VPG-DVD-171 - BAHAMAS Nassau is the capital of the island of New Providence which is one of the many islands of the Bahaman archipelago that extends for almost a thousand kilometres between Cuba and Florida in the Atlantic Ocean. New Providence is the commercial and political centre and is more commonly known as the Bahamas. Built between 1805 and 1813 in typical American southern style, the pink-coloured buildings of Parliament Square are the headquarters of the Bahamian government. In front of the white columned Neo-Classical parliament building is a noble statue of the English queen, Victoria, as a young girl. The colourful Caribbean Straw Market is a lively place. There are lots of fascinating things to see including skilful craftsmen who carve traditional objects from mahogany. Bags, baskets and hats made of straw are offered as souvenirs. Along the coast there are several caves in which pirates once hid their ill-gotten gains or argued over buried treasure. During the Stone Age the Arawak Indians lived in the caves. Cable Beach boasts a multitude of exquisite modern hotel complexes that cater for every need and several of them possess a casino. Naturally, each has its own lavish bathing areas and a vast choice of exciting entertainment. Thus it's not too difficult to understand why British secret agent 007 often chose these islands for his investigations! The Bahamas: the very name conjures up remote sandy beaches and turquoise blue water, romantic sunsets and tropical nights. A place where fantastic dreams become wonderful reality.

TMT-DVD-116 - MONUMENT VALLEY Monument Valley is situated on the border of the North American states of Arizona and Utah in a region of magnificent freestanding sandstone rocks that tower 1000 feet above the desert. More than 200 million years ago the area was covered by ocean on the bed of which were deep deposits of mud which turned into slate and as the sea bed rose again the water drained away and cracks and fissures were formed and a vast sandstone plain was created. In the heart of the Navajo Reservation, with its magical rock formations which in the evening sun glow a burning, indelible red, it's easy to understand why Nature played such an important part in the lives of its native inhabitants. A sacred atmosphere can be felt everywhere and the existence of ghosts is suddenly all too possible.

NPM-DVD-116 - Nature Parks NAIVASHA KenyaSurrounded by the picturesque mountain range of Mount Longonot and located one thousand nine hundred metres above sea level, is Lake Naivasha, the highest and most beautiful lake in Kenya's Rift Valley. The Lake Naivasha region was made famous by the British painter and conservationist, Joy Adamson, who wrote the novel, Born Free, in the area. The Lake Naivasha Country Club was inaugurated in 1937. It was then called the Lake Hotel and was an important stop on the journey between Durban and London. In what is now the country club's park, passengers once disembarked from flying boats while travelling to Nairobi, situated a hundred kilometres from Lake Naivasha. In addition to great numbers of wild geese, Lake Naivasha is home to many rare and spectacular species of bird such as marabu and cormorant and the pelican also finds much nourishment in the five metre deep lake. Despite their thorny branches the leaves and flowers of the acacia trees on Crescent Island are an important source of nourishment for several animals. The island is situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Lake Naivasha and is in full view of the two thousand seven hundred and seventy-six metre high summit of dormant volcano, Mount Longonot. As the sun begins to set in the twilight hours and creates a colourful natural spectacle in the sky, it is clear why Lake Naivasha has the reputation of being one of the most beautiful of all the lakes in Kenya's Rift Valley.

NPM-DVD-130 - Five hundred kilometres from Cape Town the surroundings of Knysna have for many years been the main tourist centre of this unique region, a breathtaking coastline, picturesque rivers and untouched forests which have given this magnificent area a unique and unforgettable charm. The Wilderness National Park begins just outside the village of Wilderness, west of Knysna. Because of its two thousand six hundred hectares the park has become an important refuge for many varieties of bird that are threatened by extinction. Located between the Indian Ocean and the Outeniqua Mountains it is an ideal refuge for two hundred and fifty different kinds of birds and small animals. The extraordinary beauty of Knysna Bay has many vantage points. Its eighteen square kilometre lagoon looks like a fantastic lake and the bay's most striking landmark is two mountains that rise up from the sea, the Heads Of Knysna which look like two gigantic stone heads and are the gateway into the lagoon. The Heads Of Knysna are responsible for the fact that over millions of years a biotope was gradually created here that is unique throughout South Africa. In this coastal area there is much vegetation and sclerophyllous plants and these rich natural treasures would alone be good enough reason to visit the Knysna region. The landscape on the section between George and Knysna is one of the finest in South Africa. The long railway bridge that spans the lagoon is a famous architectural landmark of this region and after two and a half hours the trains of the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe arrive at Knysna Station. In Knysna it is possible to continue the journey by way of the many excursion boats and ferries that, when the weather is good, travel to the Heads and various islands. After having experienced the many wonderful natural sights of this magnificent region it is easy to understand why so many refer to it as, The Garden Of Eden, because, like paradise, there is no finer 'garden' than that of South Africa's Knysna!

GTR-DVD-1087 - The magnificent buildings within Mozart's famous city of Salzburg are not the only reason why it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Austria. The Prince Archbishop, Wolf Dietrich, ordered that Salzburg Cathedral be built according to Italian Early Baroque design. It was constructed between 1614 and 1628 on the site of a previous Romanic building. At one time the Getreidegasse served as the main road of the old city and on January 27th 1756, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in house number seven.. 119 metres above the town is one of Middle Europe's most well preserved castles, Hohensalzburg, which covers an area of around 30,000 square metres. The centre of Kapitel Square is dominated by a Schwemme, a fountain that dates back to the 18th century where the city's horses were washed down. There are numerous impressive sacred buildings in the city such as the Baroque Kollegien Church designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer Von Erlach. A fascinating and remarkably attractive park surrounds the Lustschloss Hellbrunn that dates back to both the Manieristic and Early Baroque period. The interior of the palace is as beautiful as its external appearance. Illusionist architectural paintings were a popular device designed to alienate reality. Due to the exquisite taste of the royal archbishops of a glorious age, today Salzburg is one of the most beautiful Baroque cities in Europe. GTR-DVD-1242 - Just fourteen kilometres from Turku is the small, picturesque city of Naantali that is often referred to as Finland's 'Summer City'. Its origins, as well as the name, Naantali, are closely connected with a Birgitten monastery that was founded in 1443. Shortly after the creation of the monastery community of monks and nuns a settlement originated close by.For some years the inhabitants of this small city led a relatively frugal life as when the monastery closed so did the income that was derived from it. Naantali's second financial high season came in the eighteenth century when a professor discovered the healing power of the local spring water. The water of the Viluluoto Spring was thought to have miraculous powers and soon Naantali grew into a famous health resort. The picturesque buildings in the city's historic centre have been lovingly restored. Most of them date back to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In those days many of the buildings were farm houses as their owners earned their living from the land. There is a fascinating abundance of arts and crafts on sale in the many shops that are to be found in the atmospheric lanes of the old town.It is understandable why Naantali is known as Finland's 'Summer City' as well as being a treasure trove of medieval history.Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. GTR-DVD-1066 - In 1062 A.D. the Almovarides Dynasty founded the city of Marrakesh, known as, "The Red Pearl". The colourful Spice Market is only one of several markets, otherwise known as 'souks' where baskets brim over with ginger, saffron, caraway and coriander. The souks are divided into different areas and specialities including various craft workshops in which coppersmiths and potters offer their goods for sale. Even today the bazaars still display the age-old splendour of this important trading city and caravan destination.Snake charmers still captivate curious onlookers and the Jemaa-El-Fna Square with its tricksters, minstrels and other entertainers is one of the oldest open-air variety shows in Africa. Each magnificent sunset shows why Marrakesh was given its nickname of "The Red Pearl", and this city is indeed a fascinating living gem of a time gone by.
