However, it was only under the rule of the Moors, when Granada became an independent Islamic kingdom, that the region began to flourish. Even today the splendour of the former Islamic monarchy is highlighted by the world famous and legendary Alhambra Palace. Due to a peace treaty with the Christians'military leaders, Mohammed The First had the impressive castle built. Over the years the Alhambra was extended and its architecture was embellished by its royal inhabitants until the town finally fell to the Catholic Kings.
