GTR-DVD-1257 - Near to Vienna is a place where the sky meets with the earth. For almost nine hundred years the Stift Klosterneuburg Monastery has had a special relationship in the spiritual, sacred and cultural life of Austria. Its architecture dates back to the Baroque era and the rule of Emperor Karl The Sixth. In the twelfth century, church architecture was based upon Italian design. At that time a castle was also built at this location for the sponsor of the monastery, Leopold The Pious. In addition to its fine sacred architecture the Stift Klosterneuburg enchants due to its worldly side that can be seen in the emperor's private rooms which demonstrate the luxurious lifestyle of the Habsburgers whose influence was at its zenith during the reign of Karl The Sixth. The monastery's most valuable possession and also one of the most impressive works of art of the Middle Ages is the Verduner Altar that was named after the artist, Nikolaus Of Verdun, and was completed in 1181. The large quantity of precious works of religious art and fascinating historic objects that date from the Habsburger Dynasty underline the feeling that the Stift Klosterneuburg is indeed a place where the sky meets with the earth! GTR-DVD-1178 - As with almost anywhere within the Wachau, the clocks of the dreamy town of Stein seem to run a little slower than in other parts of Austria. Its well preserved ensemble of old houses is not uncommon and the Wachau region enjoys a good reputation for its fine historic treasures and elegant buildings. Krems is like a fairytale town. The wrought iron signs on its buildings and its wonderful historic atmosphere are truly captivating. The former stronghold and subsequent rival of Vienna contains several beautiful lanes and imposing buildings that reflect the wealth of its former citizens. Amid the vast terraces of the Wachau vineyards is the village of Weissenkirchen in which several hospitable inns provide their customers with an ideal opportunity to sample the wines of this region. Winegrowing has a long tradition in this section of the Danube and the area between Krems and Melk is one of the oldest cultivated landscapes in Austria. The Wachau is a landscape full of warmth as well as being steeped in history and age old traditions. GTR-DVD-1057 - Versailles was the former palace and dream castle of the French 'Sun King', Louis the Fourteenth. The history of Versailles covers the rise and fall of the Bourbons whose reign covered the most remarkable period of French history. Here, the French king lavishly entertained the decadent nobility, oblivious to the unrest caused by their false pride, supreme arrogance and almost total disregard for the poverty of the French people that would eventually lead to Revolution.Magnificent fountains decorate the palace's huge park that was created by 35,000 workers, a hundred hectares of ingenious garden design with a strict symmetry of wide star-shaped garden paths that seem to be without end. Drawn by four horses, the god Apollo emerges from the waters of a fountain. This and further fountains and ponds were designed by Tuby and Lenotre, and are masterpieces of both garden design and the sculptor`s art. Playful figures and statues adorn the park's many paths and even today emanate the joy and merriment of past days. Construction of the royal palace was completed some time after that of the gardens. The palace was to be the epitome of majestic splendour and was designed to accommodate the entire French Court: 20,000 people! Containing more than 700 lavish rooms, the palace is a unique architectural masterpiece. In the opulence of the private rooms there are grand four-poster beds and splendid canopies. Ceiling paintings, gold and marble intarsia, carvings, goblins and superb crystal chandeliers are an indication of some of the king's creative ideas that Lebrun realised in exemplary style. Versailles served as the model for several European palaces such as those in Potsdam, Vienna and St. Petersburg. However, it continues to be a unique monument of unashamed splendour and supreme opulence. GTR-DVD-1048 - The Stephansdom in Vienna is one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in the world. The oldest sections of its façade, the Heidentürme and Riesentor, are of Romanic origin. They date back to 1260 A.D. during the reign of King Ottokar The Second of Bohemia. But it was left to a member of the Habsburg royal family to complete the construction of the cathedral. The dark and mysterious catacombs located beneath the cathedral contain the remains of many former Habsburg sovereigns and up until 1783 the underground passages were also used for the burial of Viennese commoners. The significance of the building was not only due to its magnificent works of art but from 1469 it played an increasingly important role and thus became a Bishop and Cathedral Church. By creating its outstanding pulpit, cathedral master builder Anton Pilgram made himself immortal as a 'Fenstergucker'. During the Baroque period the building was severely neglected. However, the beginning of the 19th century saw the renewal and strengthening of the cathedral. Having survived all the tumult of past centuries, this unique building with its proud, tall towers that rise above Vienna, has truly withstood the test of time.
