In august of 07. I spent some time in Hervey bay, on a boat, stalking the whales that visit the area. Having spent the winter in the Great Barrier reef, giving birth to their calves, they journey down the coast of Australia returning to the Antarctic for the summer. The vessel was the Moon Dancer, and a small group of us had paid to volunteer to help with the research undertaken by Trish and Wally Franklin PhD

WTF-DVD-ERIE - "The Erie Canal"... a ditch that opened the nation! Filmed and produced by Fran & Brooke Reidelberger Scripted and narrated by Fran Reidelberger Thomas Jefferson called plans to build it "little short of madness". "It" is the Erie Canal in New York State: An engineering marvel in 1825, an economic juggernaut throughout the 19th Century, an increasingly popular recreational delight today. In this all new digital video production, filmmakers Fran and Brooke Reidelberger travel the canal system from Albany to Buffalo, sailing in the wake of history, enjoying the tranquil beauty, attending the festivals, visiting the old canal towns, and wondering what our country would be like if the canal had never been built. TMT-DVD-123 - LEPTIS MAGNA Northern Libya was once where the dramatic history Leptis Magna was created, an ancient metropolis that was the first and thus the oldest Phoenician settlement that formed part of what was later known as Tripolitania. The remains of this city are typically Roman. The second century A.D. brought new prosperity when Septimius Severus, who was born in Leptis Magna, became emperor of the Imperium Romanum. At that time monumental buildings were constructed whose beauty and size was only surpassed by those in Rome itself. The ruins of the very large Severian Basilica highlight the amazing architectural skills of the master builders of those days. The Forum was also built at the time of Septimius Severus and today it is the most imposing area in the ancient city. Artistic Medusa and Gorgon heads adorn the remains of a restored arcade in the Forum.. The city's Amphitheatre that was once the scene of bloody gladiatorial battles and wildlife savagery, also possesses its own special ambience. Leptis Magna was an important port for the export of wild animals from Africa's southern regions, such as elephants, lions and leopards. For many years Leptis Magna was lost to history until it was rediscovered in the twentieth century when it once again revealed much of the magic of its truly glorious past.

NPM-DVD-115 - Nature Parks TSITSIKAMMA South AfricaOne half of the Tsitsikamma Park is located in South Africa's Western Cape and the other in the Eastern Cape. During Europe's winter months many of the world's 830 bird species migrate to South Africa and it's not unusual to come across a meadow that contains hundreds of eye-catching storks and anything from a pygmy shrew that weighs only a few ounces to the elephant that weighs several tons. 20,000 varieties of plants, about 10% of all the plants in the world, grow in South Africa and of these, 8000 are to be found in the Cape region. Tsitsikamma is the country's first National Marine Park, its 65,000 hectares including an 80-kilometre coastline. With 24,000 varieties of flowering plants, South Africa breaks all records. Many kinds of Cape flora have found their way to Europe, such as the geranium, lily and gladioli. The park contains an abundance of cacti of all shapes and sizes and an amazing 600 varieties of heather. Following the coastline is the narrow footpath of the Waterfall Trail, an impressive route that leaves an indelible impression. This section of the Cape region is considered to be one of the world's most beautiful coastlines. For some time, Tolkien lived in Knysna and while visiting this region was inspired to write his world famous novel, The Lord of the Rings. The ancient forests captivate far less poetically ambitious people than Tolkien as each visitor becomes totally immersed in this green fairytale world and soon nurtures a special respect for it. And, who knows, if one looks very closely, perhaps a goblin or a fairy will appear from behind a fern! Well laid-out, easy to cover, and yet unique. The Tsitsikamma National Park provides its visitors with a remarkable blend of tranquillity and adventure.

NPM-DVD-142 - In the north of Tanzania is one of Africa's finest natural landscapes, the Serengeti. From endless grass covered savannahs to dense rain forests the large variety of landscapes as well as many species of wildlife is really quite remarkable. The Massai have retained their age-old traditions and the pastures at the bottom of the Ngorongoro Crater are ideal for their herds of cattle. The two hundred and sixty square kilometre Ngorongoro Crater is not only a wonder of nature but also home to an impressive number of animals. The bottom of the crater is covered with grass and several watering holes provide a perfect habitat for large herds of wild animals. In the second half of the twentieth century two British archaeologists and anthropologists made several striking discoveries in the region. In the Oldupai Canyon they discovered a Hominid skull that made both explorers world famous as the almost two million year old skull was the oldest prehistoric discovery of human existence ever found. Each morning two balloons take off from the Massai Kopjes in the centre of the National Park on a one hour journey above the Serengeti. Depending on wind and weather conditions the balloon rises to an altitude of more than three hundred metres above sea level. The pilots often navigate their balloons close to the ground and just above the treetops when most of the animals run away at the sight of the hot air balloon and the strange sound caused by its burner. Gazelles, gnus and buffalo crowd into their favourite pastureland that is usually located close to various watering holes while vultures are always to be found close to the herds and are always ready to take advantage of a dead or dying animal. The Serengeti - a symbol of a paradise that may not last forever and a world full of primeval beauty and natural wonder.

NPM-DVD-149 - The Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania is a nature reserve of the superlative and as well as being both the oldest and largest game reserve in Africa it is a world of natural beauty and exotic wildlife. Much of Selous is crossed by the Rufuji River and its tributaries and although the region has a relatively small amount of rainfall each year the Rufuji contains more water than most other rivers in East Africa. Prior to the establishment of the game reserve this area was a paradise for hunters and poachers as is evident by the many hunting trophies that are on show in the Mbega Camp. Specially equipped four wheel drive vehicles are used for travelling across the savannah. Almost all of the Selous Game Reserve's camps offer various tours. However, despite its size and beautiful landscape, compared to many other African nature parks Selous is little known on the tourist trail. For those on safari the river provides many opportunities to observe all kinds of animals as all of the reservation's wildlife depend on water for survival and sometimes the river banks are like a veritable Noah's Ark. Around forty thousand hippopotamuses populate the waters of the Selous Game Reserve that is also a habitat for much bird life. More than four hundred varieties have been counted including some rare species that are almost close to extinction. The Selous Game Reserve is rightly referred to as "a nature reserve of the superlative." It is a world full of natural beauty whose spectacular originality has managed to survive right up to the present day.

NPM-DVD-145 - Even for the African continent that is blessed with numerous beautiful natural landscapes, the Okavango Delta is truly unique. Covering a total area of more than fifteen thousand square kilometres the Okawango River is the largest inland delta in the world. It flows from the Bihé Highlands in Angola and travels down to the less elevated regions of the Kalahari Desert until it finally divides into a variety of creeks. The delta's relatively few visitors mean that the landscape is well protected and it also means that those who do come here can enjoy the scenery undisturbed. Rann's Camp has a first class range of facilities but such service comes at a price and it costs several hundred dollars per person per night, but to calm the shock one can enjoy a relaxing bathe in the camp's cool swimming pool. Wildlife abounds on the innumerable islands of the Okavango Delta that, with their lush vegetation, are a true paradise for many kinds of herbivore. Today the islands of the delta are not frequented by poachers because the terrain is far too difficult and inaccessible for them. Thus in these parts, the elephant, the largest mammal in Africa, is in no danger of being shot for its ivory tusks. Most of the Delta's giraffes live on the seventy-five kilometre long and twenty-five kilometre wide, Chief's Island. In addition to its lush vegetation and diverse natural habitats, the lagoons, swamps and forests of the Delta make it one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. The Okavango Delta is one of the last great wildernesses in Africa and is something altogether special. The scenery is so beautiful that it often resembles a wonderful painting, than mere reality, a place in which myth and the captivating magic of Africa have survived right up to the present day.
