The 392 square kilometre park consists mainly of an extensive plain that was formerly Lake Amboseli. Today it is well known for its rich variety of animals, particularly elephants. The unmistakable acacias of the grass plains majestically dominate the scenery while, in contrast, the dehydrated remains of other trees appear as haunted and mysterious. Over 800 African elephants live within the park along with zebras, gnus, several varieties of antelope, hyenas, giraffe and over forty different birds of prey.
