VPG-DVD-163 - MARSEILLE Marseille is the oldest city in France and its largest commercial harbour in the Mediterranean. It is believed that in 600 B.C. travellers from the Greek town of Phokis founded the autonomous town of 'Massalia'. In the Middle Ages the city's main harbour was used by the crusaders to embark on their journey to Jerusalem and it rivalled those of the maritime republics of Genoa, Pisa and Venice. One of Marseille's main landmarks rises high above the harbour, the seafarers' church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Garde. It towers above the city like a fortress and on its bell tower is a gilded ten metre high figure of the Virgin Mary. Several hundred yachts of all sizes crowd into the old harbour where there is often little room for the comings and goings of modern day sailors. It is difficult to imagine that once near-starving slaves were forced to use their last ounce of strength to row their master's galleys into the harbour. Modern harbour complexes require a great deal of space as is well demonstrated by Marseille's new harbour and after Rotterdam it is the second largest in Europe. Two mighty fortresses overlook the harbour: the northern Fort Saint-Jean is the oldest and was used by the Order Of The Knights Of Malta; the Fort Saint Nicolas stands guard over the southern side of the narrow harbour entrance and was built in the 17th century. The tiny island of Chateau D`If was made famous due to a novel by Alexander Dumas, The Count Of Monte Christo. A small museum features many items related to this classic novel and visitors can search for the hole in the wall through which Edmond Dantès is said to have entered the Abbé Faria. A boat trip from Cassis leads to one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe: Les Calanques a unique nature reserve. Shining white limestone cliffs plunge more than four hundred metres into the deep blue sea and extend for twenty kilometres. Marseille - France's wonderful gateway to Africa!

VPG-DVD-222 - HAMBURG Hamburg is a lively metropolis in the north of Germany and contains several green spaces, canals and lakes and provides a good standard of living for its inhabitants. Although known as a harbour city, Hamburg is located on the Elbe and is more than a hundred kilometres from the North Sea. Due to its huge river the sheltered harbour is accessible to large containerships. The Speicherstadt is part of the harbour and is the largest warehouse complex in the world and is crossed by canals that are known as fleets. It was once what amounted to a city of warehouses whose Gothic brick architecture with gables, pinnacles and arches created an extraordinary setting. The tower of St. Michaelis Church is lovingly known as 'Michel' and is one of the city's most famous landmarks and it is also one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in the north of Germany, its white, grey and golden interior being particularly impressive. City Hall highlights the power of the autonomous Hansestadt Hamburg. This impressive building is supported by four thousand oak posts in the former swampland of the Alster. Hamburg is a green city on the water and gateway to the world: a European harbour that contains the spirit of distant lands!

VPG-DVD-168 - BOSTON Boston has over half a million inhabitants and is the largest of New England's cities. As its most important commercial and financial centre, the city on the Charles River has always played an historic role and was the cradle of Independence. In the centre of Boston, Copley Square features the Trinity Church, which contrasts with the modern Hancock Tower that dominates the skyline. Park Street Church was where, in 1829, William Garrison gave his first anti-slavery speech. In the adjacent Granary Burial Ground some of America's most famous sons are buried, such as John Hancock, Samuel Adams and Paul Revere. Beacon Hill has hardly changed over the past 150 years, an architectural gem with narrow, winding cobbled streets and even today the wrought ironwork of its balconies and banisters indicate that this is one of Boston's most sought after areas. In front of the Old South Meeting House, in 1729 thousands of Boston's inhabitants protested against the English king and the taxes that he had imposed upon them. The Old State House is Boston's oldest public building. In 1776, it was here that the Declaration of Independence was read out for the first time. The Plimouth Plantation is a reconstruction of the Pilgrim Fathers' original settlement and is one of the jewels of the many living museums in the USA. To the south west of Boston there is the museum town of Old Sturbridge Village in which historic buildings from all over the country have been lovingly replicated.. Village inhabitants in historical costumes walk and talk in wide open spaces and act out the scenes of daily life as it was two centuries ago. New England is the traditional face of America and the heart of America's past.

VPG-DVD-182 - AMSTERDAM Amsterdam is a captivating metropolis, a city of canals in which anything is allowed as long as it does no harm. In 1567 the much-travelled Italian, Lodovico Guicciardini, referred to Amsterdam as 'The Venice of the north'. Today the view across the main square and royal castle gives little hint that the city is supported by stakes and that Amsterdam is the largest lakeland village in the world. The bicycle is one of the city's main features and indeed parking spaces have been designed specially for this mode of transport that shows that even in a large city there is an alternative way of getting about. In the city centre there are nearly seven thousand protected houses and warehouses most of which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries and the three hundred year old Magere Brug is of wood construction and is one of the most beautiful drawbridges in the world. The Bloemenmarkt has been in existence since the 17th century and in bygone days fresh flowers were delivered by boat and sold on board. Here a great variety of colourful tulips and bulbs is offered for sale as well as many exotic plants and seeds. New Church is almost six hundred years old but due to it's lack of worshippers it is now used as a venue for exhibitions and concerts which fund its continued maintenance. Built in around 1300 A.D., Old Church is the oldest religious building in the city. During the Middle Ages it served as a refuge for vagrants but today it is surrounded by a seedy sex and entertainment district. In 1682 the city fathers decided to create a leisure area in the east of the city in the centre of which the Artis Zoo was subsequently established, the oldest zoo on the European continent. Amsterdam possesses an inescapable charm that is adored by both aged hippies and trendy teenagers alike. It is Europe's irresistible 'Capital of Cool!

NPM-DVD-117 - Nature Parks CANYONLANDS PARK UtahLocated in the south east of the U.S. State of Utah, the Canyonlands National Park is like something from another world with steep river valleys many hundreds of metres deep that wind majestically through a breathtaking landscape. The landscape of the high plateau is dominated by stone and contains a type of desert vegetation that is typical of Utah's wide open spaces. Tall trees are few and far between but the small rugged trees that grow on less nutrient ground have adjusted to the region's harsh climate. During dry summers the temperature frequently reaches more than 35 degrees, thus scant tufts of grass are the most frequent form of vegetation. The banks of both the Green River and Colorado River provide a perfect habitat for several domestic bird species such as ravens, buzzards, owls, heron and geese, while swallows and eagles nest on the higher terrain. Among all the natural beauty there are also numerous traces of human habitation that date from time immemorial that, in the southern section of the park, include the rock paintings and caves of the ancient Fremont People. Each of the numerous textures of the park's sandstone has been subjected to various degrees of erosion that has created a multitude of fascinating natural stone 'sculptures'. Whether it's the Island In The Sky, the Needles or the almost inaccessible Maze area, each section of the park is well worth a visit and for admirers of the American Wild West, this is the place to be! Despite its exceptional and remarkable natural beauty, the vast expanse of Canyonlands is still a well kept secret. A marvellous wonder of majestic Nature.

NPM-DVD-108 - Nature Parks BOG OF ZAPATA CubaThe Cienaga De Zapata Nature Park is situated in one of Cuba's most humid regions, the Zapata Peninsula. The simple huts of the Indian village of Guama give a basic impression of the life of the country's original inhabitants which like silent witnesses of the past rise out of a steaming swamp in the light of the breaking dawn. The rising sun paints the landscape in warm hues of colour and the flight of a bird is a reminder that under the cover of apparent stillness, there is a constant pulse of life. In this natural bio-space exist biological remnants which stem from the time of Earth's infancy. A lonely fishing boat moves quietly through the morning haze, past wooden bridges and dwellings, accompanied only by the splashing of water and the eternal melody of the wild and exuberant plant and animal kingdoms. The most varied life forms coexist harmoniously in this natural paradise, the splendour of the plant world contrasting starkly with bizarre forms of decay and the transformation of life and death which is bound up in nature. Slowly and dominantly, the crocodile-shaped head of the primeval Manjuari, a fish thought to have been extinct until some years ago, forces itself through the dense surface of the water only to quickly disappear into near-impenetrable vegetation. In the king palm covered Cochinos, the so-called Bay of Pigs, on the Playa Longa, only a few remnants remain of the failed landing of exiled Cubans in 1961. This peaceful paradise of grazing horses and white heron makes it easy to forget that this infamous event brought the world to the brink of annihilation. The Cienaga De Zapata is a universe of nature's treasures, a last refuge of Earth's history which stamps itself forever into the memory.

MTW-DVD-104 - On the east coast of the Florida Peninsula, Cape Canaveral juts out into the Atlantic, an uninhabitable area that consists of lagoons, mangrove swamps and marshes. As far back as 1949 the 'Rocket Trials Zone', as it was then known, has been further developed and extended to become the world famous Space Station it is today. From here, the first Americans went into orbit and also landed on the moon and more than 110 manned space flights have been launched from the Cape which, in its golden years, employed more than 25,000. Models of numerous rockets are displayed along with monitors that show the original pre-launch countdown procedure. The layout of the launch surveillance control room is featured in the Apollo Saturn 5 Center and, in the distance, an impressive array of launch pads is on view. The Kennedy Space Center is America's 'gateway to the stars' from where rockets, satellites and astronauts are launched into the universe to explore the unknown. Our feet well and truly on the ground, most of us will never get closer to space than this truly impressive, historic yet futuristic, space center.

GTR-DVD-1211 - Lush green surrounds the historic buildings of the remote farm settlement of Glaumbaer deep in the north of Iceland. Glaumbaer's turf houses were built in the late 19th century but the origin of the farm dates back far longer. Many of its stone structures were built by the Vikings who lived in the region during the 11th century. As was common in most of Iceland's former farming communities, Glaumbaer contained several buildings that were located around a central building. The 'badstofa' served as a working, living and sleeping space and was also the location of the communal kitchen, one of the most popular places to be in the harsh cold of winter. In addition to the important archaeological finds that have recently been made, the former ancient community of farmers and Vikings that once lived here no doubt still contains many a secret yet to be discovered. GTR-DVD-1123 - In 1867, after many centuries of Habsburger rule, the kingdom of Hungary was finally acknowledged as an official State and a parliament was appointed. London's Houses Of Parliament served as the model for Budapest's new parliament building. The idea was to emphasise to the Hungarian people the positive way that both democracy and the monarchy could be part of the same political system. The magnificent shape of the Budapest Parliament is similar to a palace. Two bronze lions decorate the steps that lead to the main entrance of the splendid government building that symbolised the hopes of a new kingdom. With its 700 rooms and total floor space of 473,000 square metres, for many decades this was the greatest building in the world. And even with its powerful proportions, the Budapest Parliament radiates elegance and grace. At night this architectural symbol of the Hungarian people with its 100 metre high cupolas, lights up the capital and also the dark waters of the Danube.
