VPG-DVD-117 - MARRAKESH Marrakesh, the 'red pearl' of Morocco was founded by Youssef Ben Tachfin in 1602. It is one of the country's four Royal Cities. Up to the beginning of the 20th century the city was a trading centre for both the north of Morocco and the Sahara and the monarchs of various dynasties made Marrakesh their capital city. The large souks of Marrakesh's Medina are divided into numerous sections and stock just about everything known to Man! In spite of the city's apparent calm there is much activity and the traffic is surprisingly well disciplined. Marrakesh has the largest souks in Morocco. As well as shoes and clothing they stock all the necessities of life and of course bargaining and haggling are the norm! Daily life in the souks is dominated by trade. They are a vital meeting place and trading centre for the farmers of the High Atlas. Those who wish to experience Moroccan daily life can do so here and a stroll through the narrow alleys taking in the city's sounds and aromas explains far more than any travel guide. Place Jemaa El-Fna is the 'Square Of The Beheaded' and is Marrakesh's most famous attraction with snake charmers, musicians and storytellers. In 2001 the Square Of The Beheaded was designated by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. Built in 1158, the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosquee is the symbol of the city. The seventy seven metre tall sandstone minaret served as the model for the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat and most of it was built by Spanish prisoners of war. Marrakesh is an historic bridge that unites both urban and nomadic cultures - an exotic gateway to Africa and a captivating window to Europe!

VPG-DVD-173 - VANCOUVER Vancouver is the third largest city in Canada and one of the most beautiful on the American continent, a dynamic metropolis set in a beautiful location with a temperate climate throughout the year. Close to the harbour area the city's skyscrapers have proliferated in recent years. The capital of the southwestern province of British Columbia has developed into an economic centre of renown. The city's oldest buildings were built less than a hundred years ago because the former wooden houses of old Vancouver were destroyed by fire. Several buildings reflect the origin of their inhabitants and are similar to those in the United States and Europe. Inspired by the Colosseum in Rome, an elegant structure of pink stone and glass, Canada Place, is located in the busy centre of the new harbour district and is also the city's most recent landmark. Close by is Harbour Centre, a modern skyscraper complex with a shopping centre and a Skylift to the top floor. A glass elevator transports visitors to a one hundred and sixty seven-metre high observation platform where the view across the city, harbour and bay is overwhelming. The exciting Skytrain is the city's most popular means of transport, an ultra-modern train built on posts that zig zags its way through the city. Each of the city's most important destinations are easily accessible and it has reduced the city's traffic problems considerably. For the World Exhibition of 1986, on the edge of Chinatown gardeners and craftsmen from Suzhou in China established Canada's first classical Chinese garden, the Doctor Sun Yat Sen Garden. Its ponds, bridges and small pavilions are similar to those in China, masterpieces of Far Eastern garden design. Everything in Vancouver is youthful, attractive and dynamic, a place in which Canadian politeness unites with the Pacific way of life!

VPG-DVD-200 - RAJASTHAN Rajasthan, Land Of Kings and one of the most unique and colourful provinces in northern India on the border with Pakistan. The barren desert landscape was once the home of the Rajputes that ruled over the land for more than a thousand years. Our journey begins in Jaipur, the Pink City, where the buildings consist of the reddish stone of the surrounding landscape. Much to the surprise of tourists the local people continue to use the elephant as a means of transport in this splendid trading town. However, modern traffic with its cars, tuk-tuk taxis and countless bicycles has also found its way into this fairytale-like city. An artificial lake suddenly appears in the centre of which is the beautiful Jal Mahal Castle. Amid the arid, rocky landscape is the original residence of the Rajputes clan, the Amber Fort that is strategically situated within rock walls. The small town of Churu is flanked on both its south and west sides by sand dunes. It is believed that it was founded in 1563 by the Jats. It subsequently became important as the supplier of caravans for the Poddar family that brought the village a long period of prosperity. The white temples of Ranakpur are the sanctuaries of the Jains, situated in a picturesque valley to the west of the Aravalli Mountains north of Udaipur. Rajasthan is the Land Of The Maharajas in all its splendour: a living fairy-tale beneath the desert sky.

VPG-DVD-134 - LOS ANGELES Los Angeles is synonymous with Hollywood, and Beverly Hills is its famous suburb with neat parks and blossoming flower beds. There's also the Sidewalk of Fame, Mann's Chinese Theatre and Rodeo Drive, the most exclusive shopping mile in the world. Everything in Hollywood is different, including a cemetery of the famous. Even in the funeral hall with its larger-than-life religious figures it is as though it is all part of a fantastic film set. Universal Studios is the largest and most active film and television studio in the world as well as a popular family day out being one of the most successful amusement parks in the USA and its many famous film sets are instantly recognisable. Since its opening in1955, Disneyland has become a worldwide phenomenon. The world's original and longest surviving theme park provides an enchanting mix of shows, attractions and well known cartoon characters and the journey through Toontown on its bumpy tramway is a stimulating experience for both young and old. At weekends, those who want to see but, above all, be seen, make for Venice Beach. The sandy beach is relaxing and its many pavements are popular with joggers and roller skaters alike. Even by Los Angeles standards, the performers on Muscle Beach are quite outrageous and while some body-builders lift thousands of kilos, others shamelessly display their supreme egos by strutting like conceited peacocks! Built in 1908, Santa Monica Pier is reminiscent of the hazy lazy seaside resorts of the 1920's. Extending into the water some 300 metres, the pier's amusement park is constantly bursting with life, with its big wheel, swings and richly- decorated carousel. Once the most celebrated residential area of the rich and famous, today Sunset Boulevard is a busy main traffic artery. At night, when brash neon signs shine out their colourful animated messages, this famous boulevard still possesses a unique atmosphere. Los Angeles is the enormous multicultural city on America's West Coast in which film stars, earthquakes and joie de vivre are essential to life itself!

VPG-DVD-214 - KÓS Kós is an historic island oasis beneath the Greek sun. Not the largest of the Dodekannissa Islands but certainly one of its most fascinating, with endless sandy beaches and an ancient heritage. The capital of the island is Chora Kós and for two thousand years it has been the nerve centre of the island. The city once suffered devastating earthquakes and the island was plagued by numerous invaders including the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, the Knights of St. John and finally, the Turks. The Platia Eleftherìas is the main square of today's Kós and contains the Archaeological Museum that is housed in a futuristic looking Italian building that dates back to the 1930's. Four kilometres from the city high in the Dikeos Mountains is one of the island's most important sights, the Asklipion, an ancient hospital and sanctuary. A winding road leads to the village of Kéfalos that from below looks like a small fortified complex. Its white houses and narrow alleys are free of traffic and it's as though time has stood still. Formerly a village of fishermen, agriculture is now the main source of income for the local people. Kéfalos has much historical significance as it was built on the ruins of the first capital of the island and Hypocrates was born here in 460 B.C. Antimáchia Castle was built in the 13th century by the Venetians and later expanded by the Knights Of St. John. Its mighty external walls are most impressive but only a few cisterns and two small chapels remain. Fascinating landscapes and the historic monuments of many époques make the Greek island of Kós a sparkling jewel of the Aegean.

OTT-DVD-118 - On Tour... SHEKHAWATI Caravan Trail In RajasthanSHEKAWATI Shekawati, the North Indian region of Rajasthan, was once an important trading route to China. The amazing wealth of the majarajas can still be experienced as their former palaces have now been transformed into luxury hotels. The journey through this exotic land begins in Sikar, a place that still brings to mind the splendour of bygone times. The streets and lanes of this small town are always busy and it is as though half the population is making its way through the town. Lorries and camel wagons dominate the streets and the unpredictable nature of Indian traffic is a constant challenge. Havelis, the exquisite homes of the city's former traders, are architectural gems. The dwelling houses of Sikar's wealthy traders have retained their former glory and are built of yellow sandstone. The word 'havelis' is derived from the Persian language and means 'encircled square'. The walls protect the building from the searing heat and also uninvited guests. In the 18th century Churu was one of the most important stops along the caravan route. The mighty Poddar Family dominated the supply of provisions to the travelling traders. Due to punitive taxes they moved their business to Ramgarh thus Churu gradually fell into decay but with the arrival of the British the town prospered once again. Each city in the Shekawati region is like something from a movie set and it would not be at all surprising if a film crew suddenly appeared from behind one of the magnificent facades! The splendour of the region's havelis and royal palaces has turned this journey into an unforgettable adventure. Shekawati is truly a golden step into a lost age.

GTR-DVD-1096 - Hallstatt is located on the shores of a sleepy Austrian lake, surrounded by high hills and the Dachstein Mountain Range. Similar to a fjord, Hallstatt Lake extends in front of the picturesque village that was one of the earliest and most unique settlements in this region. Due to the early discovery of large salt deposits in the surrounding mountains, the village has a proud history that dates back a thousand years and archaeology has revealed that this area was inhabited from around five thousand years B.C. Long before Christianity came to Salzkammergut and prior to any churches being built, an independent prehistoric culture evolved. The village contains a rich variety of historic buildings and its churches contain precious works of art such as a Late Gothic altar created by Leonhard Astl. The old marketplace and fountain is crowned by a trinity column that dates back to 1744. The welcoming facades of the dwellings have graced this atmospheric village since the 16th century and the market probably dates back to the 14th century. In 1891 Lake Street played a vital role for the village's busy commercial traffic and the impressive Countryside and Pre-History Museum displays the history of salt mining in the area and its importance to the village. In 1846 the Salinen civil servant, Johann Georg Ramsauer, made a sensational discovery when he discovered a prehistoric burial ground in the village. During seventeen years of excavation a total of twenty thousand objects were discovered in nine hundred and eighty graves. These discoveries subsequently led to the establishment of Hallstatt's intriguing and fascinating culture.
