VPG-DVD-227 - SALT LAKE CITY What Mecca is to the Moslems and Rome is to the Catholics is what Salt Lake City is to the Mormons and it is the capital of the U.S. federal state of Utah. Four mighty walls surround the four hectare area in the middle of the old town, the centre of the Mormon Church, Temple Square. It is decorated with flowers and contains the most important sacred buildings of the Mormon community such as the Salt Lake Temple, The Tabernacle and Conference Centre. Joseph Smith was fifteen years old when he had his first vision. The angel MORINI appeared to him and gave him a number of sacred texts that led to the foundation of the Mormon church. A sacred land was established and a settlement created within the desert. The largest sanctuary and centre of the Mormon faith is the Salt Lake Temple. Constructed of stone its use is restricted to the Mormon religion. It was built between 1853 and 1893 in grey granite New Gothic style with six towers, its main one being sixty eight metres high. Construction of the Cathedral Of The Madeleine began in 1900 and was completed in 1909, a Christian building whose exterior is of Romantic design and with a Gothic interior. Once both faith and diligence established this remarkable place. Since then Salt Lake City has become the centre of a hugely successful religious empire.

TMT-DVD-116 - MONUMENT VALLEY Monument Valley is situated on the border of the North American states of Arizona and Utah in a region of magnificent freestanding sandstone rocks that tower 1000 feet above the desert. More than 200 million years ago the area was covered by ocean on the bed of which were deep deposits of mud which turned into slate and as the sea bed rose again the water drained away and cracks and fissures were formed and a vast sandstone plain was created. In the heart of the Navajo Reservation, with its magical rock formations which in the evening sun glow a burning, indelible red, it's easy to understand why Nature played such an important part in the lives of its native inhabitants. A sacred atmosphere can be felt everywhere and the existence of ghosts is suddenly all too possible.

TMT-DVD-115 - BRYCE CANYON Located in the south of the US Federal State of Utah, Bryce Canyon National Park attracts nature lovers from all over the world. One hundred and forty five square kilometres of pure nature overwhelms those who experience it. Millions of years ago, due to extreme pressure from beneath it, the Earth's crust cracked and this wonderful landscape was created, a gigantic amphitheatre of red stone scattered with a thousand rock needles that tower into the sky. Fantastic rock columns known as 'hoodoos' rise upward like towering cathedrals and great skyscrapers, conveying both the feeling of eternity and the majestic might of Nature. The extraordinary fascination of this landscape stems from the richness of its colours and unusual formations. These bizarre creations seem to defy the laws of gravity and it is difficult to believe that it was Nature, not Man, that created them.

NPM-DVD-120 - Nature Parks: ARCHES PARK UtahAround 8 kilometres north of the small town of Moab in the State of Utah, is the entrance to one of the most famous national parks in the United States, Arches Park, a national park that owes its remarkable popularity to its gigantic sandstone arches of which there are approximately 2000. Covering 300 square kilometres, the park is relatively small but it is one of the USA's most popular nature reservations. From Courthouse Towers with its outstanding rock formations there's a 38 kilometre panoramic route known as Scenic Drive that takes in the rocky sand dunes of Petrified Dunes which are evidence that the park owes much of its geological phenomena to its famous stone arches. Balanced Rock is one of the park's main attractions. Weighing around 3,600 tons, the sandstone rock balances precipitously at a height of 22 metres supported on a fragile looking foundation. Close to Cache Valley is the massive, isolated stone structure of Delicate Arch. Although it appears to be fragile it has been proudly standing close to the nearby valley since prehistoric times. The Devil's Garden Trailhead leads to a large collection of the most beautiful stone arches. With the passage of time, ice forced apart the softer layers of stone and countless years of relentless erosion created these natural arches along with all the other bizarre rock formations of the plateau. Created by the two elements of water and air that have cut deep into the sandstone, Tunnel Arch is the first arch that can be seen when walking through "Devil's Garden". This natural stone arch is so smooth that it could easily be compared with a modern Man-made tunnel. A few metres away there's another small opening in the rock wall, Tunnel Arch, where the surrounding vegetation creates a romantic 'Wild West' atmosphere. In this incredible land of sandstone arches, the fascinating rock formations and unique beauty of Arches Park is surely one of the most spectacular sights in the natural world.

NPM-DVD-117 - Nature Parks CANYONLANDS PARK UtahLocated in the south east of the U.S. State of Utah, the Canyonlands National Park is like something from another world with steep river valleys many hundreds of metres deep that wind majestically through a breathtaking landscape. The landscape of the high plateau is dominated by stone and contains a type of desert vegetation that is typical of Utah's wide open spaces. Tall trees are few and far between but the small rugged trees that grow on less nutrient ground have adjusted to the region's harsh climate. During dry summers the temperature frequently reaches more than 35 degrees, thus scant tufts of grass are the most frequent form of vegetation. The banks of both the Green River and Colorado River provide a perfect habitat for several domestic bird species such as ravens, buzzards, owls, heron and geese, while swallows and eagles nest on the higher terrain. Among all the natural beauty there are also numerous traces of human habitation that date from time immemorial that, in the southern section of the park, include the rock paintings and caves of the ancient Fremont People. Each of the numerous textures of the park's sandstone has been subjected to various degrees of erosion that has created a multitude of fascinating natural stone 'sculptures'. Whether it's the Island In The Sky, the Needles or the almost inaccessible Maze area, each section of the park is well worth a visit and for admirers of the American Wild West, this is the place to be! Despite its exceptional and remarkable natural beauty, the vast expanse of Canyonlands is still a well kept secret. A marvellous wonder of majestic Nature.

NPM-DVD-102 - Nature Parks BRYCE CANYON UtahIn the south of the US federal state of UTAH, there's a destination that attracts nature lovers from all over the world: Bryce Canyon National Park, 145 square kilometres of pure nature. Millions of years ago, due to extreme subterranean pressure, the Earth's surface cracked and a landscape was created that is without equal, a gigantic amphitheatre of red stone scattered with a thousand rock needles that tower toward the sky. Typical of Bryce, the canyon's fantastic and bizarre „hoodoos" were created by natural erosion and rise ever upward like towering cathedrals and great skyscrapers, conveying a sense of eternity. The highest point of the park reaches a height of over 2000 metres and contains pines and juniper trees whereas, lower down, there are poplars and willows. In contrast to other canyons, Bryce is not a ravine. It is reminiscent of an amphitheatre that has been dug out of soft limestone. Its rock formations, which originally formed on the seabed, contain large quantities of minerals that produce a fascinating array of colour. Iron oxide is responsible for the strong red tones, copper produces the green hues and manganese adds deep violet. With its various lighting effects, the sun continuously casts a spell on the rocky terrain of this mystical place. This setting of stone and colour infatuates the observer and seduces his imagination and it's easy to believe that one is in another galaxy. The landscape suggests another planet, an unknown world, Light Years away from Earth, and a Black Hole away from civilisation as we know it. The semi-fanciful rock formations are reminiscent of the irregularly-shaped buildings in fairy-tales, sagas and actual reality. Thus this architecture shaped by nature has been given names such as 'Thor's Hammer' and 'Gulliver's Castle' and it has also been likened to Hindu temples and even Wall Street. But the magical fact is...this landscape is a natural reality!

7DY-DVD-158 - The State of Utah is located in the south west of the United States of America is a a land of endless horizons, canyons, deserts and big open spaces. What Mecca is to the Moslems and Rome is to the Catholics is what Salt Lake City is to the Mormons. It is also the capital of the U.S. federal state of Utah. The prosperous city also contains many of those of other faiths but the highly influential Mormon church makes most of the region's political decisions. The administrative HQ of the world wide active Mormon church is, at a hundred and twenty eight metres high, the city's tallest building. The religion's financial might and strict administration still exist today. Each member has to contribute one tenth of his or her income thus the Council Of The Twelve Apostles and the church presidency are a wealthy multinational concern. The Bonneville Salt Flats are located next to Great Salt Lake, a huge area covered by salt that is one of the flattest areas in the world. The lake was once used for motor sports and on the Salt Flats racing drivers in rocket-shaped cars attempted to beat one land speed record after the other. Zion National Park is not only a place of natural history as signs of human habitation have also been discovered here. Several of the park's archaeological sites indicate that Man inhabited this region more than two thousand years ago. It is believed that its earliest prehistoric inhabitants were the legendary Anasazi Indians, followed by the Paiute Tribe. This land of red rock, the Great Salt Lake and remarkable canyons is a wonderful world at the edge of civilization created by the might of natural forces. A desert land where water is vital and the supply of which is now assured by modern technology. All this is Utah, a dream world of deep canyons and vast open spaces.
