. The Delta area provides ideal conditions for many feathered species, including around four million ducks and also the national symbol of the USA, the white-headed sea eagle and the variety of animals living in this region, most notably the alligator, is also vast and includes beaver and racoon. The wonderful world of the Swamps with their legends and myths draw the traveller under their spell, a bewitching labyrinth of infinite waterways each one holding a special fascination. The allure of Nature is surely as puzzling as the innermost secrets of the Mississippi Swamps!

Around this framework a 2.4 millimetre thick copper coating was attached to the statue and it is mainly due to Eiffel's frame that the monument has withstood the bay's savage winter storms. On the 28th October 1886, North America's most important statue was inaugurated by President Grover Cleveland. The statue was the design of a young sculptor, Bartholdi, who had eagerly accepted the work due to the fact that the commission of his design of a large female statue for a lighthouse on the Suez Canal had not reached fruition. At first, the statue received little love and affection. Indeed, New Yorkers used the statue's unveiling ceremony for a protest demonstration! Since then, however, it has most assuredly conquered the hearts of those who have seen it and it has become a symbol of freedom for the whole of America.
