VPG-DVD-157 - YUNNAN Kunming is located in the Chinese province of Yunnan in south west China. The Buddhist temple of Ykan Ton Si dates back to the Tang Dynasty. The design of the city's largest temple complex was influenced by many diverse ethnic groups. The highlight of the complex is a lake in the middle of which a number of bridges lead to an octagonal pavilion. The Temple Of Total Penetration (yes, that's it's name!) is a tranquil and peaceful haven amid the busy alleys of Kunming's old town. In the west of Yunnan Province there are magnificent views from Xi Shan Mountain across Dian Lake and nestling among the rocks there are numerous temples that were once the scene of ritual sacrifice. On the downward journey the temples loom larger and larger while earthenware images of Buddha depict various stages of life. Yunnan's most famous site is the unique Stone Forest of Shi Lin. Its limestone rock originated from a long since dried--up ocean when the elements set to work on creating its fantastic and bizarre forms. The most amazing formations were given dramatic names such as The Sea Of Fire, Dragon's Tooth and Heavenly Sword. Pagodas, columns and strange flowers appear to rise from the rock and to facilitate access, tunnels and paths have been cut into the rock face. The Venice Of The Far East is the nickname of the ancient Chinese city of Lijiang in the northwest of Yunnan Province. The picturesque centre of the old town of Dayan is an architectural gem. Three rivers and several small creeks flow through the historic cit and there are various splendid stone bridges date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Buy Shan is a typical village of the region. Just as it was hundreds of years ago with farmers slowly leading their ox wagons through the village. The houses were built over a period of more than two hundred year between the Ming and Qing Dynasties in 14 and 16 A.D. Yunnan Province - place of simplicity, exquisite culture and spectacular natural wonders!

OTT-DVD-137 - Situated in the extreme north of Europe the Lofoten have always been a special place. The picturesque beauty of this group of islands located just off the Norwegian coast has lost nothing of its age old fascination and colourful sense of history. With fourteen hundred inhabitants Stamsund is the main fishing village of the archipelago. Although the surrounding fishing grounds contain an abundance of fish the industry that once flourished here is not as prosperous as it once was. Now for much of the population tourism provides a lucrative alternative to the traditional fishing industry of bygone times and the five large main islands of the Lofoten have a perfect infrastructure and are connected with each other by way of various bridges and tunnels. The small village of Nusfjord is located in front of a captivating backdrop of mountains. Due to its unique location it looks more like a high mountain village than a fishing settlement. The village is both an historical as well as a cultural treasure and almost all of its buildings date back to the nineteenth century when its entire population worked in the fishing industry. At the end of the Lofot Highway at the southern point of Moskenesøy Island is the picturesque village of Å. The red of the houses adds interesting contrast to the surroundings as they are mainly dominated by grey rock. Tourists come to this village to visit two museums: the Stockfishmuseum and the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum. It became well known due to its unusual name and the inhabitants of Å are proud of the fact that their village has the shortest name in the world. The beautiful unspoiled landscape of these 'Islands Of The Gods' is full of captivating mystique and it no wonder that the Vikings also romanticised about their natural splendour.

NPM-DVD-120 - Nature Parks: ARCHES PARK UtahAround 8 kilometres north of the small town of Moab in the State of Utah, is the entrance to one of the most famous national parks in the United States, Arches Park, a national park that owes its remarkable popularity to its gigantic sandstone arches of which there are approximately 2000. Covering 300 square kilometres, the park is relatively small but it is one of the USA's most popular nature reservations. From Courthouse Towers with its outstanding rock formations there's a 38 kilometre panoramic route known as Scenic Drive that takes in the rocky sand dunes of Petrified Dunes which are evidence that the park owes much of its geological phenomena to its famous stone arches. Balanced Rock is one of the park's main attractions. Weighing around 3,600 tons, the sandstone rock balances precipitously at a height of 22 metres supported on a fragile looking foundation. Close to Cache Valley is the massive, isolated stone structure of Delicate Arch. Although it appears to be fragile it has been proudly standing close to the nearby valley since prehistoric times. The Devil's Garden Trailhead leads to a large collection of the most beautiful stone arches. With the passage of time, ice forced apart the softer layers of stone and countless years of relentless erosion created these natural arches along with all the other bizarre rock formations of the plateau. Created by the two elements of water and air that have cut deep into the sandstone, Tunnel Arch is the first arch that can be seen when walking through "Devil's Garden". This natural stone arch is so smooth that it could easily be compared with a modern Man-made tunnel. A few metres away there's another small opening in the rock wall, Tunnel Arch, where the surrounding vegetation creates a romantic 'Wild West' atmosphere. In this incredible land of sandstone arches, the fascinating rock formations and unique beauty of Arches Park is surely one of the most spectacular sights in the natural world.

GTR-DVD-1202 - The Semmering Railroad is a remarkable alpine railway line that has been operating in Austria for a hundred and fifty years. Construction of a railroad across mountain terrain posed a major problem but the Semmering Mountain Railway that embarked from Payerbach overcame all obstacles. One of the most impressive architectural achievements of the railroad is the two hundred and twenty seven metre long and twenty four metre high Schwarza Viaduct. The railway line to the Semmering Pass contains sixteen viaducts, more than a hundred bridges and fifteen tunnels. A huge quantity of manpower was used to create it with twenty thousand workers engaged to complete the daunting task. However, the line was inaugurated after only six years of construction. Steam trains were eventually replaced by electric trains but the railway itself has hardly changed at all and continues to form part of a fascinating and irresistible combination of both technology and Nature. Extending for nearly one and a half kilometres, the historic centre of Budapest and its impressive Royal Palace tower proudly over the banks of the Danube. Budapest's castle district has developed into the Hungarian capital's main attraction, most notably, Fishermen's Bastion that was built between 1890 and 1905. The greater part of the Gothic, Matthias Cathedral, dates back to the 19th century but of the 16th century buildings, only their foundations remain. Following its original construction in the 14th century, Matthias Cathedral became the setting of several royal coronations. Due to numerous military conflicts, the entire Gothic area of the city was destroyed. The buildings and facades that can be seen today belong mainly to the Hungarian Baroque era. Deep underground, a several kilometre long maze cuts through the city's hill. The basements of many buildings are connected to this tunnel system, therefore allowing visitors easy access to a seemingly never-ending system of fascinating passages. The Turkish conquerors used these subterranean passages and caves, that were created among thermal springs and waterways, and extended them for military use. During the hours of evening, Buda's streets and archways radiate a magnificent light that is a wonderful contrast to the wonderful ambience of this city during the day. WTF-DVD-BRIT - "Britain's Gentle Highway"... a canal adventure in England, Scotland & Wales Filmed and produced by Fran & Brooke ReidelbergerScripted and narrated by Fran Reidelberger Started in the mid-1700s, they served as the internal transportation system for Great Britain's "Industrial Revolution". By the early 19th Century, they crisscrossed Britain covering more than 5,000 miles through major cities and rural hamlets. "They", in this case, are the canals of England, Scotland and Wales. Abandoned by industry today, the canals have become a playground for holiday boaters as well as "home" for many retirees who live year round on their floating homes. In re-visiting and re-filming this unusual and colorful part of Britain, film producers Fran and Brooke Reidelberger hire an old-fashioned canal boat to travel in the wake of history, discover modern engineering marvels, and enjoy the timeless British countryside. · Start at Beeston Castle Wharf in Northwest England at a canal boatyard built in 1775, a year before the birth of the United States. Charles Hardern and family run a small fleet of rental boats and a substantial boat repair facility, both highly regarded. · Climb a flight of four locks at Hurlston -- operating the locks yourself -- and learn about a major water supply for the canal system. · Meet Robert Brown, a retired school teacher who spends his retirement years painting canal scenes. · Visit the Cadbury Company in the Welsh town of Chirk to watch cocoa beans turned into chocolate delicacies. · Cross the Pontcysllte Aqueduct, 1,000 feet long and 126 feet above the Welsh River Dee. · Travel under lift bridges and through a one-lane tunnel -- with no lights! · Attend the International Music Festival in Lllangollen, Wales. · Tour the ancient walled city of Chester with classic half-timbered buildings, Roman history, and modern shops. · Enjoy wildlife and wild flowers during a misty morning along the Shropshire Union Canal.· Ride and learn about the Anderton Lift, a mechanical monster first built by the Victorians to move boats 50 feet up and down between the Weaver River and the Trent and Mersey Canal. The lift was altered over time, abandoned in the late 20th Century, and only recently rebuilt and re-opened as an aide for recreational boaters.· Watch talented, modern day craftsmen at Stoke-on-Trent as they use Josiah Wedgwood's priceless formulas to produce elegant pieces of pottery that we call "Wedgwood" today. · Discover a "secret" bunker near Nantwich. The 35,000 square foot underground facility was designed as a center for regional government in case of nuclear attack in the 1950s. It was recently declassified and opened to the public for tours.
