VPG-DVD-190 - DELHI Delhi is the political and administrative capital of India and the largest democracy in the world, a melting pot of both culture and religion plus a constantly expanding metropolis that has more than ten million inhabitants. Built on the site of twelve former cities it is the gateway to India and has been the country's centre of power for almost a thousand years. Jama Masjid, the Friday Mosque, is one of old Delhi's main landmarks, bequeathed to the city by the Mogul king, Shah Jahan. Its huge inner courtyard accommodates twenty thousand. Raj Ghat is a memorial to the country's former political leaders and once contained the funeral pyres of Mahatma Ghandi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Ghandi. Rajpath is the name of an impressive three hundred metre wide road flanked by green swathes and luxuriant fountains, remnants of British Imperial rule. The National Rail Museum contains an interesting collection of nostalgic locomotives, carriages and memorabilia and for those who do not wish to risk a journey on India's present day over-packed trains, the museum provides the perfect opportunity to imagine how it must have been on the Indian railroads of old. The Safdar-Jang Mausoleum was built in the final years of Mogul rule and is an architectural monument of this golden era. It contains each design element of this epoch, with a terrace-like substructure, painted stucco and a dome. No other city in this huge and diverse country demonstrates the dramatic history of India with all the intensity of colour as Delhi.

VPG-DVD-223 - AMMAN Amman is an historic metropolis in which ancient times and modern life meet face to face and where poverty and wealth live side by side. At first sight the city's ancient roots are not obvious, however, they date back to Biblical times. Abdoun is one of the city's modern city districts. For many years the city's former suburbs have been integrated into the megalopolis thus they now cover several additional hills. The slopes are crowded with modern, bright terraced houses and villas constructed of limestone and a modern infrastructure connects the residential districts with the old town at the foot of the hills. The King Abdullah Mosque is the largest and, due to its striking blue cupola, the most beautiful mosque in Amman. Although only completed in 1988 it is an important symbol of Islam. In 1900 the Ottoman Sultan ordered the construction of the Hedjaz Railroad that was designed to unite the Ottoman Empire that had begun to disintegrate as well as to transport Moslem pilgrims to Medina in the Hedjaz Mountains. The monarchs who ruled over this land have been many and both earthquakes and fire have devastated its buildings. But Amman has managed to survive and now continues to be a prosperous and vibrant metropolis.

OTT-DVD-113 - On Tour... THE CANADIAN Toronto To Vancouver RailridingTHE CANADIAN A very special train journey begins Toronto and travels a distance of 4500 kilometres to Vancouver. The three day journey promises discovery, adventure and momentous Nature as well as lively modern cities and time-honoured traditions. In Toronto, the CN Tower is the highest freestanding building in the world and provides a thrilling view across the city. When the weather's good it's possible to see as far as 120 km. to the distant haze of Niagara Falls. The Skydome is located next to the CN Tower and is a multifunctional sports arena with enormous proportions that has an extendable dome under which many types of sports events and concerts take place. The main route of the Canadian Pacific Railroad that travels through western Canada dates back to1885 although the comforts offered by the famous train, The Canadian, are far from dated as for additional comfort there's the Bullet Lounge, the Mural Lounge and the Art Deco Bar. The landscape opens up and in the autumn light dense forests and dark blue lakes create an enchanting scene with a wonderful variety of colours that range from ochre-yellow and dark red, to purple. Passing endless cargo trains we head to Winnipeg, the 'City of Trees' that lies at the mouth of both the Red River and the Assiniboine River. Containing over two million trees this former settlement is now Canada's fourth largest city. The high peaks of the Rocky Mountains come into view, the former domain of gold-diggers, hunters and pioneers, where the city of Jasper is the starting point of many interesting excursions in the mountain area. The shining blue Moraine Lake is situated in the Valley Of The Ten Peaks, while the Chateau Lake Louis is one of the oldest and most beautiful railway hotels in the Rocky Mountains. Finally, Vancouver, and it's far from easy to say farewell to the most inspiring and famous railway journey in the world -- The Canadian!

OTT-DVD-123 - The Shan State Express is the sonorous name of a unique train that travels to the north of Myanmar and to the legendary kingdom of the Shan. It passes through some of the most splendid scenery in South East Asia. We begin in the famous city of Mandalay that has a population of around a million and is a centre of Burmese art. Mandalay was founded around one hundred and fifty years ago and is therefore a relatively young metropolis. It owes its existence to an outstanding monarch, King Mindon who, wishing to escape from his kingdom's turbulent past, had a brand new royal city built. The journey on the Shan State Express begins early in the morning in Mandalay Train Station. Immediately after leaving the city we encounter wonderful scenery that is strongly influenced by a remarkable backdrop of mountains and unspoiled Nature. The railroad travels in a zigzag up the mountains which enables it to negotiate severe slopes that would otherwise be impossible for it to climb vertically. With the arrival of the railroad an increasing number of small farming villages developed most of which were populated by the Shan. Accounting for around eight point five per cent of the total population, the Shan are the largest ethnic minority in Myanmar. Their culture has been a major contribution to the historical development of South East Asia. At numerous railway stations Westerners are sometimes a little wary of the various snacks on offer. When a tempting skewer of food suddenly turns out to be a grilled locust the appetite can sometimes disappear within seconds! The continuing journey on the Shan State Express travels once more into the countryside. Picturesque hills line the route that is close to a famous militarily name, the Burma Road. The Shan State is truly one of the most colourful areas in South East Asia. Due to the extended train route from Mandalay to Lashio the time is hopefully not far away when the poverty of this region will be replaced by a new era of well deserved prosperity.

OTT-DVD-144 - Selous is Africa's oldest and largest game reserve and is the habitat of many rare animals. It also contains more than four hundred bird species and some fascinating flora. There is no precise timetable for the train that will arrive from Zambia, it could arrive at virtually any moment and the train stops at the Selous Game Reserve twice a week. Most of the railroad is made up of a single track and only a few stations have sidings that permit the railroads' freight trains to make way for the Mukuba Express. Despite the railroad and its safari travellers, Selous has retained its original and unspoiled splendour right up to the present day. Over the years many of the old train stations have been abandoned and now look like sad relics of a bygone age. The historic origins of this extraordinary railroad date back to German colonial times at the beginning of the twentieth century. What was once known as The Middle Land Railroad was one of the most technically challenging and expensive projects of East Africa's German colonists. Today the one thousand two hundred and fifty four kilometre railroad is an important reminder of those bygone days. In the late afternoon the train reaches its final destination of Dar-Es-Salaam and this unforgettable and captivating train journey comes to an end.

OTT-DVD-117 - On Tour... CIRCUMETNEA RAILROAD SICILIA Mount Etna's "VolcaFERROVIA CIRCUMETNEA Catania is the end of the line for a small railroad that encircles Mount Etna, the Ferrovia Circumetnea. In the heart of Catania various remnants that date back to Roman times indicate the glorious past of the second largest city in Sicily although its origins are far older. The journey around Mount Etna begins in the small and unspectacular station of the privately owned Ferrovia Circumetnea narrow gauge railway. The railroad once travelled to Catania's harbour and today the line ends in the middle of the city. However, the simplicity of this railroad belies the fact that a journey along it is an absolute must! A couple of kilometres outside Catania there are vast fertile fields. In the background is the mighty and over three thousand metre high Mount Etna, one of the most active and famous volcanoes in the world. The history of the railroad around Mount Etna began at the end of the nineteenth century when it was important that Sicily's remote cities had ready access to the seaport of Catania.. The journey on the Ferrovia Circumetnea travels through some exceptionally beautiful scenery that contains a number of picturesque farms. The land owes its fertility to Mount Etna as, despite its destructive force, the fertile volcanic ground is ideal for agriculture. Large quantities of carbon dioxide are constantly emitted from Etna's crater. However, the crater's white smoke is normally quite harmless. Even though the volcano is active throughout the year eruptions are still relatively rare and the last large eruption was in 2002. Just like a good wine a ride on the Ferrovia Circumetnea improves with age. This must be the most atmospheric way in which to discover the remarkable Mount Etna!

OTT-DVD-140 - The fascinating journey on the famous Bergensbanen begins in Norway's capital city of Oslo which contains a large variety of interesting historic buildings that are well worth a visit. Indeed, the city originated in the middle of the eleventh century during the reign of King Harald Hårdråde. For almost a century Norway was part of Sweden and in 1905 a referendum put an end to its unpopular union and Norway achieved its Independence. The construction of the railroad posed a major challenge for the engineers of that time and its construction took many years. The first section of today's Bergensbanen was completed in 1883 and extended from Bergen to Voss. On its journey to Bergen the Bergensbanen travels across the highest plateau in Europe, the eight thousand square kilometre, Hardangervidda. At one thousand two hundred and twenty two metres above sea level Finse is the Bergensbanen's highest station and was opened in 1909 when Norway's King Hakon was one of the first passengers to travel on the new railroad. The journey on the Bergensbanen not only travels through one of the most charming and natural landscapes in Europe it also features the history of Norway: a unique adventure indeed!

The Jasper Tramway travels into the fantastic mountain world of the Rockies and the grandiose panorama from the summit of Mount Whistler gives an awesome first impression of this majestic mountain region. Whistler Road winds through fields of stones whose barren wastes are like those of a strange planet and the route opens up into a landscape which existed when the earth was in its infancy. Deep into the heart of this magical world the journey leads to the Icefield Parkway past huge forests with tracks leading nowhere, of which only the indigenous Indians and the woodland animals are familiar with the terrain. On a plain which extends 300 square kilometres, the Columbia Ice Fields includes Mount Columbia which rises 4,000 metres toward the heavens. Experienced mountain guides explain this wonder world of nature. Lake Louise is probably the most famous of Canada's mountain lakes and is located at the foot of the 3,464 meter tall Mount Victoria. The chateau Lake Louise was built by the Canadian Pacific Railroad in1886. Far from civilisation and the hectic pace of city life, it offers a good level of service and comfortable accommodation.
