VPG-DVD-233 - ZANZIBAR Zanzibar is a paradise-like island just off the Tanzanian coast. An island of spice and exotic aromas, sultans' palaces, harems, shining white beaches and fiery red sunsets. The ancient oriental city of Zanzibar derived its name from its many old stone buildings. Charming and mysterious they have witnessed much of the island's dramatic past and the tangled architecture of coral stone and shell lime serves as a fascinating backdrop to this colourful city that is strongly influenced by an Arabian way of life. In the north of the old town is one of the island's most beautiful buildings, the Ismali Dispensarium. It was built by a wealthy Indian businessman and was originally a hospital with an adjoining pharmacy. Today it contains a cultural centre. The house of the infamous Tippu Tip who was once Zanzibar's biggest slave trader, has not yet been restored. He was an extremely unpleasant man who sent his servants into the African bush to catch slaves who were later sold in Zanzibar Livingstone House was built in 1861. The famous missionary and explorer once resided there prior to going on his final expedition. He was frequently the guest of Tippu Tip who offered Dr. Livingstone various maps that were based upon his slave routes. A tropical paradise just off the African coast with the flair of the Orient, historic architecture and the colours of Africa. Zanzibar is most assuredly a legendary and fairy-tale island of global culture.

NPM-DVD-142 - In the north of Tanzania is one of Africa's finest natural landscapes, the Serengeti. From endless grass covered savannahs to dense rain forests the large variety of landscapes as well as many species of wildlife is really quite remarkable. The Massai have retained their age-old traditions and the pastures at the bottom of the Ngorongoro Crater are ideal for their herds of cattle. The two hundred and sixty square kilometre Ngorongoro Crater is not only a wonder of nature but also home to an impressive number of animals. The bottom of the crater is covered with grass and several watering holes provide a perfect habitat for large herds of wild animals. In the second half of the twentieth century two British archaeologists and anthropologists made several striking discoveries in the region. In the Oldupai Canyon they discovered a Hominid skull that made both explorers world famous as the almost two million year old skull was the oldest prehistoric discovery of human existence ever found. Each morning two balloons take off from the Massai Kopjes in the centre of the National Park on a one hour journey above the Serengeti. Depending on wind and weather conditions the balloon rises to an altitude of more than three hundred metres above sea level. The pilots often navigate their balloons close to the ground and just above the treetops when most of the animals run away at the sight of the hot air balloon and the strange sound caused by its burner. Gazelles, gnus and buffalo crowd into their favourite pastureland that is usually located close to various watering holes while vultures are always to be found close to the herds and are always ready to take advantage of a dead or dying animal. The Serengeti - a symbol of a paradise that may not last forever and a world full of primeval beauty and natural wonder.

NPM-DVD-149 - The Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania is a nature reserve of the superlative and as well as being both the oldest and largest game reserve in Africa it is a world of natural beauty and exotic wildlife. Much of Selous is crossed by the Rufuji River and its tributaries and although the region has a relatively small amount of rainfall each year the Rufuji contains more water than most other rivers in East Africa. Prior to the establishment of the game reserve this area was a paradise for hunters and poachers as is evident by the many hunting trophies that are on show in the Mbega Camp. Specially equipped four wheel drive vehicles are used for travelling across the savannah. Almost all of the Selous Game Reserve's camps offer various tours. However, despite its size and beautiful landscape, compared to many other African nature parks Selous is little known on the tourist trail. For those on safari the river provides many opportunities to observe all kinds of animals as all of the reservation's wildlife depend on water for survival and sometimes the river banks are like a veritable Noah's Ark. Around forty thousand hippopotamuses populate the waters of the Selous Game Reserve that is also a habitat for much bird life. More than four hundred varieties have been counted including some rare species that are almost close to extinction. The Selous Game Reserve is rightly referred to as "a nature reserve of the superlative." It is a world full of natural beauty whose spectacular originality has managed to survive right up to the present day.

GTR-DVD-1241 - Stone Town is one of the oldest districts in the city of Zanzibar, East Africa's oldest town that is still inhabited today. In addition to beautiful windows it is the city's richly decorated doors that have become a unique feature of Zanzibar's architecture. The colourful spirit of the city can be experienced in the many labyrinth-like markets that bring Stone Town to life. The chaos, excitement and hectic pace of the fruit and vegetable markets is a real feast of the senses. Up until the end of the nineteenth century Zanzibar's central slave market was held on the site of today's Anglican Church. A fascinating group of sculptures recalls this dark and cruel chapter of the island's history, a highly profitable business that was controlled by the Arabian upper classes. Following the revolution of 1964 the Sultan's Palace was also transformed and today it is the People's Palace and is open to the public. It contains a museum that provides a fascinating insight into the opulent lifestyle of the Sultan's court. Stone Town days usually come to their most beautiful climax when the fishing boats return to the harbour and the setting sun fills the sky with a kaleidoscopic array of magnificent colours. 7DY-DVD-163 - Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa and is located slightly south of the Equator. Its large variety of nature is overwhelming and includes the Serengeti and Selous Nature Reserves, the snow-covered Kilimanjaro and the spice island of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean. It is a country of superlatives that originated in 1964 as a result of the union of two independent countries, Tanganika and Zanzibar. On the slopes of Meru and Kilimanjaro, coffee, maize, bananas and vegetables are grownand then offered for sale at various markets. Due to its fertile volcanic soil the entire region has been used for agriculture since the middle of the nineteenth century by both the Arusha Massai and Meru tribes. The Arusha National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in Africa and its green forests are a perfect playground for the countless monkeys that live there. Around twenty million years ago its landscape was created due to volcanic activity and wonderful craters were formed as well as impressive volcanic cones. The swampy forest on the slopes of the Rift Valley features more than thirty different varieties of tree, an impressive area that offers distant views across fascinating and untouched nature and for the many wealthy tourists who spend their money in the region there are various special locations that provide excellent accommodation. The origins of the Selous Game Reserve date back to German colonial times at the beginning of the twentieth century. Later, under British rule, they were united into a large protected area. Tanzania is a natural paradise that is still known by only a few. An exotic country and one that is still waiting to be explored!
