VPG-DVD-117 - MARRAKESH Marrakesh, the 'red pearl' of Morocco was founded by Youssef Ben Tachfin in 1602. It is one of the country's four Royal Cities. Up to the beginning of the 20th century the city was a trading centre for both the north of Morocco and the Sahara and the monarchs of various dynasties made Marrakesh their capital city. The large souks of Marrakesh's Medina are divided into numerous sections and stock just about everything known to Man! In spite of the city's apparent calm there is much activity and the traffic is surprisingly well disciplined. Marrakesh has the largest souks in Morocco. As well as shoes and clothing they stock all the necessities of life and of course bargaining and haggling are the norm! Daily life in the souks is dominated by trade. They are a vital meeting place and trading centre for the farmers of the High Atlas. Those who wish to experience Moroccan daily life can do so here and a stroll through the narrow alleys taking in the city's sounds and aromas explains far more than any travel guide. Place Jemaa El-Fna is the 'Square Of The Beheaded' and is Marrakesh's most famous attraction with snake charmers, musicians and storytellers. In 2001 the Square Of The Beheaded was designated by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. Built in 1158, the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosquee is the symbol of the city. The seventy seven metre tall sandstone minaret served as the model for the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat and most of it was built by Spanish prisoners of war. Marrakesh is an historic bridge that unites both urban and nomadic cultures - an exotic gateway to Africa and a captivating window to Europe!

NPM-DVD-116 - Nature Parks NAIVASHA KenyaSurrounded by the picturesque mountain range of Mount Longonot and located one thousand nine hundred metres above sea level, is Lake Naivasha, the highest and most beautiful lake in Kenya's Rift Valley. The Lake Naivasha region was made famous by the British painter and conservationist, Joy Adamson, who wrote the novel, Born Free, in the area. The Lake Naivasha Country Club was inaugurated in 1937. It was then called the Lake Hotel and was an important stop on the journey between Durban and London. In what is now the country club's park, passengers once disembarked from flying boats while travelling to Nairobi, situated a hundred kilometres from Lake Naivasha. In addition to great numbers of wild geese, Lake Naivasha is home to many rare and spectacular species of bird such as marabu and cormorant and the pelican also finds much nourishment in the five metre deep lake. Despite their thorny branches the leaves and flowers of the acacia trees on Crescent Island are an important source of nourishment for several animals. The island is situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Lake Naivasha and is in full view of the two thousand seven hundred and seventy-six metre high summit of dormant volcano, Mount Longonot. As the sun begins to set in the twilight hours and creates a colourful natural spectacle in the sky, it is clear why Lake Naivasha has the reputation of being one of the most beautiful of all the lakes in Kenya's Rift Valley.

GTR-DVD-1081 - Kairouan is the only great Tunisian city whose history is more recent than antiquity. In 671 A.D. a camp known as a 'Kairouan' settled on what is the city's urban area of today and despite the heat and scarcity of water this location had great strategic value. The massive minaret of the Great Mosque is 35 metres high and is the most important Islamic building in Tunis. For many years it has been the structural model for subsequent generations of Maurice architects. The ancient columns and elegant decoration of the mosque's interior highlight its importance in the Islamic world. Two further buildings that are important to Islam are situated on the North Western outskirts of Kairouan: the Barbier Mosque and the Sidi Sahab Mausoleum which date back to the 17th century. They are located above the grave of a companion of the Prophet Mohammed. In addition to Mecca, Medina And Jerusalem, Kairouan is one of the four most important cities in Islam and since it was first established during the 7th century, the city's life has been continuously determined by religious faith. GTR-DVD-1124 - The picturesque harbour of Iraklion welcomes those arriving by ship at Crete's greatest city that is also the fourth largest harbour in Greece. In common with much of the history of this city, the imposing castle located at the harbour dates back to Venetian times and was built between 1523 and 1540. Today the archaeological search for ruins from the time of the ancient Minoers has become increasingly more important. In addition, work on the ruins that date from the earlier history of the town, when it was ruled by Turkey, has also gained momentum. The remains that date back to Venetian rule, such as some sections of the massive town wall and the Loggia, are part of the town's most well preserved buildings. Built between 1626 and 1628, with its classic beauty the Venetian Loggia is one of the city's most beautiful buildings. During the 17th century the aristocracy used this building as a kind of social meeting place, a club house and celebration hall. Today, it is considered to be a fine example of traditional Venetian architecture. The Morosini Fountain dates back to Venice's prosperous years. It was once part of the town's urban water supply and was named after an important civil servant. Although the city has moved with the times and developed into an important centre of tourism, it has managed to retain a significant part of its history. Thus the old town of Iraklion owes its unique flair to the splendid architectural relics of the Venetians.
